Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume argues that we must examine the boundaries in fiction and non-fiction crime writing with an awareness of and turn toward the unseen structures and spatial uncertainties that so often lead to and reflect collective fears and anxieties. Drawing upon the insights and expertise of an international array of scholars, the chapters within explore the interplay of the literary, historical, social, and cultural in various modes of crime writing from the 1890s to as recent as 2017. They examine unseen structures and uncertain spaces, and simultaneously provide new insights into the works of iconic authors, such as Christie, and iconic fictional figures, like Holmes, as well as underexplored subjects, including Ukrainian detective fiction of the Soviet period and crime writing by a Bengali police detective at the turn of the twentieth century. The breadth of coverage—of both time and place—is an indicator of a text in which seasoned readers, advanced students, and academics will find new perspectives on crime writing employing theories of cultural memory and deep mapping.
Book Synopsis Popular Culture in Nordic Noir A Study of Selected Works of Maj Sjowall & Per Wahloo, Henning Mankell and Steig Larsson by : Dr. Raunak Singh Rathee
Download or read book Popular Culture in Nordic Noir A Study of Selected Works of Maj Sjowall & Per Wahloo, Henning Mankell and Steig Larsson written by Dr. Raunak Singh Rathee and published by Shineeks Publishers. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses that the genre of crime fiction is suitable for the presentation of the crises, conflicts, and indeterminacies present in the plot of the selected works. This book exposes the darker side of Scandinavian countries, particularly Sweden, as the writers and works selected for the book are based on Swedish society. Though as a matter of fact, Scandinavian countries are considered to be the most egalitarian and progressive welfare societies all over the world. The present book explores how popular culture may prove to be a significant thematic approach to studying Scandinavian crime fiction (also called Nordic Noir). The Swedish authors use popular culture as a tool through which they try to convey their concerns regarding various serious issues like anti-immigration, racism, xenophobia, violence against women, the violence of human rights, crimes like the drug trade, human trafficking, etc. By assigning the central place to Sjowall and Wahloo’s Roseanna (1965), The Laughing Policeman (1968), The Terrorists (1975), Henning Mankell’s Faceless Killers (1991), Sidetracked (1995), The Fifth Women (1996), Steig Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2005), The Girl who Played with Fire (2006), and The Girl who kicked the Hornets’ Nest (2007), this book enunciates the notion of popular culture and crime fiction genre in the propagation of the socio-critical reflections of life in the welfare state. Hence, this work also analyses the plot, characters, and themes in the aforementioned works to locate the elements of popular fiction in Scandinavian crime novels by representing this genre’s ubiquitousness in the twenty-first century.
Book Synopsis Cinema, Suffering and Psychoanalysis by : Laura Stephenson
Download or read book Cinema, Suffering and Psychoanalysis written by Laura Stephenson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cinema, Suffering and Psychoanalysis explores psychological disorder as common to the human condition using a unique three-angled approach: psychoanalysis recognises the inherent suffering encountered by each subject due to developmental phases; psychology applies specific categorisation to how this suffering manifests; cinema depicts suffering through a combination of video and aural elements. Functioning as a culturally reflexive medium, the six feature films analysed, including Black Swan (2010) and The Machinist (2004), represent some of the most common psychological disorders and lived experiences of the contemporary era. This book enters unchartered terrain in cinema scholarship by combining clinical psychology's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Five (DSM-V) to organise and diagnose each character, and psychoanalysis to track the origin, mechanism and affect of the psychological disorder within the narrative trajectory of each film. Lacan's theories on the infantile mirror phase, the Imaginary, and the Symbolic, Žižek's theories on the Real, the big Other and the Event, and Kristeva's theories on abjection and melancholia work in combination with the DSM's classification of symptoms to interpret six contemporary pieces of cinema. By taking into consideration that origin, mechanism, affect and symptomatology are part of an interconnected group, this book explores psychological disorder as part of the human condition, something which contributes to and informs personal identity. More specifically, this research refutes the notion that psychological disorder and psychological health exist as a binary, instead recognising that what has traditionally been pathologised, may instead be viewed as variations on human identity.
Book Synopsis Swedish Crime Fiction by : Kerstin Bergman
Download or read book Swedish Crime Fiction written by Kerstin Bergman and published by Mimesis. This book was released on 2014-05-26T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have authors from the safe, social welfare state Sweden captivated the minds of the crime fiction readers across the globe? Kerstin Bergman suggests that killer marketing and a widespread curiosityabout the “exotic” Nordic welfare states, their waste landscapes and alleged gender equality, has propelled these authors and novels into the international spotlight. Bergman uses this innovative angle to retell the recent history of crime fiction in Sweden, exploring central themes and selecting key authors that have garnered national and international acclaim for their lethal plots. Swedish Crime Fiction: The Making of Nordic Noir contextualizes the explosive recent history of the genre, offering newcomers and aficionados insights into the minds of protagonists and their literary creators. This is the first research-based and exhaustive presentation of Swedish crime fiction and its Nordic “neighbours” to an international audience.
Book Synopsis Swedish Marxist Noir by : Per Hellgren
Download or read book Swedish Marxist Noir written by Per Hellgren and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marxist theories have had a profound influence on crime fiction, beginning with the works of the American writers of the 1930s. This study explores the development of a Swedish Marxist noir subgenre after the 1990s through a Marxist reading of central works, from the Marlowe novels of Raymond Chandler to the 1960s social crime fiction of Sjowall-Wahloo to modern bestselling authors such as Henning Mankell, Stieg Larsson, Roslund & Hellstrom, Jens Lapidus, Arne Dahl and others. The works of these writers show a common thread of Marxist worldview in their portrayal of a modern world gone wrong.
Book Synopsis Rape Cultures and Survivors by : Tuba Inal
Download or read book Rape Cultures and Survivors written by Tuba Inal and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth treatment in two volumes of the historical and cultural contexts of rape and rape culture, this set discusses both victims and perpetrators internationally during war and peace times and examines the treatment of survivors. Historically, women, men, and children have all suffered sexual violence, during wartime and peacetime as well as inside and outside their homes. This two-volume title focuses on survivors of rape in a variety of social and cultural contexts. It examines different people who are victimized in a variety of situations (including in war and prisons) and studies the particularities of "rape cultures" that are intertwined with ethnic cultures and hatreds and other forms of conflictual social, political, and economic relations. In the introduction, the editors define rape and rape culture and provide historical and cultural context for the information presented throughout the volumes, the first of which primarily focuses on the causes and manifestations of rape cultures; the second considers the consequences of rape cultures for survivors of sexual assault. In both volumes, contributors provide case studies elucidating the experiences of a variety of victims—young, old, male, female, straight, and LGBT—in diverse locations around the world to help readers understand how truly pervasive and portentous rape culture is.

