Book excerpt: Know the Rishis and RishikÄ s, the early creations and their descendents, the wise men and women of the unknown and unfathomable eons, that were the embodiments of knowledge and sublimity, purity and humanity and compassion and humility. They were great scientists, discoverers, and research guides; and inventors of food-grain to fruits and flowers; of ploughs and yoke to Ä€yurveda and herbal medicines; from boats and ships to road-transports and planes; of everything that we possess today, from celestial bodies to metaphysics, geometry, trigonometry, algebra and photography, and numerous other things. We are proud of them and their gifts. Know the Rishis and RishikÄ s that knew and taught all about the earth and universe; planets and constellation; climate, seasons and meteorology, clouds, rain, water, fire, space and soil. They gave us the ways of constructing huts and Ä shramas to temples and palaces, and made us know the physical body and spiritual self, the outer reality and the inner truth, and taught us the ways of health, wealth, peace, pleasure and prosperity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A translation of the complete Rig Veda into English with a state-of-the-art search and discovery capability. This is the first Digital Book that aims to answer the question - "What is in the Rig Veda and where do I find it?" The Vedic heritage, and the Rig Veda in particular, is the foundation of Hinduism. Yoga, Dharma, Spirituality and so much of what defines Indian thought and culture today, derive from it. It was composed by famous Rishis who are household names, and yet, for many of us, its contents still remain a mystery. This book hopes to make the Rig Veda a little more accessible. Horace Hayman Wilson wrote the first translation of the Rig Veda into English. His work is notable because it consciously tries to be true to the ancient sources. It is an important work of scholarship that this ebook hopes to preserve and extend. This is the first Digital version of Wilson's work. It converts all the six volumes into a single, easy to carry ebook. It then embeds a state of the art search capability using AI and NLP. It extends this with Serendipity, to help us discover what maybe relevant even when we are not sure what to look for. This work aims to be your reference of choice when you are looking for something in the Rig Veda. It also includes an Introduction where you can find some important Suktas and references, Rishi families and their compositions, elements of Vedic tradition like Danastutis and Apri Suktas, and much more.

A relatively early Purana, its composition can be traced back to approximately 400 to 600 BCE, predating many other Hindu texts. Volume 1 of the two-volume set tells stories on creation, cosmology, and geography, with lineages of rishis and shraddha rites, ending with Parashurama's story. Translated and annotated from the original Sanskrit by Bibek Debroy, this edition of the Brahmanda Purana is a precious and rare volume for the lovers of Hindu mythology and religion. This is the sixth volume in the Purana series; the others include the Bhagavata Purana, the Markandeya Purana, the Brahma Purana, Vishnu Purana, and the Shiva Purana.’

Had it not been done at that time, the whole of Kashmir would have been an integral part of India today. Pakistan-occupied Kashmir would not have come into existence. Regrettably, it was never brought into the discussion as to why an untimely ceasefire was declared? What was the compulsion? In no history has it been written that the war-winning army declares a ceasefire at a time when a large part of its territory is occupied by foreign forces! Then the United Nations was approached on 1st January, 1948. This decision was also a personal decision of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It was a big mistake; the country bore the brunt of it for years. —Amit Shah Union Home Minister We saw that the Leftist, elite society, the power system, the media had already established their narrative over the last several decades. These widely propagated narratives were the so-called truth. It was about our society, nationality, Ramjanmabhoomi, the inalienability and inevitability of Article 370 in Kashmir, social harmony, the role model of the country, the Western model of development, the imperative of English, etc. These were in relation to the beliefs and faith in so-called values which developed an inferiority complex about our history and past at the cost of our history and glorious knowledge tradition. —Anil Joshi Vice Chairman, Kendriya Hindi Shikshan Manda

Book excerpt: The novel Rishika by Dipavali Sen describes a journey that Ila, a working woman in the NCR, takes in her lonely flat by reading ancient Indian texts through the night. She reads about the lives of Rishikas or women sages mentioned in the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Puranas. She re-lives as well as re-creates those stories with her own contemporary approach. Based on original material in Sanskrit, this book provides - through Ila - a fresh look at an essentially male-dominated world where women are still doing their tapasya and coping with challenges. Interspersed with the lives of Gargi, Apala and the like, there are snippets of Ila’s own life. This is what makes the book a blend of the present and the past.

