Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Founders of the Chemical Industry: Men to Be Remembered The Editor of the Chemical Trade Journal, Mr. George E. Davis, asked me, in 1889, to write a few articles for his journal on some of the notable and truly remarkable men who founded the Alkali Trade in Lancashire. The desire has been expressed that I would republish these articles in a more permanent form. After careful consideration, I have thought it expedient to make no alterations in the original articles, but to republish them just as they appeared, being mainly biographical sketches of men who have passed away, and a story of the industry with which they were connected. Since 1890 the alkali trade has been transformed, by the absorption of nearly all the leading private concerns into the great trust or combine, the United Alkali Company. Book Synopsis Chemistry, Society and Environment by : Colin Archibald Russell
Download or read book Chemistry, Society and Environment written by Colin Archibald Russell and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2000 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been several attempts to write the history of Britain's chemical industry as a whole, and countless others concentrating on individual companies. Some have looked at the technical aspects of the industry, whilst others have addressed economic issues. Few have, however, attempted to analyse the effects of the chemical industry on society in general. The current environmental crisis can only be fully understood in the light of its history. This is the first such book to look critically at the whole development of industrial chemistry in the UK in the context of its effects on the environment. No one from industry, government or academia can afford to be unaware of the historical roots of our present dilemma. Industrial chemists can take heart from the realization that their predecessors were remarkably aware of the problems and often found satisfactory solutions. Industrial chemistry has traditionally been seen as the great 'polluter'. Without any attempts at 'whitewash' this book puts the record straight. From academic chemist to industrialist to politician, Chemistry, Society and Environment: A New History of the British Chemical Industry will be of relevance to all those concerned with the social and environmental impact of the chemical industry.

Book Synopsis The Chemical Industry in Europe, 1850–1914 by : Ernst Homburg
Download or read book The Chemical Industry in Europe, 1850–1914 written by Ernst Homburg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe is the cradle of the modem international chemical industry. From the middle of the nineteenth century until the outbreak of World War I, the European chemical industry influenced not only the production and control of science and technology, but also made significant contributions towards economic development, as well as bringing about profound changes in working and living enviromnents. It is a highly complex heritage, both rich and threatening, that calls for close scrutinity. Fortunately, a unique opportunity to explore the historical development of the European chemical industry from a variety of novel standpoints, was made possible during 1993 as part of the European Science Foundation (ESF) programme called 'The Evolution of Chemistry in Europe, 1789-1939.' This process of exploration has taken place through three workshops, each dealing with different time periods. The workshop concerned with the period 1850-1914, which corresponds roughly to the so-called Second Industrial Revolution, was held in Maastricht, The Netherlands, on 23-25 March 1995. This volume is the outcome of that workshop. The other workshops dealing with European chemical industry were held in Liege in 1994, covering the First Industrial Revolution period, 1789-1850, and Strasbourg in 1996, covering the period between the two World Wars.

Download or read book Entrepreneurial Ventures in Chemistry written by Peter Reed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Muspratt family form a fascinating dynasty in the history of British commerce and manufacturing. Associated principally with the development of the chemical industry in Liverpool - James Muspratt (1793-1884) was the first person to make alkali on a large scale using the Leblanc Process - the three generations of the family also contributed to wider Victorian and Edwardian culture through their interests in politics, education (founding the Liverpool College of Chemistry in 1848), art, literature and theatre. This is the first study to present the history of the Muspratts as a family group and to consider the entrepreneurial spirit they brought to chemical manufacture in Britain and to their many other ventures.
Book Synopsis Shaping the Industrial Century by : Alfred D. Chandler Jr.
Download or read book Shaping the Industrial Century written by Alfred D. Chandler Jr. and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dean of business historians continues his masterful chronicle of the transforming revolutions of the twentieth century begun in Inventing the Electronic Century. Alfred Chandler argues that only with consistent attention to research and development and an emphasis on long-term corporate strategies could firms remain successful over time. He details these processes for nearly every major chemical and pharmaceutical firm, demonstrating why some companies forged ahead while others failed. By the end of World War II, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries were transformed by the commercializing of new learning, the petrochemical and the antibiotic revolutions. But by the 1970s, chemical science was no longer providing the new learning necessary to commercialize more products, although new directions flourished in the pharmaceutical industries. In the 1980s, major drug companies, including Eli Lilly, Merck, and Schering Plough, commercialized the first biotechnology products, and as the twenty-first century began, the infrastructure of this biotechnology revolution was comparable to that of the second industrial revolution just before World War I and the information revolution of the 1960s. Shaping the Industrial Century is a major contribution to our understanding of the most dynamic industries of the modern era.
