I assume each $ ilde{t}$1 decays into a ? lepton and a b quark, with branching ratio ?, and search for final states containing either an electron or a muon from a leptonic ? decay, a hadronically decaying ? lepton, and two or more jets. Two candidate events pass my final selection criteria, consistent with the expectation from standard model processes. I present upper limits on the cross section times branching ratio squared ?($ ilde{t}$1$ ilde{t}$1) x ?2 as a function of the stop mass m($ ilde{t}$1). Assuming ? = 1, I set a 95% confidence level limit m($ ilde{t}$1) > 153 GeV=c2. These limits are also fully applicable to the case of a pair produced third generation scalar leptoquark that decays into a ? lepton and a b quark.

Book excerpt: A search for pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to top quark and $\tau$ lepton pairs is presented using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1. The search is performed using events that contain an electron or a muon, a hadronically decaying $\tau$ lepton, and two or more jets. The observations are found to be consistent with the standard model predictions. Assuming that all leptoquarks decay to a top quark and a $\tau$ lepton, the existence of pair produced, charge -1/3, third-generation leptoquarks up to a mass of 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level. This result constitutes the first direct limit for leptoquarks decaying into a top quark and a $\tau$ lepton, and may also be applied directly to the pair production of bottom squarks decaying predominantly via the R-parity violating coupling [lambda]' 333.

Book excerpt: A search is performed for third-generation scalar leptoquarks and heavy right-handed neutrinos in events containing one electron or muon, one hadronically decaying tau lepton, and at least two jets, using a $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV pp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.9 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016. The number of observed events is found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction. A limit is set at 95% confidence level on the product of the leptoquark pair production cross section and beta squared where beta is the branching fraction of leptoquark decay to a tau lepton and a bottom quark. Assuming beta=1, third-generation leptoquarks with masses below 850 GeV are excluded at 95 % confidence level. An additional search based on the same event topology involves heavy right-handed neutrinos, N[R], and right-handed W bosons, W[R], arising in a left-right symmetric extension of the standard model. In this search, W[R] bosons are assumed to decay to a tau lepton and N[R] followed by the decay of the N[R] to a tau lepton and an off-shell W[R] boson. Assuming the mass of the right-handed neutrino to be half of the mass of the right-handed W boson, W[R] boson masses below 2.9 TeV are excluded at 95 % confidence level. These results improve on the limits from previous searches for third-generation leptoquarks and heavy right-handed neutrinos with tau leptons in the final state.

The number of observed events is found to be in agreement with the expected standard model background. Third-generation scalar leptoquarks with masses below 740 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a 100% branching fraction for the leptoquark decay to a tau lepton and a bottom quark. In addition, this mass limit applies directly to top squarks decaying via an R-parity violating coupling [lambda]'333. The search also considers a similar signature from top squarks undergoing a chargino-mediated decay involving the R-parity violating coupling [lambda]'3jk. Each top squark decays to a tau lepton, a bottom quark, and two light quarks. Top squarks in this model with masses below 580 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. The constraint on the leptoquark mass is the most stringent to date, and this is the first search for top squarks decaying via [lambda]'3jk.

Current theory suggests that leptoquarks would come in three different generations. We report on a search for charge 1/3 third generation leptoquarks produced in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using data collected by the D0 detector at Fermilab. Such leptoquarks would decay into a tau-neutrino plus a b-quark with branching fraction B. We present preliminary results on an analysis where both leptoquarks decay into neutrinos giving a final state with missing energy and two b-jets. Using 425(recorded) pb{sup -1} of data, we place limits on {sigma}(p{bar p} {yields} LQ{ovr LQ})B{sup 2} as a function of the leptoquark mass. Assuming B = 1, we excluded at the 95% confidence level scalar third generation leptoquarks with M{sub LQ}

First-generation scalar leptoquarks with masses less than 1010 (850) GeV are excluded for [beta] = 1.0 (0.5), where b is the branching fraction of a leptoquark decaying to a charged lepton and a quark. Similarly, secondgeneration scalar leptoquarks with masses less than 1080 (760) GeV are excluded for [beta] = 1.0 (0.5). Furthermore, mass limits are also set for vector leptoquark production scenarios with anomalous vector couplings, and for R-parity violating supersymmetric scenarios of top squark pair production resulting in similar final-state signatures. These are the most stringent limits placed on the masses of leptoquarks and RPV top squarks to date.

Book excerpt: Searches have been made for first generation scalar and vector leptoquarks by the D0 collaboration and for second generation scalar leptoquarks by the CDF collaboration. The data sample is from the 1992-93 p[bar p] run at [radical]s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Assuming that leptoquarks are pair produced and decay into charged leptons and quarks with branching fraction [beta], mass limits at the 95% Confidence Level (CL) have been obtained. For first generation scalar leptoquarks the lower mass limit is 130 GeV/c[sup 2] for [beta] = 1.0 and 116 GeV/c[sup 2] for [beta] = 0.5. For first generation vector leptoquarks with [kappa], the anomalous coupling, of 1.0 and [beta] = 1.0, the lower mass limit is 240 GeV/c[sup 2] and for [kappa] = 1.0, [beta] = 0.5, the lower mass limit is 240 GeV/c[sup 2]. For [kappa] = 0 and [beta] = 1.0, the lower mass limits is 190 GeV/c[sup 2] and for [kappa] = 0, [beta] = 0.5, the lower mass limit is 185 GeV/c[sup 2]. For second generation scalar leptoquarks, the mass limits are 133 GeV/c[sup 2] for [beta] = 1.0 and 98 GeV/c[sup 2] for [beta] = 0.5. A search for squarks and gluinos, predicted by Supersymmetric models, was made by D0 in the three or more jets plus E[sub t] channel. The number of events observed was consistent with background. For heavy squarks, a lower gluino mass limit of 146 GeV/c[sup 2] was obtained, and for equal squark and gluino masses a mass limit of 205 GeV/c[sup 2] was obtained at the 95% CL.