Download or read book Hype written by Jon Helgason and published by Nordic Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of books and literature, “hype” is associated with bestsellerism - the books that sell the most, are read by vast numbers, and constantly talked about in media and staff rooms. Often, it is the success in itself that generates an interest because popularity begets popularity. Quite often though, a hyped bestseller is met with a skeptic criticism of poor language, a badly constructed plot, a predictable story line, or all three. The bestseller phenomenon is sometimes conceived as a threat against “real” literature. Research into the creation, reception, and meaning of bestsellers is utterly scarce and Hype: Bestsellers and Literary Culture is an important contribution to the understanding of the literature read by the masses. Popular literature plays an important role in the lives of millions of readers, offering entertainment, social commentary, and alternate perspectives on everyday life. This volume brings together such diverse issues as the creation of hype, the role and the meaning of the author in the present-day media landscape, changes in the book trade, and the relationship between bestsellers and research into them. Further articles give an historical overview on postapocalyptic stories, desert romances and the role of the authors. This book offers new knowledge on a subject that is increasingly popular within university curricula. Although the anthology is a work of academic research the texts are of equal interest to general readers.

Book Synopsis Women and Crime in Post-Transitional South African Crime Fiction by : Sabine Binder
Download or read book Women and Crime in Post-Transitional South African Crime Fiction written by Sabine Binder and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking study, Sabine Binder analyses the complex ways in which female crime fictional victims, detectives and perpetrators in South African crime fiction resonate with widespread and persistent real crimes against women in post-apartheid South Africa. Drawing on a wide range of crime novels written over the last decade, Binder emphasises the genre’s feminist potential and critically maps its political work at the intersection of gender and race. Her study challenges the perception of crime fiction as a trivial genre and shows how, in South Africa at least, it provides a vibrant platform for social, cultural and ethical debates, exposing violence, misogyny and racism and shedding light on the problematics of law and justice for women faced with crime.

Book Synopsis Detecting the Social by : Mary Evans
Download or read book Detecting the Social written by Mary Evans and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the ways in which twenty-first century detective fiction provides an understanding of the increasingly complex and often baffling contemporary world — and what sociology, as a discipline, can learn from it. Conventional sociological accounts of fiction generally comprehend its value in terms of the ways in which it can illustrate, enlarge or help to articulate a particular social theory. Evans, Moore, and Johnstone suggest a different approach, and demonstrate that by taking a group of detective novels, we can unveil so far unidentified, but crucial, theoretical ideas about what it means to be an individual in the twenty-first century. More specifically, the authors argue that detective fiction of the last forty years illuminates the effects of urban isolation and separation, the invisibility of institutional power, financial insecurity, and the failure of public authorities to protect people. In doing so, this body of fiction traces out the fault-lines in our social arrangements, rehearses our collective fears, and captures a mood of restless disquiet. By engaging with detective stories in this way, the book revisits ideas about the promise and purpose of sociology.
Book Synopsis Capitalism, Crime and Media in the 21st Century by : Neil Ewen
Download or read book Capitalism, Crime and Media in the 21st Century written by Neil Ewen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection from leading scholars in the fields of media, communications, cultural studies and a number of aligned areas looks to the intersection of capitalism, crime and the media. The text is founded on the principles of cultural criminology – that how we determine and understand crime lies in the social world and that the determination of crime and its mediation in popular culture have a political basis. The book consists of eleven chapters and is divided into three sections. Section one considers the intersection of crime and capitalism in a range of contemporary cultural texts. Section two examines how various power systems influence the operation of the media in its role of reporting crime and holding the powerful to account. Section three considers how texts in a variety of formats are used to conduct politics, communicate politics and enact political decision making.
