Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet is the translation from the manuscript of The Method of Sitting Meditation, written by His Holiness Venerable Chwasan, the Fourth Head Dharma Master of Won Buddhism. This translation is a contemporary and practical explanation of the method of sitting meditation. There are many books on the subject of meditation but this writing differs from others in the following ways:First, the explanation is very practical and it includes specific guides which can be used by all levels of practitioners. The writing is based on the lengthy meditation experience of His Holiness and his lifetime of teaching many students from diverse backgrounds.Second, while there are many approaches to concentration, the Danjeonju method - placing the awareness on the Danjeon, the largest energy reservoir located in the lower abdomen - is a very accessible way to stay focused. The Danjeonju method taught here is far more accessible than other techniques and will assist many practitioners who want to deepen their meditation.Third, in addition to providing an explanation of sitting meditation, this booklet deals with the concepts of mindfulness, chanting meditation, One Mind, and stages of meditation. Readers can learn how to maintain a focused state of mind in their daily lives. They can also check their own level of practice by using the suggested guidelines. The Danjeonju concentration technique has been widely practiced in Taoist and Zen traditions, though its detailed explanation is not easily available in the West.

Book excerpt: A Tricycle BookBuddhist meditation originated when the Buddha "sat alone, accompanied merely by his own deep honesty and awareness, and refused to move until the barriers to truth were shattered." Only by focusing his attention inward, being unmoved by the stimuli of the outside world, was he able to achieve enlightenment. In this simple guide to meditation, Diana St. Ruth gives an overview of this ancient practice, likening it to "waking up as if from a dream." She explains specific techniques, such as counting breaths and walking meditation, in addition to providing helpful illustrations of postures and sitting styles. Book Synopsis Mind in the Balance by : B. Alan Wallace
Download or read book Mind in the Balance written by B. Alan Wallace and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By establishing a dialogue in which the meditative practices of Buddhism and Christianity speak to the theories of modern philosophy and science, B. Alan Wallace reveals the theoretical similarities underlying these disparate disciplines and their unified approach to making sense of the objective world. Wallace begins by exploring the relationship between Christian and Buddhist meditative practices. He outlines a sequence of meditations the reader can undertake, showing that, though Buddhism and Christianity differ in their belief systems, their methods of cognitive inquiry provide similar insight into the nature and origins of consciousness. From this convergence Wallace then connects the approaches of contemporary cognitive science, quantum mechanics, and the philosophy of the mind. He links Buddhist and Christian views to the provocative philosophical theories of Hilary Putnam, Charles Taylor, and Bas van Fraassen, and he seamlessly incorporates the work of such physicists as Anton Zeilinger, John Wheeler, and Stephen Hawking. Combining a concrete analysis of conceptions of consciousness with a guide to cultivating mindfulness and profound contemplative practice, Wallace takes the scientific and intellectual mapping of the mind in exciting new directions.

Book Synopsis The Posture of Meditation by : Will Johnson
Download or read book The Posture of Meditation written by Will Johnson and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 25th anniversary edition of the classic, comprehensive guide on meditation posture and how to carry its benefits into everyday life—for practitioners of all skill levels When it comes to meditation practices, the body is as important as the mind—a fact that may come as a surprise to the many people who regard meditation as a strictly mental activity. But, as Will Johnson shows, the physical aspect of the practice is far too often underemphasized. The alert-yet-relaxed sitting posture that is the common denominator of so many meditative techniques is a wonderful aid for clearing the mind and opening the heart, but it also works to activate the natural healing energies of both body and mind. In this essential guidebook, Will Johnson shows how meditation, too often misunderstood as a mental practice, can be immeasurably enriched through an embodied approach. The Posture of Meditation features a range of simple practices based on the principles of alignment, relaxation, and resilience. This classic book—now with a new section detailing the transformative power of the path of somatic meditation—has helped thousands of people to begin their meditation practice, to refine it, and to experience depths they never thought possible.

Book Synopsis Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha by : Daniel Ingram
Download or read book Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha written by Daniel Ingram and published by Aeon Books. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very idea that the teachings can be mastered will arouse controversy within Buddhist circles. Even so, Ingram insists that enlightenment is an attainable goal, once our fanciful notions of it are stripped away, and we have learned to use meditation as a method for examining reality rather than an opportunity to wallow in self-absorbed mind-noise. Ingram sets out concisely the difference between concentration-based and insight (vipassana) meditation; he provides example practices; and most importantly he presents detailed maps of the states of mind we are likely to encounter, and the stages we must negotiate as we move through clearly-defined cycles of insight. Its easy to feel overawed, at first, by Ingram's assurance and ease in the higher levels of consciousness, but consistently he writes as a down-to-earth and compassionate guide, and to the practitioner willing to commit themselves this is a glittering gift of a book.In this new edition of the bestselling book, the author rearranges, revises and expands upon the original material, as well as adding new sections that bring further clarity to his ideas.
Book Synopsis A History of Mindfulness by : Bhikkhu Sujato
Download or read book A History of Mindfulness written by Bhikkhu Sujato and published by Bhikkhu Sujato. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta is the most influential scripture in Buddhist meditation. It is the foundation text for the modern schools of 'vipassanā' or 'insight' meditation. The well-known Pali discourse is, however, only one of many early Buddhist texts that deal with mindfulness. This is the first full-scale study to encompass all extant versions of the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta, taking into account the dynamic evolution of the Buddhist scriptures and the broader Indian meditative culture. A new vision emerges from this groundbreaking study: mindfulness is not a system of 'dry insight' but is the 'way to convergence' leading the mind to deep states of peace.

Book Synopsis The Scriptures of Won Buddhism by : Bongkil Chung
Download or read book The Scriptures of Won Buddhism written by Bongkil Chung and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-01-31 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Won Buddhism, one of the major religions of modern Korea, was established in 1916 by Pak Chung-bin (1891–1943), later known as Sot’aesan. In 1943 Sot’aesan published a collection of Buddhist writings, the Correct Canon of Buddhism (Pulgyo chongjon), which included the doctrine of his new order. Four years later, the second patriarch, Chongsan (1900–1962), had the order compile a new canon, which was published in 1962. This work, translated here as The Scriptures of Won Buddhism (Wonbulgyo kyojon), consists of the Canon (a redaction of the first part of the Pulgyo chongjon) and the analects and chronicle of the founder known as the Scripture of Sot’aesan. The present translation incorporates critical tenets from the 1943 Canon that were altered in the redaction process and offers persuasive arguments for their re-inclusion.
