Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shinto Cult: A Christian Study of the Ancient Religion of Japan Another and much larger work, comprising thirty books, and containing a record of much of the same mythology and history as the K o-ji - ki, is called the Nikon or Chronicles of J apan.1 It is a composite of various elements derived from numerous different sources, and while it reports in substance the myths and stories of the gods as they are found in the Ko-ji-ki, it makes no mention of that older work and omits some things which the older work records. It gives, however, a num ber and variety of reports of the myths and tra ditions, informing us how, in one ancient writing, it is so and so recorded; in another writing, it is somewhat difierently told. This feature enhances its value for purposes of comparison among the varying traditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shinto (the Way of the Gods) Prehistoric Shinto. - Ethnologists are agreed that the predominant element of the Japanese race came to Japan by way of Korea from that part of Asia which lies north of China, probably by a succession of immigrations which extended over many centuries. It is useless to speculate as to what rudiments of religious belief the ancestors of the Japanese race may have brought with them from their continental home. Sun-worship has long been a central feature of Tartar religions, as it is of Shinto; but such a coincidence proves nothing, as this cult is universal among nations in the barbaric stage of civilization. It is impossible to say whether or not an acquaintance with the old State religion of China - essentially a nature-worship had an influence on the prehistoric development of Shinto. The circumstance that the Sun was the chief deity of the latter and Heaven of the former is adverse to this supposi tion. Nor is there anything in Japan which corresponds with the Shangti of the ancient Chinese. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shinto, or the Mythology of the Japanese Like many other peoples, the Japanese believe that heaven was once very near the earth, but they have no account of how it became sepa rated from and raised above the world. Formerly it was connected with the earth by means of a floating bridge or a rock boat, or a pillar of earth, whereby the. Kami could pass from one place to the other at will. The nature of this connection is very vaguely expressed in the records. Satow conceives that the floating bridge of heaven was the wind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion in Japan: Shintoism Buddhism Christianity Foreign trade, save for some concessions, - accom panied by the severest restrictions, - permitted to the Dutch; no foreigners were allowed to enter, and no natives to leave, the empire; the mission aries were expelled, and Christianity was prohibited under pain of death. The Japanese, as has been said, suspected everybody and shut out the world. Previous to this crisis the English had retired; but when, in 167 3, our country sought to resume friendly relations, the connexion existing between the English and Portuguese courts proved an insuperable obstacle 1 Subsequent overtures made in 1849, were courteously but firmly rejected; though the period of Japan's isolation was, as later events proved, almost at an end. In 1853, the Government of the United States despatched a fleet across the Pacific, under the command of Com modore Perry, to insist upon the surrender of a policy which, it was urged, no one nation of the world had a right to adopt towards the rest. Whether the arguments with which this position was advanced would of themselves have prevailed, is impossible to say; but since it was evident that should words fail, sterner measures would be resorted to, Japan had no choice but to submit. Treaties were accordingly concluded, first with the United States, and subsequently with England. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Shinto - A Short History provides an introductory outline of the historical development of Shinto from the ancient period of Japanese history until the present day. Shinto does not offer a readily identifiable set of teachings, rituals or beliefs; individual shrines and kami deities have led their own lives, not within the confines of a narrowly defined Shinto, but rather as participants in a religious field that included Buddhist, Taoist, Confucian and folk elements. Thus, this book approaches Shinto as a series of historical 'religious systems' rather than attempting to identify a timeless 'Shinto essence'. This history focuses on three aspects of Shinto practice: the people involved in shrine worship, the institutional networks that ensured continuity, and teachings and rituals. By following the interplay between these aspects in different periods, a pattern of continuity and discontinuity is revealed that challenges received understandings of the history of Shinto. This book does not presuppose prior knowledge of Japanese religion, and is easily accessible for those new to the subject.
