Many are the differences which separate and distinguish one group of men from another, but, on the other hand, many are the agreements or likenesses which unite them to one another, and make them different from all other living creatures. All men speak and talk. They all call some acts 'good' and others 'bad.' They all have something which we call reason, mind, intelligence - of a different kind apparently, and leading undoubtedly to very different results, from the intelligence even of the elephant and the dog; they all have, as we believe, what we call spirits or souls. They all (so the learned, I think, declare) have some sort of what we call religion. And we believe that, through their souls, spirits, reason, they are all united in some special way to God. Only man, says the Bible, was created in the divine image; but all men and women were so created; not only white men, but also black men; not only 'civilized' men, but also 'savages'; not only the wise, but also the ignorant; shall we add, too, not only the 'good' but also the 'bad?' It is a curious fact, however, that the very things which, in one sense, unite all men together, and separate them, and make them different, from animals, also separate them from one another. The reason is, I suppose, that there are differences in the likenesses. Though all men speak some language, there are very many different languages. Though all men call some things 'good' and some things 'bad,' they do not all call the same things good or bad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jews: A Study of Race and Environment This volume is an attempt to present the results of anthropo logical, demographic, pathological, and sociological investiga tions of the Jews. Considering that one-fifth of all the Jews in the world live at present in English-speaking countries, and that the migrations of Eastern European Jews tend toivard the United States and England with its colonies, I believe I need not apologize for claiming attention to this subject. The facts presented are not available in any book, and it may safely be declared that the whole world is interested in the subject of the Jews as a race, and the getting into closer touch with the ethnic relations of the Jews. Moreover, the perennial problem, whether it is possible to assimilate the vast number of Southern and Eastern immigrants to the United States and British colonies has been applied more to the Jews than to any other white people. It has even been questioned whether there is ever a probability of incorporating the Jews into the body politic of anglo-saxon communities. There is indeed no official reason, that I wot of, for this divine preference but perhaps the maledictions that have followed the race ever since, have something to do with the forbearance with which other nations have treated this extraordinary favouritism. It has even been questioned whether there is ever a probability of incorporating the Jews into the body politic of Anglo-Saxon communities. That anthropology only is competent to answer this question is agreed. Yet there is no book in English treating of the race traits of the Jews. The literature on the subject in English consists mostly of investigations by special parliamentary commissions, containing opinions of statesmen, social workers, educators, etc. It appears that the prevailing opinion is that the Jews, alleged to have maintained themselves in absolute racial purity for three or four thousand years, may prove hard to assimilate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Jewish Nation: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The history of no nation is so intimately connected with the welfare of the whole human race as that of the Jews. Immanuel was a Jew, and for this reason, if for no other, mankind would have an interest in tracing the narrative of the race to which that mighty Personage belonged. The Jews are the people of promise, to whom the Divine Word stands pledged, in a sense which is true of no other nation ality. They stand nearer to God, in certain respects, than any other people. The Jews are the people of prophecy. The things foretold concerning them in one age are fulfilled in another. Prophecy and its fulfillment are in them joined closely together. History, within a certain limited range, exists and is written for their sakes. In their gradually developing history, the word of Jehovah stands, as it were, on trial; and the reverent mind takes the deepest interest in inquiring what is the issue of this test. Is the Divine word, in the gradual unfolding of the ages, fulfilled? And he who worthily sets forth the materials for the answering of this question, does a service to theology, to learning, to history, and to every curious inquirer. God made promises to the Hebrew nation from the days of Abraham till the close of the Old Testament Scripture. He threatened evil to them as the fmit of rebellion and sin. Have the good things promised, and has the evil threatened come to the nation in alternating succession, in proportion to their varying deserts? The Jews who lived in the times of the incarnation of Christ imprecated curses upon themselves and their children for the share they chose to take in compassing the death of the Son of God. Has the curse rested upon the people? Do they feel, in their present separation from the nations of the earth, in the lack of respect with which they are, as a general rule, regarded, in the cruel persecutions which have been visited upon them, and in their stubborn blindness to the light of the Gospel, the awful cfiect of Divine displeasure These questions, as they are continuously solved by history, hold an important relation to the theology of the world. While the Divine omni presence is a truth universally conceded, and which needs no argument, we find in the Jewish nation and its history, the most convincing illustration of that doctrine. In the Jewish history God stands forth before men, an acknowledged, a present God, a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generations of them that hate him. If other histories are so written as to seem like events without a God, the Jewish history is a history with God every where embodied, and everywhere apparent. The history of the Jewish people is a commentary on the Divine faithfulness and veracity, and in it God brings himself very near to men. How can we explain their dramatic economic ascent? Have Jews been successful because of cultural factors distinct to them as a group, or because of the particular circumstances that they encountered in America? The Rag Race argues that the Jews who flocked to the United States during the age of mass migration were aided appreciably by their association with a particular corner of the American economy: the rag trade. From humble beginnings, Jews rode the coattails of the clothing trade from the margins of economic life to a position of unusual promise and prominence, shaping both their societal status and the clothing industry as a whole. Comparing the history of Jewish participation within the clothing trade in the United States with that of Jews in the same business in England, The Rag Race demonstrates that differences within the garment industry on either side of the Atlantic contributed to a very real divergence in social and economic outcomes for Jews in each setting.