Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his travel narrative Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes (1879), Robert Louis Stevenson declares, "I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move. " Taking up the concepts of time, place, and memory, the contributors to this collection explore in what ways the dynamic view of life suggested by this quotation permeates Stevenson's work. The essays adopt a wide variety of critical approaches, including post-colonial theory, post-structuralism, new historicism, art history, and philosophy, making use of the vast array of literary materials that Stevenson left across a global journey that began in Scotland in 1850 and ended in Samoa in 1894. These range from travel journals, letters, and classic literary staples such as Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, to rarely read masterpieces such as The Master of Ballantrae or The Ebb-Tide. While much recent scholarship on Stevenson foregrounds geography, the present volume also examines the theme of movement across memory, time, and generic boundaries. Taken together, the essays offer a view of Stevenson that demonstrates how the protean nature of his literary output reflects the radical developments in science, technology, and culture that characterized the age in which he lived.

Book Synopsis Stevenson's Scotland by : Robert Louis Stevenson
Download or read book Stevenson's Scotland written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by Mercat Press Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson travelled the world from Silverado to Samoa, where he died aged only 44. Wherever he went his love of his native land stayed with him, and he dreamed of resting from his travels at last in a Scottish churchyard. Some of his best writing is about Scotland, and he described it with warmth and intensity, from rugged offshore-lighthouses and bleak Highland moors to his beloved Pentlands and teeming Edinburgh streets. For the first time, the best of his writings about Scotland, in prose and verse, including the entire text of Edinburgh Picturesque Notes, extracts from his letters, and two previously unpublished items, are collected in one entertaining and evocative anthology. His words are presented in the form of a journey, starting in Edinburgh, crossing over the Forth to Fife, then heading via Kirriemuir, Pitlochry and Blair Atholl as far as the Orkney Islands and Shetland. From here the route returns through the Highlands to the west coast, Oban and the Islands; down to Dumfries and Galloway, cutting across Border country and back again, inevitably, to Edinburgh and home. The editors, Tom Hubbard and Duncan Glen, set the selection in context with an informative introduction and a generous helping of notes. The reader is taken on a magical tour and sees the familiar land of Scotland through a poet's fresh and penetrating eye.

Book Synopsis God & the Gothic by : Alison Milbank
Download or read book God & the Gothic written by Alison Milbank and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-10 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God and the Gothic: Romance and Reality in the English Literary Tradition provides a complete reimagining of the Gothic literary canon to examine its engagement with theological ideas, tracing its origins to the apocalyptic critique of the Reformation female martyrs, and to the Dissolution of the monasteries, now seen as usurping authorities. A double gesture of repudiation and regret is evident in the consequent search for political, aesthetic, and religious mediation, which characterizes the aftermath of the Glorious Revolution and Whig Providential discourse. Part one interprets eighteenth-century Gothic novels in terms of this Whig debate about the true heir, culminating in Ann Radcliffe's melancholic theology which uses distance and loss to enable a new mediation. Part two traces the origins of the doppelgänger in Calvinist anthropology and establishes that its employment by a range of Scottish writers offers a productive mode of subjectivity, necessary in a culture equally concerned with historical continuity. In part three, Irish Gothic is shown to be seeking ways to mediate between Catholic and Protestant identities through models of sacrifice and ecumenism, while in part four nineteenth-century Gothic is read as increasingly theological, responding to materialism by a project of re-enchantment. Ghost story writers assert the metaphysical priority of the supernatural to establish the material world. Arthur Machen and other Order of the Golden Dawn members explore the double and other Gothic tropes as modes of mystical ascent, while raising the physical to the spiritual through magical control, and the M. R. James circle restore the sacramental and psychical efficacy of objects.
