The results of his actions set off international action and he is referred to as the Rogue Fighter Pilot. The El Nino Spring delves deep into the dysfunctional relationships that develop after a NASA flight test center is left with memories of greater days and more entrepreneurial past that led to manned space programs. In Amends, a heroic combat pilot falls into hard times after his rescue from North Vietnam during the bombing campaign of the mid-sixties. In the view of his contemporaries he is a hero-a view not shared by others. The Ferris Wheel at Casa Grande involves a mystery about parentage. In The Opal Ring, client privilege becomes a dangerous element to a young woman lawyer.

Book excerpt: During the roaring twenties, Jessie Miller fled a passionless marriage in the backwaters of Australia. She arrived in London and fell in with the Bright Young Things, gin-soaked boho-chic intellectuals. Captain William Lancaster, married himself and fresh from the Royal Air Force, planned to out-do Lindbergh by flying from London to Melbourne. During their a half-year journey across the globe, the two fell in love. After the crash of 1929 the limelight faded quickly. Jessie, planning a memoir, picked Haden Clarke as her ghostwriter. Their toxic mix of personalities and bootleg booze led to a shocking crime and a trial that scandalized the world. -- adapted from jacket

Book excerpt: This improbable aviation adventure will take you on a thirty-six year journey from five-star hotels to back alleys and greasy cargo ramps. Join the author, Ace Abbott, on a roller coaster ride of an aviation career, as he transitions from hobnobbing with international icons, like Jimmy Buffett, to bartering in order to get some critical jet fuel. The author s primary source of motivation in writing his story is the desire to share a wonderful adventure with pilots of all backgrounds who have had similar careers and to inform aspiring pilots of the unique nuances of an aviation career. Twenty-five employers later, you will get to ride on Ace's final flight in a 727 while you gain insight into the potential catastrophe of a pilot s brief but potentially fatal inattention. This aviation exposé will introduce the reader to aspects of aviation never before seen from the previously unexplored dark side of commercial aviation. The secondary theme of this book is very relevant to the current front and center news topic of aviation safety. Included in The Rogue Aviator is an insider s look at commercial aviation and the FAA. With today s focus on aviation safety and the role of the FAA to insure our safety in the air, the author addresses his thoughts on these vital areas.

Not only are they interesting, but I found myself relishing getting to the next chapter to find out what Frederick Zinn was doing during the next stage of his life." ---Alan Roesler, founding member, League of World War I Aviation Historians, and former Managing Editor, Over the Front Praise for Blaine Pardoe's previous military histories (which average 4.5-star customer reviews on Amazon.com): Terror of the Autumn Skies: The True Story of Frank Luke, America's Rogue Ace of World War I "This painstaking biography of World War I ace Frank Luke will earn Pardoe kudos . . . Pardoe has flown a very straight course in researching and recounting Luke's myth-ridden life. . . . Thorough annotation makes the book that much more valuable to WWI aviation scholars as well as for more casual air-combat buffs." ---Booklist The Cruise of the Sea Eagle: The Amazing True Story of Imperial Germany's Gentleman Pirate "This is a gem of a story, well told, and nicely laid out with photos, maps, and charts that cleverly illuminate the lost era of ‘gentlemen pirates' at sea . . . [German commerce raider Felix von Luckner's] legend lives on in this lively and readable biography." ---Admiral James Stavridis, U.S. Navy, Naval History Few people have ever heard of Frederick Zinn, yet even today airmen's families are touched by this man and the work he performed in both world wars. Zinn created the techniques still in use to determine the final fate of airmen missing in action. The last line of the Air Force Creed reads, "We will leave no airman behind." Zinn made that promise possible. Blaine Pardoe weaves together the complex story of a man who brought peace and closure to countless families who lost airmen during both world wars. His lasting contribution to warfare was a combination of his methodology for locating the remains of missing pilots (known as the Zinn system) and his innovation of imprinting all aircraft parts with the same serial number so that if a wreck was located, the crewman could be identified. The tradition he established for seeking and recovering airmen is carried on to this day. Blaine Pardoe is an accomplished author who has published dozens of military fiction novels and other books, including the widely acclaimed Cubicle Warfare: Self-Defense Tactics for Today's Hypercompetitive Workplace; Terror of the Autumn Skies: The True Story of Frank Luke, America's Rogue Ace of World War I; and The Cruise of the Sea Eagle: The Amazing True Story of Imperial Germany's Gentleman Pirate. Book excerpt: The narrative description and condensed history of the Spitfire's construction, combat career and post-war service, bought together to tell the complete, concise history of the world's most famous aircraft of all time and undoubtedly the finest fighter of World War II. When Spitfire at War first appeared in 1974, it enjoyed critical acclaim, for the aircraft had never been described in such terms and detail before. It was followed by a second volume in 1985 and a third volume in 1990. All three volumes sold well and are hailed as classic works on the subject. These important works have been out of print for more than a decade, thereby denying them to the current breed of aviation buffs. The time has come to re-issue the three books as a single volume, the author 'cherry-picking' the choice cuts to produce the finest title on the mighty and beloved Spitfire.

