Book excerpt: The ability to control the state of magnetic systems through electronic means is a promising challenge to those in the field of electronics and nanotechnology. The magnetoelectric effect, first predicted in 1894, is a coupling between the magnetization of a material and an electric field or the polarization of a material and a magnetic field. A lot of progress has been made since its discovery but a limited microscopic understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved, and a general weakness of the effect, makes the search for and study of these systems difficult. Recent studies have focused on considering such behaviour in low-dimensional materials or molecules. The small size and tunability of these systems makes them a worthwhile testing ground to push the limits of scale and functionality for technical applications. First-principle calculations using density functional theory (DFT) provides a computationally efficient method to characterize the ground state properties of potential magnetoelectric materials and allows the building of models that could potentially anticipate the presence and strength of the effect. In this work, we use these methods to study low-dimensional magnetic systems, one a quasi-1D molecular crystal and later, a set of single-molecule magnets.

Over the last four decades, the size of a bit, the smallest logical unit in a computer, has decreased by more than two orders of magnitude and will soon reach a limit where quantum phenomena become important. Inspired by the power of quantum mechanics, researchers have already identified pure quantum systems, having, analog to a classical bit, two controllable and readable states. In this regard, the inherent spin of electrons or nuclei with its two eigenstates, spin up and spin down, is a promising candidate. Using expertise in the field of single-molecule magnets, the author developed a molecular transistor, which allows quantum information to be written onto a single nuclear spin by means of an electric field only, and, in addition, enables the electronic read-out of this quantum state. This novel approach opens a path to addressing and manipulating individual nuclear spins within a very confined space (a single molecule), at high speed. Thus, the author was able to show that single molecule magnets are promising candidates for quantum information processing, which is triggering a new field of research towards molecular quantum electronics.

Book excerpt: The synthesis and study of magnetic nanostructures is of both intense scientific and technological interest. A single-molecule magnet (SMM) is a molecular nanomagnet that can be magnetized as a result of having a large spin ground state that experiences appreciable magnetoanisotropy, which leads to a thermodynamic barrier between "spin-up" and "spin-down" orientations. The monodisperse nature (same size, shape and anisotropy) of SMMs permits detailed studies of the magnetization and quantum dynamics of nanomagnets. The discovery of SMMs permitted, for the first time, detailed study of quantum effects associated with nanomagnets. The magnetic and quantum properties of these complexes is heavily dictated by molecular and crystal symmetry, and paramount to employing these systems as devices is a need to thoroughly understand and control environmental factors that govern their magnetization and quantum dynamics. To some extent this can be achieved by changing or eliminating co-crystallized solvate molecules and interchanging coordinated peripheral ligands. Magnetic and thermodynamic studies were carried out on a high symmetry system that exhibits a large spin ground state (S =51/2), a preferred orientation in an applied magnetic field, and slow magnetization relaxation dynamics. Strong competing magnetic exchange coupling between paramagnetic copper and manganese ions, in conjunction with high symmetry, gives rise to appreciable spin-frustration and geometric-frustration. These correlated effects lead to slow magnetization relaxation behavior. Detailed magnetization and thermodynamic studies were performed on a series of tetranuclear nickel complexes that exhibit fast magnetization tunneling and magnetic ordering. Magnetic ordering is a collective process that should drastically suppress or terminate quantum tunneling processes. It is revealed that even in an ordered state, the molecules within the crystal lattice act as single domains, thus, molecules quickly switch between magnetic ordering and single-domain quantum tunneling. A series/family of multifunctional tetranuclear manganese SMMs (magnetic and photoluminescent) were synthesized that systematically differ in co-crystallized solvate molecules and peripheral organic ligands to study magneto-structural correlation effects and quantum tunneling of magnetization. The goal is to couple emissive excited states to the magnetic moment of the SMM, which may allow, for the first time, detailed study of quantum dynamics on a 10−9-10−12s time scale.

Book excerpt: Molecular magnets show many properties not met in conventional metallic magnetic materials, i.e. low density, transparency to electromagnetic radiation, sensitivity to external stimuli such as light, pressure, temperature, chemical modification or magnetic/electric fields, and others. They can serve as “functional” materials in sensors of different types or be applied in high-density magnetic storage or nanoscale devices. Research into molecule-based materials became more intense at the end of the 20th century and is now an important branch of modern science. The articles in this Special Issue, written by physicists and chemists, reflect the current work on molecular magnets being carried out in several research centers. Theoretical papers in the issue concern the influence of spin anisotropy in the low dimensional lattice of the resulting type of magnet, as well as thermodynamics and magnetic excitations in spin trimers. The impact of external pressure on structural and magnetic properties and its underlying mechanisms is described using the example of Prussian blue analogue data. The other functionality discussed is the magnetocaloric effect, investigated in coordination polymers and high spin clusters. In this issue, new molecular magnets are presented: (i) ferromagnetic high-spin [Mn6] single-molecule magnets, (ii) solvatomagnetic compounds changing their structure and magnetism dependent on water content, and (iii) a family of purely organic magnetic materials.
