Book excerpt: An annotated bibliography on sex discrimination in higher education and the professions is presented. Sex discrimination remains a major workplace problem and is found in virtually all levels of employment. The bibliography consists of 124 citations which appeared from 1984-1988. It excludes court cases and the "popular press," and although not meaning to diminish that dimension, focuses instead on the professional literature in the field. Four sections offer resources on compensation/pension, hiring practices, promotion, and the work environment. An author index with citation numbers is provided. (SM)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated bibliography includes 179 citations of journal articles, books, organizational and research reports, papers, conference proceedings, and newspaper articles on sex discrimination in higher education and efforts to eliminate discrimination. Most of the materials have been published after 1970. An introduction to the bibliography provides an overview of the status of women professionals and students in academic institutions, and the changes in status that policy and litigation are helping to bring about. A statistical table presents information on the proportions of women students and faculty in selected American universities/colleges, and a second table provides summaries of court cases concerning discrimination against women professionals in academic institutions. Among the sex discrimination issues that the annotated bibliographic citations cover are tenure; institutional policy; Federal policy and legislation; court litigation; academic freedom; affirmative action; male and female differences in employment levels and salaries; marriage and careers; women scientists; sexual harassment; and the general labor market for women. Book excerpt: Recent studies show that, either consciously or unconsciously, teachers are not practicing gender equity in the classroom. Boys are called on more in class than girls and are encouraged to pursue careers from which girls are excluded because they are thought to be less capable. Serious questions arise for educators and counselors in this time of increasing awareness of the implications of gender bias, such as what comprises a gender-fair education and how can gender equity become part of the classroom curriculum? Guidance counselors and teachers share an important responsibility in seeking answers to these questions in order to avoid limiting students’ potential because of gender. To achieve this end, Beverly A. Stitt has compiled an annotated bibliography of hundreds of books, articles, videos, classroom activities, and curriculum and workshop guides to help provide the tools needed for educators to become more gender conscious and to develop a gender–fair educational system. The bibliography is divided into twenty-three categories under the headings of Agriculture and Industry, Business, Career Guidance, Communications, Computers, Discrimination, Displaced Homemakers/Reentry Women, Elementary Education, Family and Work Issues, Gender Role Stereotyping, History, Home Economics, In-service Training, Legislation, Male Focus, Math and Science, Nontraditional Careers, Pregnant and Parenting Teens, Recruitment, Special Needs, Teaching, Vocational Education, and Women’s Studies. Each entry’s annotation provides a short description of the content, the age group to which the resource applies, and ordering information. The book concludes with an index in which entries are cross-referenced under various categories to further aid the reader’s research.

Book excerpt: Sexual harassment is a pervasive social problem in the United States. In recent years, literature on sexual harassment has rapidly expanded, as increasing attention has been directed toward this legal and moral issue. This bibliography surveys the large amount of literature on sexual harassment published between 1984 and 1994. Included are entries for books, dissertations, and articles, with entries arranged in topical chapters. Entries for books and articles include descriptive annotations, and a chronology traces the recent history of sexual harassment in the United States. The problem of sexual harassment was with us long before the highly publicized 1991 confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. However, Anita Hill's testimony regarding sexual harassment captured the nation and sparked a public debate on what had been treated as a private issue. Because of its subjective nature, sexual harassment has been difficult to quantify and define. As a result of the pervasiveness and complexity of sexual harassment, there is now an enormous body of literature on the topic. This book is a guide to the available material. From the more than 1,000 citations found by the authors, the bibliography has been limited to some 534 books, articles, and dissertations. The works were chosen for their scholarly, original, or creative contribution to sexual harassment literature. Materials generally excluded were newspaper articles, popular press publications, anecdotal reports, and editorial comments or letters. Entries are arranged in topical chapters, and entries for books and articles include descriptive annotations. A chronology traces major developments in sexual harassment legislation in the United States from the 1964 Civil Rights Act to a 1993 U.S. Supreme Court case.
