Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One might well ask why another volume dealing with biological aspects of compounds of fluorine should be offered to the scientific community, already burdened with a literature too massive to be comfortably ingested. Prior toW orld War II this question simply did not arise: there was not sufficient interest or literature in the field to warrant anything beyond the classical monograph pub 1 lished by KAJ RoHOLM in 1937 • RoHOLM's work was directed chiefly toward a better understanding of the effects of fluorides on the general health of workers in the cyrolite industry. However, with the demonstration that water-borne fluoride was a causative agent of both mottled enamel and increased resistance to dental caries, the ground work was laid in the 1930's and early 1940's for a greatly increased interest in the biological effects of fluorides in human beings. During this time and earlier for that matter, work also had been going steadily ahead in the less spectacular area of effects produced in poultry and livestock when fluorine-containing rock phosphate was incorporated in the ration, and when pasture land was contami nated with fluorides released during the large-scale conversion of rock phosphate to fertilizer and phosphoric acid. These latter aspects of the problem had led to the development of a respectable literature in plant physiology, dealing with the effects of fluoride on vegetation.

Book excerpt: Best Synthetic Methods: Organophosphorus (V) Chemistry provides systematic coverage of the most common classes of pentavalent organophosphorus compounds and reagents (including phosphonyl, phosphoryl, and organophosphates), and allows researchers an easy point of entry into this complex and economically important field. The book follows the Best Synthetic Methods format, containing practical methods, synthetic tips, and shortcuts. Where relevant, articles include toxicity data and historical context for the reactions. Typical analytical and spectroscopic data are also presented to enable scientists to identify key compound characteristics. The book is a valuable companion to research chemists in both academia and industry, summarizing the best practical methods (often originating in difficult-to-access, foreign-language primary literature) in one place. It is ideally suited for those working on industrial applications of these compounds, including insecticides, herbicides, flame retardants, and plasticizers. - Includes a mixture of tried and tested, historical methods that are proven to work, alongside new methods to provide scientists with a quick, time-saving resource of reliable methods - Includes tips and tricks to get reactions to work; important information often missing from other sources - Includes key analytical data for compounds, so scientists have one handy resource to select, perform, and analyze the best reaction

Book excerpt: In order to get a general concept of organophosphorus pesticides with such a variety in structure and biological activities, consideration of each aspect of chemistry, biochemistry, and the applied sciences is necessary. This book consists of these three main parts. After the presentation of the background of phosphorus chemistry in Chapter 1, stress was put on the chemical and biochemical reactions of organophosphorus pesticides, including synthesis, analysis, metabolism mode of action, and other interesting aspects in Chapter 2 to 4, and on the structure-pesticidal activity relationship in Chapter 5.

Book excerpt: The incredible "glowing" history of the "Devil's element "phosphorus Discovered by alchemists, prescribed by apothecaries, exploited by ninth-century industrialists, and abused by twentieth-century combatants, the chemical element phosphorus has fascinated us for more than three centuries. It may even be the cause of will-o'-the wisps and spontaneous human combustion! Now John Emsley has written an enthralling account of this eerily luminescent element. Shining with wonderful nuggets-from murders-by-phosphorus to a match factory strike; from the firebombing of Hamburg to the deadly compounds derived from phosphorus today-The 13th Element weaves together a rich tableau of brilliant and oddball characters, social upheavals, and bizarre events.

The first section considers selected aspects of molecular mechanisms, including selectivity of toxic agents and repair processes in the nervous system, toxicity of oxygen, fibers and aflatoxins. The second section discusses the interactions of carcinogens with DNA, and other targets, and their relevance to both molecular dosimetry of exposure and development of cancer. The final part is concerned with cellular and genetic aspects and includes coverage of some of the most recent and rapidly developing problems in toxicology.

Book excerpt: The objective of this ASI was to bring together specialists in several complex variables (many of whom have contributed to complex potential theory) and specialists in potential theory (all of whom have contributed to several complex variables) together with young researchers and graduate students for an interchange of ideas and techniques. Not only was the status of current research presented, but also the relevant background, much of which is not yet available in books. The following topics and interconnections among them were discussed: 1. Real and Complex Potential Theory. Capacity and approximation, basic prop erties of plurisubharmonic functions and methods to manipulate their singularities and study their growth, Green functions, Chebyshev-type quadratures, electrostatic fields and potentials, propagation of smallness. 2. Complex Dynamics. Review of complex dynamics in one variable, Julia sets, Fatou sets, background in several variables, Henon maps, ergodicity, use of potential theory and multifunctions. 3. Banach Algebras and Infinite Dimensional Holomorphy. Analytic multi functions, spectral theory, analytic functions on a Banach space, semigroups of holomor phic isometries, Pick interpolation on uniform algebras and Von Neumann inequalities for operators on a Hilbert space. The basic notion of complex potential theory is that of a plurisubharmonic function.

A collection of information on everything from aerosols to zones of peace, these two volumes cover historical background, technology, and strategic implications of biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons, thus providing facts, terms, and context needed to participate in contemporary policy debate. This encyclopedia is the only comprehensive reference dedicated to the three types of weapons of mass destruction. With over 500 entries arranged alphabetically, volume one covers biological and chemical weapons, while volume two focuses on nuclear weapons. Experts from eight countries cover issues related to these weapons, policies, strategies, technologies, delivery vehicles, arms control concepts, treaties, and key historical figures and locations. Entries are written to make difficult concepts easy to understand by cutting through military and scientific jargon. Students, lay readers, scientists, and government policy makers are provided with the broad range of information needed to place today's policy discussions in proper strategic or historical context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toxic Phosphorus Esters: Chemistry, Metabolism, and Biological Effects aims to become a source book on organophosphate research and show how the understanding of the events following organophosphate poisoning of animals can be understood in terms of events at the molecular level. The manuscript first offers information on nonenzymic reactions and the reaction with cholinesterase in vitro. Discussions focus on hydrolysis, isomerization, oxidation, phosphorylation of the enzyme, and selectivity for different cholinesterases. The text then examines enzymic degradation and activation in vitro, effects in mammals, and effects on isolated whole tissues. The publication ponders on the effects in insects and plants, including results of poisoning, metabolism, resistance, antagonism and synergism, and phytotoxicity. The text also reviews selective toxicity, as well as excretion and storage, metabolism, design of new selective compounds, and nature of the target. The manuscript is a dependable reference for readers interested in the composition, reactions, and effects of toxic phosphorus esters.
