Book excerpt: The Teachers Centre for Continuing Education was established to provide opportunities for teachers to undertake further study in order to upgrade their professional qualifications. The Western Australia Post Secondary Education Commission, acting on the Partridge Report on Post-Secondary Education in Western Australia, investigated recommendations that the Centre be phased out. It was suggested that a multi-campus education institution offer part-time and external courses for inservice study. Reasons for this change include: (1) declining Centre enrollment; (2) decreased need for the Centre, which was originally established when opportunity for inservice study was limited; (3) ability of existing education institutions to offer more appropriate courses; and (4) limited geographic applicability of Centre courses. The Commission recommends that the Teachers Centre for Continuing Education be phased out over a three year period. This phasing out must be well publicized. No new students are to be permitted to enroll, and all possible steps to ensure that the rights and interests of Centre staff members are preserved are to be taken. (CJ)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers selected papers from the Hong Kong Association for Educational Communications and Technology 2019 International Conference on the theme of “Shaping the Future of Education, Communication and Technology.” It contributes to a scholarly discussion that looks beyond what future media and technology can offer for education, and reflects on best practices and lessons learned from applying new media and technology in a wide range of fields. Scholars from educational technology, communication, and higher education share their research work in various formats such as empirical research, best-practice case studies, literature reviews, etc. The topics of the papers are divided into four main areas, including curriculum, pedagogy and instructional design; teaching and learning experiences with technology; online learning and open education resources; and communication and media. The book’s unique quality is its combination of perspectives and research work on communication, education and technology. Thus, it will encourage an interdisciplinary discourse and exchange concerning communication, new media, and educational practices.

Drawing from in-depth interviews and observations of 30 students (aged 45 to 73) in a TESOL graduate program, this book provides portraits of these individuals as they develop as teachers. It describes the processes they go through to launch their teaching careers, the successes and challenges they face, and the evolving significance of their work in their overall life goals and achievements. A welcome addition to the growing literature on teacher development, this book will be an important resource for teacher trainers and anyone working in TESOL.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lifelong Learning is now central to the Hong Kong education reform agenda. As a recent Education Commission Report put it, 'lifelong learning is the key to Hong Kong's success'. This book focuses on the post-secondary, continuing and professional education (CPE) sector. It includes contributions from Hong Kong practitioners in the field as well as from eminent international scholars who are well acquainted with CPE in Hong Kong. The book is in three parts. The first part traces recent developments in CPE in Hong Kong and offers an up-to-date account of policy, programmes and provision. A profile of lifelong learners, drawing on recent research findings, is also provided. In the second part, practitioners from a diverse range of subject disciplines offer their perspectives on the issues. This part of the book contains a wealth of ideas and examples illustrating the practice of lifelong learning in Hong Kong. The third part examines the forces shaping post-secondary education in Hong Kong and explores emergent issues. Topics discussed include: the convergence of higher and continuing education, work-based learning, cross-border collaborations with mainland China, Hong Kong vocational education and training policy, and the legal challenges posed by on-line learning. Written primarily for academic managers and teachers in the adult and continuing education sector, this book will also be of interest to (postgraduate) students of lifelong learning, comparative education researchers, CPE policy-makers, employers and human resources managers. It is a timely contribution to the current debate on the future shape of education in Hong Kong. The two Editors' combined experience in tertiary sector teaching and administration totals 57 years. They are now both working in the School of Professional and Continuing Education, The University of Hong Kong (HKU SPACE). John Cribbin is the School Secretary and Registrar; a graduate of University College London and Leicester University, he has previously worked at King's College London and the UK Open University. Peter Kennedy is a Senior Programme Director responsible for programmes in the fields of human resource management and training, as well as in English and theatre studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premises of this 2-year study are: first, what teachers know and can do is the most important influence on what students learn; second, recruiting, preparing, and retaining good teachers is the central strategy for improving our schools; and third, school reform cannot succeed unless it focuses on creating conditions in which teachers can teach and teach well. This report focuses on perceived barriers to achieving these goals: (1) low expectations for student performance; (2) unenforced standards for teachers; (3) major flaws in teacher preparation; (4) slipshod teacher recruiting; (5) inadequate induction for beginning techers; (6) inadequaate professional development opportunities and few rewards for knowledge and skill; and (7) schools that are structured for failure rather than success. To address these concerns, five major recommendations are offered: get serious about standards for both students and teachers; reinvent teacher preparation and professional development; fix teacher recruitment and put qualified teachers in every classroom; encourage and reward teacher knowledge and skill; and create schools that are organized for student and teacher success. Five appendixes provide a schedule of commission meetings and forums; lists of presentations, advisers, research contributors, and commissioned papers; and state-by-state data on indicators of attention to teaching quality, July 1996.
