Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bell the Cat: Or, Who Destroyed the Scottish Abbeys? As it was not necessary for our purpose to introduce all the demolished, dilapidated, or preserved cathedrals and kirks, we had to make a selection. That selection may not be satis factory to many people. They may say that there are those in which might well have been left out, and others out which might well have been put in. That is so. But as a selection had to be made, and we could not h0pe to please everyone, we made a selection to please ourselves. And having done so, whatever other objections may be raised, we think we have at least gathered together as many instances or cases as should satisfy any one having an open mind that the Reformers were not the destroyers of the Abbeys and Cathedrals of Scotland. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Book excerpt: The period begun by the influence of Queen Margaret (1047-1093), continued by her sons and their successors on the Scottish throne, and culminating in the Scottish Reformation of 1560, is that with which this book deals. The old Celtic Church of Scotland was brought to an end by two causes-internal decay and external change. Under the first head, notice must be taken of the encroachment upon the ecclesiastic element by the secular, and of the gradual absorption of the former by the latter. There was a vitality in the old ecclesiastical organisation, but it was weakened by the assimilation of the native Church to that of Rome in the seventh and eighth centuries, which introduced a secular element among the clergy; and the frequent Danish invasions, which may be described as the organised power of Paganism against Scottish Christianity, grievously undermined its native force.

Book excerpt: Scottish Cathedrals And Abbeys This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

(2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Church of Scotland: A History of the Cathedrals, Conventual Foundations, Collegiate Churches, and Hospitals of Scotland It has long been a matter of extreme surprise to thoughtful minds that Scotland, to a proverb jealous of her nationality and proud of her ancient lineage, in which, as in many other matters affecting the past, her temper is eminently conservative, yet can be so indifferent to the sacred reliques of her national art, and neglect the precious heirlooms of this kind transmitted to the present time. The true reason is, that the popular mind has been sedulously educated to regard such remains as monuments of idolatry and superstition; and in fact they have ceased to occupy a prominent position in the ordinary descriptions of the country, which is represented to strangers as full of noble salmon streams, heathery moors, gorse-clad, robed in purple and gold, and rich in game; stern, silent mountains full of a grand, grave beauty, chains of broad steel-grey lakes, quiet glens, brawling burns, thunderous waterfalls, rugged coasts and island-studded seas; but except in the country immediately round Edinburgh destitute of those "memorials of fame which renown" other countries, sheltered and studied with the deepest interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of Great Britain: Their History and Architecture In this volume I have attempted to give an architectural description of all the cathedral churches of England, Wales, and Scotland, together with a brief history of each see. In order to include any adequate account of each church and bishopric in one volume of portable size, which may be of use to visitors in their travels, much compression has been necessary, but it is hoped that nothing of importance has been omitted which might be useful to those who would read aright the architectural history of our great churches. On account of their immense importance in the history of Gothic art, it has been thought well to include in this volume some account of the churches of Westminster and Beverley. At the close of each history of a cathedral will be found a record of the principal building dates and dimensions, and also a brief account of the chief places and churches of interest in the city or neighbourhood which it is advisable to visit. I desire to express my grateful thanks to all who have kindly assisted in the preparation of this work, to the deans and canons-in-residence who have often guided me by their counsel during my study of their cathedrals, and also to the vergers who have readily afforded me much valuable help. More especially do I wish to thank the Deans of Lincoln, Ely, Chester and Gloucester, Canon Tristram of Durham, Bishop Anson of Lichfield, and Archdeacon Richardson of Southwell, for their courtesy and kindly interest. I have also to record my obligations to the work of many previous writers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathedrals, Abbeys, and Churches of England and Wales: Descriptive, Historical, Pictorial In St. George's Chapel blended lie the oppressor and the oppressed, for in the southern aisle a black slab covers the remains of Henry VI. Removed hither from Chertsey. Pilgrims for a time came to this, as to a shrine, and found a cure for the headache in putting on an old red hat which the king had worn. Near to his grave another slab covers the remains of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. The tall apsidal chantry at the east part of the aisle bears the name of the Earl of Lincoln, Lord High Admiral to Queen Elizabeth; and near his grave lies Richard Beauchamp, Bishop of Salisbury, under whose care the chapel was built. At the western end of the aisle a richly-adorned monument has been erected by the Queen to the memory of the late Duchess of Gloucester, and other members of that branch of the Royal Family. Opposite to this is a little chantry which projects into the Lower Ward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
