Download or read book Homeless written by Gerald Daly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The causes of homelessness are disputed by both Right and Left. But, few would argue that life on the streets is anything other than dangerous and debilitating. Unemployment, deinstitutionalisation, abuse in the home are among the stories the homeless tell. Voluntary organisations point to the failure of emergency shelters and food banks, the cut-backs in social programmes and the severe shortage of affordable housing. On the international scale, the changing global system has placed new demands on the economies of Europe and north America which have impacted on resources, employment and even political will. This book is the first comprehensive international study of homelessness. The author argues that the category of the homeless must itself be broadened, to encompass those chronically without shelter to those in immediate risk of dispossession, if homelessness is to be tackled effectively (before and after it happens) by public policy, voluntary organisations and the individuals themselves.
Book Synopsis French Phrases Vol.2 by : Nik Marcel
Download or read book French Phrases Vol.2 written by Nik Marcel and published by 2Language Books. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 1013 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Phrases Vol.2: English & French THIS EDITION: French Phrases seeks to bridge the gap between knowing individual words and knowing how to create or understand sentences. Sentences are phrases or a combination of phrases, and phrases are a combination of words. The simplest phrases are the simplest ways of combining words. Exposure to a wide variety of phrases, especially in increasing complexity, provides the basis for obtaining a solid grasp of a new language. The reason being, phrases can be combined with other phrases to create endless possibilities in language. French Phrases contains a wide variety of phrases, but it also demonstrates how phrases can increase in complexity – through the inclusion of individual words or other phrases. The reader can choose between four formats: Section 1: English to French Section 2: French to English Section 3: English Section 4: French The text can be used to obtain a fundamental grasp of French grammar. An understanding of the rules that underpin the way words combine into phrases, or phrases combine into sentences, allows the language learner to expand their capacity exponentially simply by increasing vocabulary. With this in mind, the text includes an introductory section summarising the important aspects of French grammar. The dual-language text has been arranged for quick and easy cross-referencing. The text can be used on its own. However, the content is ideal for reinforcing and expanding on a basic grasp of the language. With an increasingly robust grasp of the language, the language learner can easily and fruitfully move on to more advanced bilingual text — like in 2Language Books editions —, or suitable French only text: a simple novel, a French news website, etc. Many basic language books offer some form of audio support. Internet services — primarily news based radio stations — offer podcasts. Audio from television is an additional resource, and can be formatted for use on various digital platforms. However, if audio is an important component of your interest in languages, electronic devices that support quality text-to-speech (TTS) will likely be appealing. With a library card, TTS technology (in a device that supports the relevant content), and the above mentioned resources (as digital content), an entire language learning system is available for not much more than a cup of coffee! There is no substantial financial outlay to get you started. Furthermore, there are no additional ongoing fees (and updates), and there are no expiry dates on ‘premium’ content and resources. Book Synopsis God of No Fixed Address by : Jean-Claude Verrecchia
Download or read book God of No Fixed Address written by Jean-Claude Verrecchia and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where does God live? This is not an idle question. Does God dwell there near us or away from us? Does he live in one place or is he willing to relocate? Is it possible to visit his house--and in this case what are the entrance requirements? Does he live in a closed place, totally, forbidden for any human visit? Answering these questions is the subject of God of No Fixed Address. The tone used is very accessible, and sometimes even disturbing. Misconceptions about the Jewish sanctuary, the Jerusalem temple, and the sacrificial system of the Old Testament will be flattened down and swept when necessary. They will triumph the amazing divine will, which takes man off balance, which refuses any confinement, which tears the sails and demolishes the stones to pitch his tent in every heart and in every community of faith. God of No Fixed Address is a journey for those who love discovering new territories.
Book Synopsis Using Space: Critical Geographies of Drugs and Alcohol by : Christopher M. Moreno
Download or read book Using Space: Critical Geographies of Drugs and Alcohol written by Christopher M. Moreno and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consumption of drugs and alcohol, and the pleasures and problems arising from this consumption, can be understood as embedded and constitutive elements of social, family, and recreational life. At the same time, they are key sites of intervention for a broad array of state and non-state actors focused on regulation, treatment, and recovery. This edited volume showcases current research on the complex social and cultural geographies of drugs and alcohol. Taking an avowedly critical approach, the authors draw from a variety of theoretical traditions to explore the socially and spatially embedded nature of alcohol and drug consumption, regulation and treatment, and the ways in which these give rise to particular lived experiences, while foreclosing on others. Together, the chapters question taken-for-granted assumptions about the nature of, and motivations for, drug and alcohol use, and pay direct attention to both the intended and unintended consequences of regulation and treatment initiatives. Despite and, in part, because of this critical stance, chapters hold immediate implications for drug and alcohol policy and public health interventions. This book was originally published as a special issue of Social and Cultural Geography.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Dictionary of Cultural References in Modern French by : Michael Mould

This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its second edition, The Routledge Dictionary of Cultural References in Modern French reveals the hidden cultural dimension of contemporary French, as used in the press, going beyond the limited and purely lexical approach of traditional bilingual dictionaries. Even foreign learners of French who possess a good level of French often have difficulty in fully understanding French articles, not because of any linguistic shortcomings on their part but because of their inadequate knowledge of the cultural references. This cultural dictionary of French provides the reader with clear and concise explanations of the crucial cultural dimension behind the most frequently used words and phrases found in the contemporary French press. This vital background information, gathered here in this innovative and entertaining dictionary, will allow readers to go beyond a superficial understanding of the French press and the French language in general to see the hidden yet implied cultural significance that is so transparent to the native speaker. This fully revised second edition includes: a broad range of cultural references from the historical and literary to the popular and classical; an enhanced analysis of punning mechanisms used in the press; over 3,000 cultural references explained with updated examples; a three-level indicator of frequency; new and expanded chapters on the French of Quebec, institutional and academic references, and English borrowings in the areas of IT and medical science; over 600 online questions to test knowledge before and after reading. Download or read book Gypsy World written by Patrick Williams and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2003-06-15 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many of us, one of the most important ways of coping with the death of a close relative is talking about them, telling all who will listen what they meant to us. Yet the Gypsies of central France, the Manuš, not only do not speak of their dead, they burn or discard the deceased's belongings, refrain from eating the dead person's favorite foods, and avoid camping in the place where they died. In Gypsy World, Patrick Williams argues that these customs are at the center of how Manuš see the world and their place in it. The Manuš inhabit a world created by the "Gadzos" (non-Gypsies), who frequently limit or even prohibit Manuš movements within it. To claim this world for themselves, the Manuš employ a principle of cosmological subtraction: just as the dead seem to be absent from Manuš society, argues Williams, so too do the Manuš absent themselves from Gadzo society—and in so doing they assert and preserve their own separate culture and identity. Anyone interested in Gypsies, death rituals, or the formation of culture will enjoy this fascinating and sensitive ethnography.

Book Synopsis Haitian laughter by : Georges Anglade
Download or read book Haitian laughter written by Georges Anglade and published by Educa Vision Inc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Mosaic of Ninety Miniatures in French and English, translated from the French by Anne Pease McConnell. Haitian Laughter is constructed around the lodyans, a narrative genre that has blossomed in Haiti as an art of miniatures. The substantial reduction in scale that presides over their creation allows only the significant features to remain, like a medieval illumination, a Japanese bonsai, or simply a small sized map of an immense territory. This makes each miniature a "dwarf sized saga," which lets us glimpse the larger dimension of the original of which it is a reduced model. Bilingual, French and English.
