Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fields of organizational climate and organizational culture have co-existed for several decades with very little integration between the two. In Organizational Climate and Culture: An Introduction to Theory, Research, and Practice, Mark G. Ehrhart, Benjamin Schneider, and William H. Macey break down the barriers between these fields to encourage a broader understanding of how an organization’s environment affects its functioning and performance. Building on in-depth reviews of the development of both the organizational climate and organizational culture literatures, the authors identify the key issues that researchers in each field could learn from the other and provide recommendations for the integration of the two. They also identify how practitioners can utilize the key concepts in the two literatures when conducting organizational cultural inquiries and leading change efforts. The end product is an in-depth discussion of organizational climate and culture unlike anything that has come before that provides unique insights for a broad audience of academics, practitioners, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unprecedented advances in the scientific study of personnel selection have given researchers and practitioners new ideas and tools to achieve greater success in measuring and linking skills, knowledge, and abilities to job performance requirements. Personnel Selection in Organizations is a timely presentation of emerging issues in research and practice, providing new and exciting perspectives on the theoretical, empirical, and societal changes that will affect the study and practice of virtually every personnel selection topic. The careful analysis of current procedures and practices, joined with an insightful identification of areas where ongoing research is needed, will be a valuable resource for all those interested in the continuing development of the field. In sixteen original chapters, leading experts highlight the personnel selection issues that will receive increasing attention in the years ahead. The authors thoughtfully explore key subjects in this rapidly changing field, including job analysis, criterion development, biographical and personality measures, the concept of validity, the changing demographics of the work population, the decline of the manufacturing economy, and the development of small organizations. They examine specific topics such as recruitment and retention, structured versus unstructured interviews, the ethics and effectiveness of computerized psychological testing, perceptions of selection fairness, productivity, turnover, and absenteeism. They also cover broader, less traditional concerns including downsizing and retirement, selection and staffing as a corporate strategy, promoting job and life satisfaction, organizational citizenship, and commitment.

Book excerpt: This authoritative volume reviews the breadth of current scientific knowledge on subjective well-being (SWB): its definition, causes and consequences, measurement, and practical applications that may help people become happier. Leading experts explore the connections between SWB and a range of intrapersonal and interpersonal phenomena, including personality, health, relationship satisfaction, wealth, cognitive processes, emotion regulation, religion, family life, school and work experiences, and culture. Interventions and practices that enhance SWB are examined, with attention to both their benefits and limitations. The concluding chapter from Ed Diener dispels common myths in the field and presents a thoughtful agenda for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational surveys are widely recognized as a powerful tool for measuring and improving employee commitment. If poorly designed and administered, however, they can create disappointment and cynicism. There are many excellent books on sampling methodology and statistical analysis, but little has been written so far for those responsible for designing and implementing surveys in organizations. Now Allan H Church and Janine Waclawski have drawn on their extensive experience in this field to develop a seven-step model covering the entire process, from initiation to final evaluation. They explain in detail how to devise and administer different types of organizational surveys, leading the reader systematically through the various stages involved. Their text is supported throughout by examples, specimen documentation, work sheets and case studies from a variety of organizational settings. They pay particular attention to the political and human sensitivities concerned and show how to surmount the many potential barriers to a successful outcome. Designing and Using Organizational Surveys is a highly practical guide to one of the most effective methods available for organizational diagnosis and change.
