Book excerpt: Annotation Nestled between the majestic Rockies to the west and the vast Canadian Prairie to the east, the wild Boreal forest to the north and the arid shortgrass plains to the south, Alberta's agricultural heartland holds a wealth of fascinating natural and human history unknown to visitors?and even to most Alberta residents. Historian Judy Larmour and naturalist Henry Saley bring this hidden history to life through fourteen guided road trips. Mile by mile you'll be introduced to plants and wildlife, geological formations and anomalies, museums, restaurants, picnic spots, and the nooks and niches of Central Alberta's unique and exciting history and culture. What's a draped moraine? Where can you find beaked hazelnuts? How was logging done in early Alberta? Who were the African-American immigrants who settled near Breton? What's so great about muskeg? These are some of the thousands of tidbits you'll be treated to if you Stop the Car!

This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This checklist of the Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) of Alberta lists 2367 species reported to occur in the province, as well as 138 species whose occurrence in Alberta is probable. Each species entry includes adult flight time and distribution status in the Cordilleran, Boreal, and Grasslands ecozones, as well as references to taxonomic works and to the literature and public collection sources of the records. Detailed notes on taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution, habitat, and biology are given for 1524 of the listed species. An additional section provides details on 171 species erroneously reported from Alberta in previous works. The authors hope it will be a useful resource for anyone carrying out species-level work on Lepidoptera in western Canada, or taxonomic work on Lepidoptera in general. An introductory section provides a general overview of the order Lepidoptera and the natural regions of Alberta, and the history and current state of knowledge of Alberta Lepidoptera. Each of the 63 families (and selected subfamilies) occurring in Alberta is briefly reviewed, with information on distinguishing features, general appearance, and general biology. The list is accompanied by an appendix of proposed nomenclature changes, consisting of revised status for 25 taxa raised from synonymy to species level, and new synonymy for 20 species-level and one genus-level taxa here considered to be subjective synonyms, with resultant revised synonymy for one taxon and formalization of seven new combinations.

This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammals in the genus Martes are mid-sized carnivores of great importance to forest ecosystems. This book, the successor to Martens, Sables, and Fishers: Biology and Conservation, provides a scientific basis for management and conservation efforts designed to maintain or enhance the populations and habitats of Martes species throughout the world. The twenty synthesis chapters contained in this book bring together the perspectives and expertise of 63 scientists from twelve countries, and are organized by the five key themes of evolution and biogeography, population biology and management, habitat ecology and management, research techniques, and conservation. Recent developments in research technologies such as modeling and genetics, biological knowledge about pathogens and parasites, and concerns about the potential effects of global warming on the distribution and status of Martes populations make new syntheses of these areas especially timely. The volume provides an overview of what is known while clarifying initiatives for future research and conservation priorities, and will be of interest to mammalogists, resource managers, applied ecologists, and conservation biologists.
