Download or read book Rat Girl written by Kristin Hersh and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-08-31 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the 25 Greatest Rock Memoirs of All Time” --Rolling Stone Magazine (#8) “Sensitive and emotionally raw… it’s also wildly funny”--The New York Times Book Review A powerfully original memoir of pregnancy and mental illness by the legendary founder of the seminal rock band Throwing Muses, 'a magnificently charged union of Sylvia Plath and Patti Smith' - The Guardian Kristin Hersh was a preternaturally bright teenager, starting college at fifteen and with her band, Throwing Muses, playing rock clubs she was too young to frequent. By the age of seventeen she was living in her car, unable to sleep for the torment of strange songs swimming around her head - the songs for which she is now known. But just as her band was taking off, Hersh was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. Rat Girl chronicles the unraveling of a young woman's personality, culminating in a suicide attempt; and then her arduous yet inspiring recovery, her unplanned pregnancy at the age of 19, and the birth of her first son. Playful, vivid, and wonderfully warm, this is a visceral and brave memoir by a truly original performer, told in a truly original voice.
Book Synopsis Opening Pandora's Box by : G. Nigel Gilbert
Download or read book Opening Pandora's Box written by G. Nigel Gilbert and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1984-02-23 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a fresh approach to sociological analysis and, in particular, to the analysis of scientific culture. It moves away from previous studies, which have tended to focus on scientists' actions and beliefs to show that analysis of scientific discourse can be productive and revealing. The book demonstrates that scientists produce varying accounts of their actions and beliefs in different social situations. Rather than attempting to extract one coherent interpretation from these diverse accounts, the study identifies two basic scientific repertoires and shows how scientists use them to create their discourse. This provides a point of departure for more complex analytical topics. Discourse analysis is applied to show how different degrees of 'consensus' can be ascribed to the same group of scientists at a given moment in time through the application of standard interpretive techniques. Finally, discourse analysis is used to explore scientists' humour, a neglected topic that is shown to provide important insights into the normally hidden interpretive regularities which underlie the cultural diversity of science.

Book Synopsis Pandora's Sisters by : Michael Stephen Fuchs
Download or read book Pandora's Sisters written by Michael Stephen Fuchs and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'You want to know who gave you your immortal soul? You want a personal relationship with God? Well, we found God. We're all up in God. We've got God's private number. And so do you: imprinted a hundred trillion times – once in every living cell in your big dripping corpus.' So says a woman with a pole-axe pressed to her neck, and the solution to the entire mystery of human existence clutched between her palms. Two weeks earlier, she was just your average British expat with a PhD, working in Silicon Valley as an artificial intelligence designer for ultra-violent video games, spending the evenings hanging out with her pet chimp – and wondering how something as weird as human consciousness could have evolved through mere Darwinian selection. But when a mysterious and disconcertingly attractive behavioural geneticist, and a hotshot cryptologist with strange religious affiliations, stroll into her life, she begins looking for answers in the backwaters of the human genome – the 97% written off by scientists as ;junk DNA;. And soon after, when men in very strange hats come looking for her hard drive, shooting first and never really asking any questions, she finds herself on the run – pursued by multiple squads of heavily-armed religious zealots, the Feds, and worse. All seek to obtain, or to suppress forever, the key to the revelatory stretch of DNA known as The Pandora Sequence. The outcome of their race to control this explosive secret will forever alter how humanity regards itself - that is, if anyone lives long enough to tell the tale.
Download or read book Primary Stein written by Janet Boyd and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent scholarly trends and controversies in Gertrude Stein scholarship have focused on her politics and her friendships as well as on Stein the collector, the celebrity, the visual icon. Clearly, these recent examinations not only deepen our understanding of Stein but also attest to her staying power. Yet Stein’s writing itself too often remains secondary. The central premise of Primary Stein is that an extraordinary amount of textual scholarship remains to be done on Stein’s work, whether the well-known, the little-known, or yet unpublished. The essays in Primary Stein draw on recent interdisciplinary examinations, using cultural and historical contexts to enrich and complicate how we might read, understand, and teach Stein’s writing. Following Stein’s own efforts throughout her lifetime to shift the focus from her personality to her writing, these innovative essays turn the lens back to a wide range of her texts, including novels, plays, lectures and poetry. Each essay takes Stein’s primary works as its core interpretive focus, returning scholarly conversations to the challenges and pleasures of working with Stein’s texts.

Download or read book Find Me written by André Aciman and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller In this spellbinding exploration of the varieties of love, the author of the worldwide bestseller Call Me by Your Name revisits its complex and beguiling characters decades after their first meeting. No novel in recent memory has spoken more movingly to contemporary readers about the nature of love than André Aciman’s haunting Call Me by Your Name. First published in 2007, it was hailed as “a love letter, an invocation . . . an exceptionally beautiful book” (Stacey D’Erasmo, The New York Times Book Review). Nearly three quarters of a million copies have been sold, and the book became a much-loved, Academy Award–winning film starring Timothée Chalamet as the young Elio and Armie Hammer as Oliver, the graduate student with whom he falls in love. In Find Me, Aciman shows us Elio’s father, Samuel, on a trip from Florence to Rome to visit Elio, who has become a gifted classical pianist. A chance encounter on the train with a beautiful young woman upends Sami’s plans and changes his life forever. Elio soon moves to Paris, where he, too, has a consequential affair, while Oliver, now a New England college professor with a family, suddenly finds himself contemplating a return trip across the Atlantic. Aciman is a master of sensibility, of the intimate details and the emotional nuances that are the substance of passion. Find Me brings us back inside the magic circle of one of our greatest contemporary romances to ask if, in fact, true love ever dies.
