Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sail Tales is about the adventures a humble sailboat owner had over the years. So where does one start writing about these adventures? You start at the beginning. That beginning was in 1967 when I was helping a friend of mine, Frank, re-build an old wooden boat that he had bought. Frank took the whole boat apart and then rebuilt it from the frames up. It was a sleek little craft and I found myself involved in his project. Frank found a similar craft and with his promise of help, I bought it. I spent the whole winter and most of the spring doing the things that had to be done to the boat to get it ready for the summer of 69. I knew nothing about about sailing. But how hard could it be to learn? I soon found out. My sailing adventures started that summer. I learned quickly that unlike a power boat, a sailboat is not a craft that you get aboard, turn a key and then drive it like a car. You have to sail the boat. You have to do what the wind lets you do. You cant go directly where you want to go because the wind wont allow it. You have to finesse, you have be diplomatic, you have to learn to tweak a sail rather than over trim. Well, I learned to get that sailboat from point to point. I also learned that time on a sailboat is not the same as time on land and I learned this on my very first trip on my first sailboat. That three hour trip ended up taking thirteen hours. Read about it. The time of a sailboat trip can not be predicted. If you need to get to a certain place at a certain time take a bus not a sailboat. An afternoon trip has more than once become a late nighter. Leave your watches ashore. Thats what I tell everyone before they step foot aboard. I dont know what time well be back but Im certain that we will be back. My very first sailboat trip was not a late nighter but rather an early morning return. Speaking of time, How long does it take you to hang a calender on your wall? You get a stick pin and put it through a hole in the calender and stick the pin in the cork board. Thirty seconds? It took me the better part of three hours to hang a calender on the boat. First I had to get the tape from the old calender off the wall. For this project I had to find the razor blade scrapper. Then I had to run to the hardware store to get new blades for it. The scrapper got the top layer of the tape off the wall but the sticky part of the tape just rolled up into little balls. I had to go back to the hardware store for some solvent to get the sticky balls off the wall. Then and only then was I able to re-tape the new calender to the wall. I have since put the scrapper in its place so I can find it next time. I hope I remember that place. Imagine what a project it is to install a new pedestal steering system or an new diesel engine. Imagine the time it takes to make an old boat a safe craft, a boat ready to sail, and the keyword is safe. It took me the better part of four years to make my Morgan 38 the boat I wanted it to be. And notice Im not saying anything about the cost. Thats another story. And these are some of the stories I tell. This is the third boat I have redone. But it is the last boat that I will redo. Im getting too old for this rebuilding stuff. Parts of Sail Tales tells about projects such as what I have just described. But the majority of the stories are about sailing trips where something happens. If you are a sailor or if you own a sailboat, sit back and try to remember trips that were dull and boring. They dont pop into your mind. But what does pop are the adventures, the thrill of the wind that is blowing just a bit harder than you would like. You remember the trips where the rail is in the water for most of the day and how you were able to keep the boat under control. You remember the trips where there was no wind and the day became a motor day. You remember entering an anchorage and finding someone there from your marina or someo

For three experienced sailors who dreamed of sailing through the idyllic South Pacific, it was a perfect time to embark on a quest through some of the most amazing cruising destinations in the world. As New Zealander Hollywood Bob Rossiter, Australian Peter Jinks, and Canadian Alan Boreham set off from different points in the world one in the company of a Hollywood star, one racing aboard a classic wooden yacht, and one on his first high seas adventure none of them has any idea that a series of unanticipated events will eventually bring them together in the tropical swelter of Pago Pago. Along their journey lined with unexpected moments, the sailors meet a wide array of eclectic characters, including Sharkbite Charlie; Rosie, the three-hundred-pound dancer; and Gunter, the mysterious German chef from South America. Beer in the Bilges offers a fascinating glimpse into sailing voyages to the other side of the world where three men join forces and have to rely on their skills, their wit, and, most importantly, on each other as they embark on an unforgettable nautical adventure.

" This is the story of a man who overcame alcoholism and turned himself into a sailor, both as a substitute to addiction and as a means to adventure. The story is told beginning with the vision and desire to sail on the ocean, through the training and education, buying a boat, gaining experience, and finally embarking on a 1000-nautical-mile journey home, singlehanded. An immersive nonfiction adventure story, "Becoming a Sailor" captures the scene as one would experience it. Readers will feel that they are sailing in the ocean on a dark and windy night, beating into a northwest wind and heavy seas while rounding Cape Canaveral. They will feel the cold water hit them in the face when waves crash into the little sailboat. They will experience the joy of a perfect day, sailing at hull-speed under bright sunshine across the open water halfway between Cuba and Florida. They will dive in the clear waters of The Bahamas and see the ancient and cavernous coral around which swim schools of blue tang, majestic queen angelfish, and the upside-down royal gramma. The reader will surf big waves in Puerto Rico, freedive into underwater caves in Florida, visit the remote Venezuelan outpost of Isla Aves, explore a huge and abandoned 1800's fort in the Florida Straits. Alligators will be encountered deep in the Okefenokee swamp. Manta rays, dolphin, sharks, Goliath grouper, and many colorful reef fish move in and out of the story."Becoming a Sailor" also goes into technical detail about the repairs and additions to Sobrius, a 1972 Dufour Arpege, as well as the techniques the author had to learn in order to sail singlehanded on multi-day passages. The narrative moves back and forth in time, from the author's adventures leading up to the purchase of Sobrius to the final journey, singlehanded, from Tampa Bay to The Dry Tortugas, then Miami, and finally to St Augustine. When the author departed on this passage, he had little experience, but had done much preparation and study. Still he was not certain about many things, including his ability, the ability of the vessel, and whether or not he could sleep in 20 minute increments for three or four days at a time. All the unknowns of a first singlehanded voyage lead to a fascinating experience which is shared with vivid description of both scene and mind in this gripping tale of adventure at sea.

Book excerpt: Ever thought of ditching your conventional life to buy a sailboat and go traveling the world as a modern-day sea nomad? Half Fast is the true story of a married couple in their thirties who do just that-a move some of their family and friends consider to be a 'half-assed scheme' at best. With little money and even even less nautical experience they leave their small-town home in Arkansas to embark on an adventure they hope will last for a year or two but which evolves into a quarter-century voyage of discovery spanning half the world. Come along with Randy and Cheryl as they cruise their small boat to intriguing destinations that you won't find in any tourist brochure. Along the way they discover the best and worst the sailing life has to offer as they visit twenty-nine countries in the Caribbean, Central and South America and the South Pacific. Their adventures and misadventures include encounters with hurricanes, thieves, drug smugglers and a disastrous tsunami as well as lasting new friendships formed with local people and fellow sailors all along their route. Cruising under sail is a lifestyle like no other and though there are sometimes hardships, those who take the plunge will be rewarded with a life of adventure and freedom that may be impossible to find any other way in the modern world.
