Book excerpt: This study sought to examine the relationship between racial identity attitudes and the mastery of developmental tasks of African-American students at predominantly White colleges. The research hypotheses were as follows: (H1) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Pre-encounter stage attitudes will be less likely to report mastery of the developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. (H2) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Encounter and Internalization stage attitudes will be more likely to report the mastery of the developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. (H3) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Immersion stage attitudes will be less likely to report mastery of developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. The author used two theoretical models: the Theory Racial Identity Development, Cross (1971) and Chickering's (1969) Theory of Psychosocial Development. To operationalize both theories, the Racial Identity Attitudes Scale, Parham and Helms (1981) was used to measure racial identity attitudes and the Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Inventory was used to measure student development (Winston, Miller, and Prince, 1987). The sample consisted of 119 African-American college students who were members of the Black Student unions at three predominantly White public colleges. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to determine the relationship between personal background characteristics, the racial identity attitudes and student developmental tasks. Pre-encounter (anti-Black) and Immersion (pro-Black) stage attitudes were less likely to report the mastery of the tasks associated with mature interpersonal relationships. Students with Encounter (pro-Black) stage attitudes were more likely to report the mastery of the Establishing and Clarifying Purpose task and Salubrious Lifestyle. Personal background characteristics showed the strongest effects. For Mature Interpersonal Relationships tasks, the strongest effects were class level and gender. Females were more likely to report the mastery of the Mature Interpersonal Relationships task. Four effects were stronger when Salubrious Lifestyle was examined. These were gender (males were likely to report the mastery of the Salubrious Lifestyle task while in college), income level, the percentage of Blacks in one's high school at the time of graduation, and the predominant race of teachers at the time of graduation. The findings of this study have implications for student affairs professionals such as counselors and residence life staff.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to determine how racial identity of African American college students can impact their ability to assimilate on predominately White college campuses to the point of hindering their retention. This study was a sequential explanatory mixed method study. Phase one of the study was a quantitative survey consisting of 25 questions that was completed by N=125 African American students attending a Predominately White University in the Mid-West. Phase two of the study was a convenience sample of thirteen African American students living on and off campus. The following research questions were addressed to explore the research topic. (1) How does racial identity impact African American college students' ability to assimilate at a predominately White university with a high enrollment of African American college students? (2) How do African American college students perceive their college/university's commitment to them? (3) How do African American college students perceive their racial identity impacting their lives? The findings of the study showed that the complexities of racism and stereotypical perceptions made the process of assimilating into the college environment holistic, including social, academic, internal and external variables that impacted their ability to assimilate and form relationships needed to have a well-rounded college experience. However, many of the students interviewed felt some of the stereotypical perceptions are sometimes perpetuated by the actions of their Black peers. During a few of the interviews, students (N=7) described their dismay with the behavior that some of their peers exhibited. The participants that were interviewed felt that the students' success should be a shared responsibility. It should be up to the students to be accountable; one participant stated "too often people want to blame others for things that happen to them." Furthermore, he explained that he takes full responsibility for the 2.0 grade point he had at the end of the last semester, but he is now looking at a 3.2 for this semester. Many of the students expressed that they did feel the faculty and staff ratio could be more representative of the African American population. The students also felt the administration could do more to bring the students together as a whole, the students of color and the White students. The consensus of the interviews was that Black people as a whole, in the eyes of the boarder society, are not respected nor looked at as assets. Many of the students interviewed felt that if the Black students and the White students had more opportunities to engage outside of the classroom, they may see Blacks beyond the stereotypical perceptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The data behind a distinct form of racism in online dating The Dating Divide is the first comprehensive look at "digital-sexual racism," a distinct form of racism that is mediated and amplified through the impersonal and anonymous context of online dating. Drawing on large-scale behavioral data from a mainstream dating website, extensive archival research, and more than seventy-five in-depth interviews with daters of diverse racial backgrounds and sexual identities, Curington, Lundquist, and Lin illustrate how the seemingly open space of the internet interacts with the loss of social inhibition in cyberspace contexts, fostering openly expressed forms of sexual racism that are rarely exposed in face-to-face encounters. The Dating Divide is a fascinating look at how a contemporary conflux of individualization, consumerism, and the proliferation of digital technologies has given rise to a unique form of gendered racism in the era of swiping right—or left. The internet is often heralded as an equalizer, a seemingly level playing field, but the digital world also acts as an extension of and platform for the insidious prejudices and divisive impulses that affect social politics in the "real" world. Shedding light on how every click, swipe, or message can be linked to the history of racism and courtship in the United States, this compelling study uses data to show the racial biases at play in digital dating spaces.
