Book excerpt: A provocative novel by the most influential living French writer, Recollections of the Golden Triangle is a tour de force: a literary thriller constructed of wildly diverse elements--fantasy and dream, erotic invention, and the stuff of popular fiction and movies taken to its farthest limits. A secret door that is opened slightly by an electronic device, a beautiful hanged factory girl, a pale young aristocrat whose blood apparently nourishes his vampiric lover, the evil Dr. Morgan who conducts his experiments in "tertiary dream behavior," the beautiful and sinister women from the world of horror films, and the investigating police, who are not all what they seem to be, are just some of the ingredients of this intriguing new novel by the French master of the intellectual thriller, whose novels and films have effectively changed the way we can look at the "real" world today. Recollections of the Golden Triangle challenges the reader to find his own meaning in its descriptions, clues, and contradictions, and to play detective by assembling the pieces of the fictional puzzle.

This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here We Go! Recollections From The Golden Age of Airlift is a retrospective of military propeller aviation and the men who flew the giant C-124 during the 1950s and 60s. These are true stories, powered by reciprocating engines, to worldwide adventures involving weather, support for armed conflicts, and cantankerous aircraft, operated by both young crewmembers and grizzled veterans from World War Two, the Berlin Airlift, and Korea. These recollections bring to life the immediacy of day-to-day operations as the military airlift business changed from an airline mentality to the modern strategic and tactical emphasis of today. Brown writes with a personal touch and obvious affection for a time and an Air Force that no longer exists. You'll see the social interactions and relationships that characterized squadron life. His personal accounts are told with a perspective that puts you there, during, and after the mission, unwinding with squadron mates, telling the stories, warts and all. You'll come away with a better understanding of Airlift, and the world of so-called Trash Haulers as it was before jets and instant communications, when often-colorful aircrews truly carried the system.

Download or read book The Golden Age written by Kenneth Grahame and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Age presents a series of childhood recollections written by Kenneth Grahame. It is a fascinating blend of the reminiscences of Kenneth Grahame's own childhood adventures, imagination, metaphor, and ancient Greek Legends. This style of casting his memories in imagery and metaphor rooted in the culture of Ancient Greece was famous in his era and culture. Rather than a single narrative, this work consists of a collection of short stories about the lives of five children, their mishaps, and other experiences. The children in the book called the adults Olympians and felt they no longer knew how to enjoy and have fun. Each chapter of the book depicts an adventure that the narrator and his friends got into. The author beautifully described the children's games, their view on life, their made-up stories, and their favorite fairytales that are a pleasure to read about.

Book excerpt: If you've loved and cherished The Wind in The Willows, you'll be delighted to read The Golden Age. In this book of reminiscences by Kenneth Grahame, the much loved creator of Winnie The Pooh, readers are granted an insight into the writer's childhood. The Golden Age was published in 1895. Some of the stories in it had already appeared in various magazines. It was greeted by poets like Swinburne with much praise and almost instantly regarded as a classic. What's interesting about The Golden Age is that in this book, Grahame uses the metaphor of Ancient Greek legends and stories as parallels to his own life. The adults are termed "The Olympians" appearing remote, inaccessible and lofty to a child. Their activities are incomprehensible to the young mind while they had no interest in the doings of their wards. Grahame's humorous yet ironical tone lends a touch of fun to the adult world as seen through the eyes of a child. Other chapters describe the fun of being outdoors, visitors and relatives who come to the house, childhood games of Roundheads and Royalists, King Arthur's Knights, bandits and damsels in distress, knights errant, soldiers and princesses and everything else that a group of high spirited children could devise out of their boundless imaginations. Youthful escapades, stolen fruit, daredevil stunts and the carefree days of childhood are vividly captured in The Golden Age. For modern day readers, these recollections are interesting and in almost complete contrast to children's lives today, yet the book is an amusing and easy read for all ages.
Book Synopsis Recollections of My Nonexistence by : Rebecca Solnit
Download or read book Recollections of My Nonexistence written by Rebecca Solnit and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An electric portrait of the artist as a young woman that asks how a writer finds her voice in a society that prefers women to be silent In Recollections of My Nonexistence, Rebecca Solnit describes her formation as a writer and as a feminist in 1980s San Francisco, in an atmosphere of gender violence on the street and throughout society and the exclusion of women from cultural arenas. She tells of being poor, hopeful, and adrift in the city that became her great teacher; of the small apartment that, when she was nineteen, became the home in which she transformed herself; of how punk rock gave form and voice to her own fury and explosive energy. Solnit recounts how she came to recognize the epidemic of violence against women around her, the street harassment that unsettled her, the trauma that changed her, and the authority figures who routinely disdained and disbelieved girls and women, including her. Looking back, she sees all these as consequences of the voicelessness that was and still is the ordinary condition of women, and how she contended with that while becoming a writer and a public voice for women's rights. She explores the forces that liberated her as a person and as a writer--books themselves, the gay men around her who offered other visions of what gender, family, and joy could be, and her eventual arrival in the spacious landscapes and overlooked conflicts of the American West. These influences taught her how to write in the way she has ever since, and gave her a voice that has resonated with and empowered many others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the French master of the avant-garde: “A spy tale whose prime puzzle lies in the philosophical intricacies of its own construction” (Entertainment Weekly). We are in the bombed-out Berlin of 1949, after the Second World War, rendered with an atmosphere reminiscent of Orson Welles’ The Third Man. Henri Robin, a special agent of the French secret service, arrives in the ruined former capital to which he feels linked by a vague but recurrent childhood memory. But the real purpose of his mission has not been revealed to him, for his superiors have decided to afford him only as much information as is indispensable for the action expected of his blind loyalty. But nothing is what it seems, and matters do not turn out as anticipated . . . “Exhibits a sensibility as nervous and contemporary—not to mention witty—as that of any novelist working today.” —The Los Angeles Times “Mirrors, doubles, double agents, repetitions, trompe l’oeil war paintings, dream sequences, sexual torture, a criminal mafia of postwar Nazis and murky memories add to the disquieting, disorienting literary puzzle.” —San Francisco Chronicle “A Gothic masterpiece . . . Repetition is fearfest like no other, and a rewarding text that demands to be reread again and again. The master hasn’t lost his touch.” —The Avon Grove Sun

In this period of no more than fifty years the popularity, abundance and most importantly the unprecedented upsurge in the quality of illustrated books marked an astounding change in the way that publishers, artists and the general public came to view this hitherto insufficiently esteemed art form.
