Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops combinatorial tools which are useful for reliability analysis, as demonstrated with a probabilistic network model. Basic results in combinatorial enumeration are reviewed, along with classical theorems on connectivity and cutsets. More developed analysis involves extremal set theory, matroid theory, and polyhedral combinatorics, among other themes. The presentation includes proofs or their outlines for most of the main theorems, with the aim of highlighting combinatorial ideas. Details of relevant work are presented wherever feasible. The work is intended for advanced mathematics students and computer science specialists.

The demand for reliable functioning of these systems has become more and more important. Thus, there is a need for highly reliable technical devices and systems, for monitoring and controlling their functioning and for planning maintenance and corrective actions to fulfill given requirements considering eco nomic limitations. These tasks reflect the wide field of engineering activities that are accompa nied by and based on a wide range of stochastical models. The book presents the main contributions to a workshop on Stochastic Models of Reliability, Qual ity, and Safety held in Schierke near Magdeburg, Germany. This workshop was part of a series of meetings that take place every two years organized by the Society of Reliability, Quality and Safety. The basic idea of these workshops is to bring together theorists, applied statisticians, and practitioners to exchange experiences and ideas of common interest. The book contains recent results in reliability and related fields. The presentation aims at making at least a part of the results accessible to engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic problem for the interconnection of communications media is to design interconnection networks for specific needs. For example, to minimize delay and to maximize reliability, networks are required that have minimum diameter and maximum connectivity under certain conditions. The book provides a recent solution to this problem. The subject of all five chapters is the interconnection problem. The first two chapters deal with Cayley digraphs which are candidates for networks of maximum connectivity with given degree and number of nodes. Chapter 3 addresses Bruijn digraphs, Kautz digraphs, and their generalizations, which are candidates for networks of minimum diameter and maximum connectivity with given degree and number of nodes. Chapter 4 studies double loop networks, and Chapter 5 considers broadcasting and the Gossiping problem. All the chapters emphasize the combinatorial aspects of network theory. Audience: A vital reference for graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics and theoretical computer science.

Book excerpt: In 24 papers from a 1997 workshop near Magdeburg, Germany, theoreticians, applied statisticians, and practitioners discuss their current work and compare and evaluate models and methods. Within sections on lifetime analysis, reliability analysis, network analysis, and process control, they consider such topics as acceptance regions and their application in lifetime estimation, stochastic models for the return of used devices, a unified approach to the reliability of recurrent structures, and controlling a process with three different states. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is important to be able to assess the reliability of a complex system in terms of the reliabilities of its components. This type of problem arises with increasing frequency in the analysis of telecommunication and distribution systems, which can be represented as networks. The present research employs an underlying algebraic structure to study network reliability problems and to develop new algorithms for their solution. Iterative techniques for calculating reliability (both exactly and approximately) have been developed for both general networks and a difficult class of specialized networks. These techniques allow the solution of fairly complex networks, ones that have previously resisted analysis. In addition, the underlying structure of network reliability problems has been approached by studying the combinatorial properties of a certain polynomial defined with respect to the underlying graph topology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elements of Combinatorial Computing focuses on the processes, principles, methodologies, and approaches involved in combinatorial computing. The publication first takes a look at a language for combinatorial computing, language implementation and program efficiency, and computer representation of mathematical objects. Discussions focus on geometric configurations, elementary combinatorial configurations, sets and vectors, natural numbers, program optimization, data representation, set manipulation, notation for iteration and recursion, and nested iteration and recursive programming. The text then takes a look at backtrack programming, generation of elementary configurations, and additional basic techniques and manipulations. Topics include isomorph rejection, transformations, finite set covering, sorting techniques, permutations with repeated objects, compositions, partitions, subsets and combinations, and basic backtracking and impasse detection. The book examines additional basic techniques and manipulations and applications of advanced algorithms. The publication is highly recommended for computer science experts and researchers interested in the elements in combinatorial computing.

This large, distributed, and everchanging network poses a challenge to researchers: How does one study, model, or und- stand such a decentralized, constantly evolving entity? Research in large-scale networks seeks to address this question, and the unique nature of these networks calls for a range of techniques from a host of disciplines. The workshop Com- natorial and Algorithmic Aspects of Networking and the Internet (CAAN 2004) provided a forum for the exchange of ideas on these topics. The primary goals of the workshop were to bring together a diverse cro- section of researchers in an already scattered and distinct community and also to provide a snapshot of the cutting-edge research in this?eld. We succeeded in these goals: among the participants were mathematicians, computer scientists in theory and algorithms, computer scientists in networks, physicists, and en- neers, as well as researchers from Europe and North America, participants from industry and academia, students, and established researchers; and among the papers were some new and surprising results as well as some introductions to the foundations of the?eld. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the probabilistic description of the behavior of a network in the process of random removal of its components (links, nodes) appearing as a result of technical failures, natural disasters or intentional attacks. It is focused on a practical approach to network reliability and resilience evaluation, based on applications of Monte Carlo methodology to numerical approximation of network combinatorial invariants, including so-called multidimensional destruction spectra. This allows to develop a probabilistic follow-up analysis of the network in the process of its gradual destruction, to identify most important network components and to develop efficient heuristic algorithms for network optimal design. Our methodology works with satisfactory accuracy and efficiency for most applications of reliability theory to real –life problems in networks.

Book excerpt: Network Reliability: Experiments with a Symbolic Algebra Environment examines two intertwined topics: computational methods for computing bounds on three measures of network reliability, and a symbolic algebra system to support these computations. It describes, in algorithmic outlines, efficient techniques for reliability bounds and discusses the implementation of the techniques. It explores all-terminal reliability, two-terminal reliability, and reliability of interconnection networks. Consistent with real-world experience, the computational environment and results are strongly supported by sound theoretical development.