Book Synopsis Racial Color-blindness and Interracial Relationship Outcomes by : Rubyna Abbey
Download or read book Racial Color-blindness and Interracial Relationship Outcomes written by Rubyna Abbey and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the rapid and steady increase in African American-White interracial relationships since 1967, it is imperative to conduct research examining factors that influence relationship outcomes within interracial relationships. The current study examined main effects of African American partner and White partner color-blind racial attitudes, as well as their interaction, in predicting relationship outcomes (i.e., relationship satisfaction and perceived support) from the perspective of African Americans involved in African American-White, heterosexual, interracial relationships. In addition, the links between color-blind racial attitudes and racial identity status were examined. Participants were 62 African American-White, heterosexual, interracial dyads. Contrary to expectation, results indicated that the main effect of White partner color-blind racial attitudes was not significant in predicting African American partner relationship outcomes. Instead, African American partners' color-blind racial attitudes were positively associated with African American partner relationship satisfaction and African American partner perceived support in his or her White partner. Also contrary to expectation, no significant interaction emerged between White partner color-blind racial attitudes and African American partner color-blind racial attitudes in predicting neither African American relationship satisfaction nor perceived support. Correlation analyses of color-blind racial attitudes and racial identity statuses among African Americans revealed that Pre-Encounter Assimilation and Pre-Encounter Miseducation, as expected, were positively associated with unawareness of racial privilege, unawareness of institutional discrimination, and unawareness of blatant racial issues. Contrary to expectation, no significant correlations were found between more resolved racial identity statuses and color-blind racial attitudes for African American participants. Among White participants, consistent with expectation, a positive correlation was found between Disintegration and unawareness of blatant racial issues; however, the Reintegration status was not significantly correlated with White color-blind racial attitudes. Contrary to expectation, Contact status was positively related to unawareness of racial privilege and unawareness of blatant racial issues. A detailed discussion of the findings, suggestions for future research, and clinical implications are presented.
Book Synopsis A Mixed Methods Examination of Race and Ethnic Identity in College Students by : Charisse B. Pickron
Download or read book A Mixed Methods Examination of Race and Ethnic Identity in College Students written by Charisse B. Pickron and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study compares the salience of ethnic and racial identities across social situations and levels of self-esteem between monoracial majority, monoracial minority and multiracial college students. I utilized mixed methods, including quantitative measures of ethnic identity, racial and ethnic identity salience and self-esteem and qualitative of in-depth interviews. Participants consisted of a racially and ethnically diverse pool of 216 male and female college students from schools across the country. Recruiting occurred via email to cultural organizations at Mount Holyoke College and other colleges and universities across the country. A representative sample of 14 students participated in the qualitative interviews. Using several one-way analyses of variances to determine differences between means within each measure the present study found that monoracial majority students racial and ethnic identities are less salient than those of monoracial minority and multiracial college students. Additionally, self-esteem did not significantly differ across the three racial and ethnic groups. This study contributes to the understanding of how college students across racial and ethnic groups manage their racial and ethnic identities. Furthermore, it provides new evidence concerning the differences in levels of self-esteem across racial and ethnic groups.