Book excerpt: A systematic presentation of the status of women of India throughout the long history of about 6000 years has been presented starting from the Vedic times to the post-independence period. A detailed description of the status of women during the Vedic times, which is rarely available in any of the existing literature, and in the following periods is very significant to the study of this subject. The author has discussed how the political and religious conditions over the periods have affected the conditions of women. The age-old evils, which had got firmly entrenched in the Indian society, such as the tradition of Sati, illiteracy, child marriages, and deplorable treatment of widows and so on, still persist and some new ones have joined the list. These are: bride burning, dowry, female feticide, domestic violence, to name a few. Short biographies of some outstanding women have been included to illustrate that in spite of adversities some women had achieved eminence. To the credit of the Indian Government, legislative measures have been taken to protect and improve the status of women after independence and just prior to it. These have been outlined. Unfortunately, these measures have not been able to achieve their intended results on account of wide spread corruption and lack of education and awareness among women, especially in the rural areas. A snapshot of the present conditions is given along with concluding remarks and recommendations for improvement. Improvement of the status of women is extremely improvement for India if it wishes to become a developed and progressive country and a world leader in culture and ideology.

It often involves the empowered developing confidence in their capacities. The subject of empowerment of women has becoming a burning issue all over the world including India since last few decades. Many agencies of United Nations in their reports have emphasized that gender issue is to be given utmost priority. It is held that women now cannot be asked to wait for any more for equality.Inequalities between men and women and discrimination against women have also been age-old issues all over the world. Thus, women’s quest for equality with man is a universal phenomenon. The sex ratio in India has improved from 930 in 1971 to 940 as per 2011 census. The female literacy has also increased from 18.3% in 1961 to 74% in 2011, in addition to decrease in male-female literacy gap from 26.6% in 1981 to 16.7% in 2011.These indicators may show improvement, however, the pace is not desirable. The economic empowerment of women is a vital element of strong economic growth in any country. Empowering women enhances their ability to influence changes and to create a better society.Empowering Women through Education: “Education is one of the most important means of empowering women with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence necessary to participate fully in the development process”. In the political field, the reservation for women is a significant step forward towards their political empowerment. When thirty-three percent reservation for women in Parliament becomes a reality, women’s voice will be heard in the highest forum of democracy.into lime-light the constraints and benefits of empowering women at the integrated process of development and social change. All the articles have been covering a wide range of issues relating to women, particularly women living at grassroots level, downtrodden and helpless. The Article on ‘Efficacy of Entrepreneurial Training Self Help Group Women’ presents the entrepreneurial training given to SHG women to equip them with all the skills required for the establishment and smooth functioning of their micro-enterprises and their responses during pre-training, training and post-training phases.I hope that this book is highly useful to the students and researchers in women’s studies and related fields. Book excerpt: Ancient Vedic India was a land where knowledge and wisdom were revered as the greatest wealth. There intellectual Brahmins, sagely Rishis, and equipoised Munis were honored for their incomparable knowledge. At a time when writing was not well developed, Smriti or memory was the main medium by which knowledge was recorded before transmitting it through Vak or the spoken word from a preceptor Guru to his disciples Shishyas. Mantras or hymns composed in ancient Sanskrit were used to remember complex knowledge along with Katha or thought-provoking tales. These tales besides being entertaining were also enlightening and promoted deeper Vichara or contemplation. In this first volume of Rishis Tales, U. Mahesh Prabhu presents 21 such stories translated from the ancient Sanskrit. Tales that continue to inspire millions of people towards the true understanding of Self, wisdom, peace, and prosperity.

The book avoids pedantic discussions and presents in a rapid manner the core of the Vedic discovery. The Vedic Rishis have described the human journey, its difficulties and its battles as also the secret of the victory. The central issue is how to perfect our ordinary psychological faculties. The entire science of yoga owes its origin to the Vedic psychology. At present mankind is passing through a crisis which can be met only at the deepest psychological level. In this context, the Veda has contemporary relevance. The author has presented the quintessence of the Vedic message in a few brief chapters, and the language is deliberately non-technical. There is a growing thirst among young people who want to be introduced to the secret of the Veda and to understand how various developments of Indian culture are rooted in the Veda. The present book may serve to meet this need. The book also contains material, both in the main text and in the appendices, which may also be of interest to scholars.