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1911, Jews, Race, and Environment presents the resultsof anthropological, demographic, pathological, and sociological investigationsof people who identify themselves as Jews. At the time Fishberg wrote thisbook, there was widespread interest in the idea of Jews as a race and in theethnic relationship of Jews to each other. The early twentieth century was aperiod of heavy Eastern European immigration to the United States. Manyquestioned if it were possible for Jews to assimilate into American culture, particularly into what was termed the body politic of Anglo-Saxoncommunities. Fishberg addresses these questions in this classic study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jews of to-Day There is even a certain scientific interest about investigations into Jewish phenomena. Thus the question about the purity of the Jewish race, on which so much has been written of recent years, has a direct bearing on the opposition noticed by the late Sir Francis Galton, between the nature and the nurture of men. In other words, does birth or training deter mine human characteristics? The Jews throw light upon this subject whether they are a distinctive race or not. If they are, their common Characteristics shown in such different parts of the world is evidence of the influence of breed or nature. If they are not, the same characteristics prove the influence of nurture, education or environment. Jewish characteristics have even been made the subject of discussion in the struggle now going on between the Mendelians and the Biometricians. The former assert, the latter deny, that Jewish features are hereditable in mixed marriages, according to the Mendelian Law. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Nation: Containing an Account of Their Manners and Customs, Rites and Worship, Laws and Polity The manners and customs of the ancient Jews, and other nations mentioned in the Bible, differed very much from those of Europe and America at the present time. On this account it is not easy for a modern reader to understand some passages of Scripture. Hence many things in the Bible seem very strange to those who do not know the man ner in which people in the East lived in former times. Nor do the beauty and importance of many texts appear, unless what is alluded to in them is known. The eastern manners and customs of old times may be explained from two sources -1. From the ancient writers Of other nations, who have described the customs of former times. Their works contain many passages which confirm the accounts given in the Bible, and nothing which really contradicts them when carefully examined. Learned men have clearly proved this. Nor should we forget, that a great part of the Old Testament was written many hundred years before any other book now in existence - 2. Much also may be learned from modern travelers, who have vi sited the places mentioned in the Bible, and other countries of the East. People live there now very much in the same manner as they did in the times about which we read in the Bible, which were from two to six thousand years ago. The books of eastern travelers now are full of such state ments; many are given in this volume, but they are only a small part of what might have been stated. Perhaps some travelers have gone too far, and mention as illustrations of the Bible what are not really such. Also the rites and ceremonies of the Jewish religion are too often carelessly passed by, from ignorance as to many of the particulars, which are very interesting when explained by the customs of the ancient Jews, or by the accounts of their own writers who lived about the time of our Saviour. The laws and polity, or the political institutions of the Jews, contain much that is very important to be known, but which is not noticed by common readers; here, also, a knowledge of the manners and customs is of much use. All these things will be found interesting when inquired into. The design of this volume is to induce the reader so to study his Bible; and all who read it should examine the texts noticed. It would have been easy to refer to a great many other texts, but most who read this book can look at a Concordance, or, if young persons, it is a good exercise to examine for themselves, and thus to be led to search the Scriptures. For this reason, as well as to save space, the texts are seldom given at great length in this volume. If that had been done, the book would have been doubled in size and cost, without any advantage in return; while any plan that prevents the examining of the Whole Bible is by no means desirable. Consider the years of many generations: Ask thy father, and he will shew thee; Thine elders, and they will tell thee." Deut. xxxii.7. "Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen." - Isaiah xliii. 10. "The life of man is numbered by days: The days of Israel are without number." Ecclus. xxxvii. 25. "Kingdoms arise and kingdoms pass away, but Israel endureth for evermore." - Midrash. "Man is made man by history. The Jew recognizes that he is made what he is by the history of his fathers, and feels he is losing his better self so far as he loses his hold on his past history. "The history of Israel is the great living proof of the working of Divine Providence in the affairs of the world. Alone among the nations Israel has shared in all great movements since mankind became conscious of their destinies. If there is no Divine purpose in the long travail of Israel, it is vain to seek for any such purpose in man's life. In the reflected light of that purpose each Jew should lead his life with an added dignity." - Joseph Jacobs.
