Book excerpt: There is a lack of research demonstrating self-determination skills being taught at the elementary level. This pre-post design study examined the impact of implementing a self-determination curriculum unit to two groups of fourth graders, ages nine to eleven years old, who receive special education for various diagnoses, including specific learning disability, speech and language impairment, other health impairment, and autism. Eleven students learned about self-determination (i.e. self-awareness, self-advocacy, choice making, and goal setting) through 28 lessons which included the use of role playing, hands-on activities, and literature. All participants, students, their parents, and their teachers, completed the AIR Self-Determination Scale before and after the curriculum intervention. Researcher reflection notes, student responses to post-intervention motivation scales, responses to research supplemental questions on pre- and post-surveys from parents and teachers were additional data sources. The findings indicate that overall, there were examples of growth in students' self-determined behaviors. In particular, the capacity scores from the AIR measure showed an increase in perceptions of students' self-determination skills, based on parent and teacher surveys. In discussions during the unit lessons, all students were able to articulate their goals and recognize the meaning of key self-determination terms in various aspects of the curriculum. Recommendations for practice include implementing the curriculum unit with a larger number of students, including students in general education and those with more significant disabilities. Further research should be conducted to identify more long term effects of elementary-level self-determination curriculum for students with disabilities.

Partly influenced by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, this migration from rural reservations to metropolitan centers presented both challenges and opportunities. This history examines the educational programs American Indians developed in Chicago and gives particular attention to how the American Indian community chose its own distinct path within and outside of the larger American Indian self-determination movement. In what John J. Laukaitis terms community self-determination, American Indians in Chicago demonstrated considerable agency as they developed their own programs and worked within already existent institutions. The community-based initiatives included youth programs at the American Indian Center and St. Augustine's Center for American Indians, the Native American Committee's Adult Learning Center, Little Big Horn High School, O-Wai-Ya-Wa Elementary School, Native American Educational Services College, and the Institute for Native American Development at Truman College. Community Self-Determination presents the first major examination of these initiatives and programs and provides an understanding of how education functioned as a form of activism for Chicago's American Indian community.

Book excerpt: This investigation employed a qualitative single case embedded design to understand the teaching practices and self-determination experiences of students with high incidence disabilities in a Lighthouse elementary Leader in Me school. This study addressed the following research questions: 1) how do teachers in an elementary Lighthouse Leader in Me school both understand and support students' with high incidence disabilities need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness; 2) how does training in the 7 Habits principles impact self-determined behaviors among students with high incidence disabilities in an elementary Lighthouse Leader in Me school; and 3) how does the social contextual environment of an elementary Lighthouse Leader in Me school support the exercise and expression of self-determined behaviors for students with high incidence disabilities. Participants included four fifth-grade students with specific learning disabilities and Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder who received special education services inside the general education classroom for at least 80% of the school day. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, student leadership portfolio discussions, school tours, observations, and artifact examination. Data were analyzed using common comparative thematic analysis. Results suggest that a culture of high expectations accompanied by teacher supports created an inclusive learning environment conducive for self-determined behaviors among students with high incidence disabilities. Overall, students experienced positive self- iii determination outcomes with limited sustained impact. Recommendations for program considerations and further research are provided.
