Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Didactics - Common Didactics, Educational Objectives, Methods, language: English, abstract: The present study explores the role of the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) in primary government schools in Bangalore South District, Karnataka. This study compares a minority school with two Kannada medium governments' schools to note how functional SDMCs are, the level of awareness among the SDMC members, and the rules and regulations of the SDMC. The Government of India and the State Governments, since independence, made education as an important tool to bring about socio-economic development in the country. There has been a lot of growth in the educational system. However, the outcomes in terms of enrolment, retention and quality of education have not made huge progress over the last five decades. The intention of making elementary education universal in the country and improving its quality remains a challenge. India has the highest number of illiterate populations as compared to other countries. There have been studies which tell that in order to improve the overall development of the schools; we need to encourage community participation. For effective functioning of the school, community participation in terms of parent-teacher-student interaction is a need of the hour. A decentralized approach in education is the most effective outcome to improve the quality of education. The task force report by Raja Ramanna Committee on quality improvement on elementary education introduced the importance of community participation and management for guaranteeing quality education and encouraging community participation through legislation by establishing SDMC. Karnataka was the first state in adopting SDMC. In 2001, the Government of Karnataka ordered that all the schools should have SDMC as a mandatory body by replacing VEC to bring a "qualitative change" in the educational system and to encourage the role

Book excerpt: This volume presents the grassroots experiences, problems encountered, and lessons learnt from initiatives launched in five Indian states. The contributors cover a range of important issues including how community participation works in an environment characterized by deep-rooted socio-economic divisions; the equitable distribution of participation; identifying and defining the community; and ensuring the genuine representation of those who are traditionally excluded from decision-making in rural areas./-//-/ The five case studies cover Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Bihar and Kerala. They collectively shed light on how decentralization in education has been actualized in different parts of the country. These experiences contain valuable insights which can be fruitfully applied to the primary education sector. A theme running through the volume as a whole is ways to bring about genuine partnerships between civil society, the administration and NGOs in the drive to achieve universal education.

It studies the functioning of gram sabhas, panchayats, school development committees, water supply and sanitation committees, Residents Welfare Associations, and rural development schemes like the MGNREGS, analysing their effectiveness and tracing the political, administrative, and fiscal powers the local government wields. With case studies from different Indian states, the book examines the functioning of local governance mechanisms and institutions in relation to crucial issues such as citizen participation, the participation of women and disadvantaged groups, fiscal decentralisation, peace-building, economic development, and education, among others. Comprehensive and insightful, this book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of development studies, political science, public policy, governance studies, regional development, political economy, political sociology, public administration, and South Asian studies, especially those focusing on India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is a multi-racial country. Different parts have different cultural traits and levels of development. It is not uncommon to find that there are certain tribes, which are not yet touched even by the fringe of civilization. Aboriginal are examples of this. The word tribe is taken to denote a primary aggregate of people lining under primitive or barbarous condition under a headman or chief. Tribes is a group of families living as a community under one or more chiefs, united by language and customs. The main and vital objective of this volume is to make in the book a few selected articles that represent some kind of contributions to the knowledge of tribal education. While writing the articles I have tried completely to emphasis on concept, principles and applied aspects of tribal education. This volume will be highly useful to faculty members, researchers, policy makers, local self govt. and NGOs working on tribal development and to the general public.