Book excerpt: JAP is a story about a young man who somehow, through a series of accidents intentions, mistakes and drive became a Naval Aviator, no mean feat by any accounts. Having survived the grim reaper several times during his eight years of flying on active duty with the Navy he has come to believe, sort of, that he is a good aviator and can take care of just about anything that arises in the realm of flying. He has disgustedly left active duty flying with the Navy as the result of witnessing inept officers who should never have made the grade continue to fly and serve without any leadership skills or command authority amounting to anything effective. Most of them were, in the young man's opinion, timid beings who were only concerned with keeping their status quo resulting in their refusal to make decisions let alone lead in any forward power projections. His decision to leave the Navy and throw his lot in with the airline pilot's career was based on his perception that an airline captain just had to be made of stronger stuff. That idea was also doomed to an early failure when he actually started to fly with the pilots who make up the airborne operation of the airline. He found the same weaknesses on the part of the airline pilots that he had witnessed in the Navy pilots he had flown with. Still struggling to find perfection the young man (named Kruger in the book) tries flying with the Naval Reserve pilots only to find, once more, that those pilots were even worse than the two groups that he had flown with earlier. Kruger's worst nightmare finally comes to pass when he finds himself making some bad mistakes and decisions just like all of the other pilots he has ever encountered. He has become a JAP or "just another pilot" like all of the others. In spite of all of the disappointments he encounters he still has fun and fulfillment flying and is convinced that he could really do no job other than flying. Flying has always been described as hours and hours of boredom punctuated by moments of stark terror. Kruger's experiences follow that pattern except the boring hours are interesting also. Kruger had always considered that the most exhilarating and exciting time you could ever experience was when you were right on the dangerous edge of things; when you had less than a fifty percent chance of surviving the situation you were in and when you finally came out on top, alive and well albeit that your heart was trying to go into tachycardia and your breathing could only be described as panting. There is no rush better than this. There are no punches pulled in the book. The author tells it like it really was without cutting corners or glossing over the facts. It is what it was. People are people and no one is perfect. We all "have warts" no matter how good we look and usually the ones who boast the most and are the models of perfection are the ones who have the most faults. As the Bible says, "Judge not least ye be judged". Kruger finds that to be very true and, as a result he mulls each flight in his mind in an effort to try to perfect what he has just done. There are no heroes in the book but there are a lot of truths if you can find them.

Following the D-Day landings, Battle of Britain hero Tom Neil was assigned as an RAF liaison to an American fighter squadron. As the Allies pushed east, Neil commandeered an abandoned Spitfire as his own personal aeroplane. Erasing any evidence of its provenance and stripping it down to bare metal, it became the RAF's only silver Spitfire. Alongside his US comrades, he took the silver Spitfire into battle until, with the war's end, he was forced to make a difficult decision. Faced with too many questions about the mysterious rogue fighter, he contemplated increasingly desperate measures to offload it, including bailing out mid-Channel. He eventually left the Spitfire at Worthy Down, never to be seen again. THE SILVER SPITFIRE is the first-hand, gripping story of Neil's heroic experience as an RAF fighter pilot and his reminiscences with his very own personal Spitfire.
