Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the engrossing story of the unsung heroes who did the day-to-day work of building Arizona's dams, focusing on the lives of laborers and their families who created temporary construction communities during the building of seven major dams in central Arizona. The book focuses primarily on the 1903-1911 Roosevelt Dam camps and the 1926-1927 Camp Pleasant at Waddell Dam, although other camps dating from the 1890s through the 1940s are discussed as well. The book is liberally illustrated with historic photographs of the camps and the people who occupied them while building the dams.

Book excerpt: At 5:48 p.m., on March 18, 1911, former president Theodore Roosevelt pushed the button allowing the first waters to be released from the worlds highest masonry dam. The dam was one of the first projects authorized under the Newland Reclamation Act of 1902. The act provided federal money for state reclamation projects and established the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which, between 1902 and 1907, began 30 projects within 11 western states. The confident promoters of the Roosevelt Dam began developing the project at the confluence of Tonto Creek and the Salt River five months before receiving formal approval by the newly established bureau in 1903. As a result of a 1992 expansion and renovation project, todays dam stands 357 feet high and bears little resemblance to the dam dedicated by Theodore Roosevelt.
Book Synopsis Dam Internationalism by : Vincent Lagendijk
Download or read book Dam Internationalism written by Vincent Lagendijk and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 20th century dam-building became a truly global endeavour. Built around the world, they generated networks of actors, institutions and companies embedded in globally circulating technological knowledge and discourses of modernization and development. This volume takes a global approach to the history of dams, exploring the complex power relations and internationalist entanglements that shaped them. Shedding new light on the globalization of technology and international power struggles that defined the 20th century, Dam Internationalism shows that dams are artefacts in their own right and have created new and revisionist histories that urge us to rethink classic narratives. From international cooperation, to the importance of the Cold War and the capitalist/socialist divide, the success of western technology, the prominence of the United States, the alleged impotence of people affected by dams, and the uniformity of infrastructure. Each chapter showcases a different case study from Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America to show that dams enabled marginalized countries and actors to articulate themselves and pursue their own political and socio-economic goals in a century dominated by the Global North.

Book excerpt: This book is organized unlike other books about rivers. Even the Table of Contents looks different. Rivers are interrelated into the lives of people and wildlife. Historical events are related to other events and many kinds of activities affected more than one river. For these reasons, the book is organized into history chapters alternating with chapters about specific rivers. The history chapters contain information needed to understand impacts on the rivers. They are not intended as a thorough history of the state. The river chapters contain information specific to each river, with frequent references to the history chapters for information common to several rivers. Short feature sections contain information on specific common topics. We have attempted to avoid technical terms, but those that are used are defined in the glossary. Similarly, we have used common names for plants and animals. Readers interested in the scientific names will find those in a special section of the glossary.
