Shapiro edited the book entitled Ultrashort Light Pulses (Topics Appl. Phys., Vol. 18), which was written by eight experts in the field. Six years later, Charles V. Shank added a bibliography (1980-1983) in the second edition with approximately one thousand new references. During the past decade the field has grown so rapidly that a completely new book had to be written. In particular, the reduction of the time scale of light pulses into the femtosecond range has opened up new experimental possibilities never even foreseen in the preceding literature. The vast literature with countless ideas and applications makes it impossible for a single person to write a comprehensive review. Nine scientists, actively working in the field since its beginning, have decided to join forces to prepare a new book describing the present state of the art. Emphasis is placed on the generation and numerous applications of ultrashort laser pulses. This book covers a wide area of science: physics, engineering, chemistry, and biology. The various chapters and sections are prepared in each case such that the reader is given a brief introduction to the specific subject. Ample references for a more detailed study are given at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: This book attempts to give a discussion of the physics and current and potential applications of the self-focusing of an intense femtosecond laser pulse in a tra- parent medium. Although self-focusing is an old subject of nonlinear optics, the consequence of self-focusing of intense femtosecond laser pulses is totally new and unexpected. Thus, new phenomena are observed, such as long range lam- tation, intensity clamping, white light laser pulse, self-spatial ltering, self-group phase locking, self-pulse compression, clean nonlinear uorescence, and so on. Long range propagation at high intensity, which is seemingly against the law of diffraction, is probably one of the most exciting consequences of this new sub- eld of nonlinear optics. Because the intensity inside the lament core is high, new ways of doing nonlinear optics inside the lament become possible. We call this lamentation nonlinear optics. We shall describe the generation of pulses at other wavelengths in the visible and ultraviolet (UV) starting from the near infrared pump pulse at 800 nm through four-wave-mixing and third harmonic generation, all in gases. Remotely sensing uorescence from the fragments of chemical and biological agents in all forms, gaseous, aerosol or solid, inside the laments in air is demonstrated in the labo- tory. The results will be shown in the last part of the book. Through analyzing the uorescence of gas molecules inside the lament, an unexpected physical process pertaining to the interaction of synchrotron radiation with molecules is observed.

Book excerpt: Soon after the invention of the laser, a brand-new area of endeavour emerged after the discovery that powerful ultrashort (picosecond) light pulses could be extracted from some lasers. Chemists, physicists, and engineers quickly recognized that such pulses would allow direct temporal studies of extremely rapid phenomena requiring, however, development of revolutionary ultrafast optical and electronic devices. For basic research the development of picosecond pulses was highly important because experimentalists were now able to measure directly the motions of atoms and molecules in liquids and solids: by disrupting a material from equilibrium with an intense picosecond pulse and then recording the time of return to the equilibrium state by picosecond techniques. Studies of picosecond laser pulses-their generation and diagnostic tech niques-are still undergoing a fairly rapid expansion, but a critical review of the state of the art by experienced workers in the field may be a timely help to new experimentalists. We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.

However this broadband content is subject to dispersion and hence the pulse duration of corresponding ultrashort pulses may be stretched accordingly. I used a commercially-available adaptive ultrashort pulse shaper featuring multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan technology to characterise and compensate for the dispersion of the optical system in situ and conducted experimental and theoretical studies in various inter-linked topics relating to the light-matter interaction. Firstly, I examined the role of broadband ultrashort pulses in novel light-matter interacting systems involving optically co-trapped particle systems in which inter-particle light scattering occurs between optically-bound particles. Secondly, I delivered dispersion-compensated broadband ultrashort pulses in a dispersive microscope system to investigate the role of pulse duration in a biological light-matter interaction involving laser-induced cell membrane permeabilisation through linear and nonlinear optical absorption. Finally, I examined some of the propagation characteristics of broadband ultrashort pulse propagation using a computer-controlled spatial light modulator. The propagation characteristics of ultrashort pulses is of paramount importance for defining the light-matter interaction in systems. The ability to control ultrashort pulse propagation by using adaptive dispersion compensation enables chirp-free ultrashort pulses to be used in experiments requiring the shortest possible pulses for a specified spectral bandwidth. Ultrashort pulsed beams may be configured to provide high peak intensities over long propagation lengths, for example, using novel beam shapes such as Bessel-type beams, which has applications in biological light-matter interactions including phototransfection based on laser-induced cell membrane permeabilisation. The need for precise positioning of the beam focus on the cell membrane becomes less strenuous by virtue of the spatial properties of the Bessel beam. Dispersion compensation can be used to control the temporal properties of ultrashort pulses thus permitting, for example, a high peak intensity to be maintained along the length of a Bessel beam, thereby reducing the pulse energy required to permeabilise the cell membrane and potentially reduce damage therein.

Four years after pub- cation of the ?rst edition, femtosecond science has overcome new challenges and new application ?elds have become mature. It is necessary to take into account these new developments. Two main topics merged during this period that support important scienti?c activities: attosecond pulses are now gen- ated in the X-UV spectral domain, and coherent control of chemical events is now possible by tailoring the shape of femtosecond pulses. To update this advanced textbook, it was necessary to introduce these ?elds; two new ch- ters are in this second edition: “Coherent Control in Atoms, Molecules, and Solids”(Chap.11)and“AttosecondPulses”(Chap.12)withwell-documented references. Some changes, addenda, and new references are introduced in the ?rst edition’s ten original chapters to take into account new developments and updatethisadvancedtextbookwhichistheresultofascienti?cadventurethat started in 1991. At that time, the French Ministry of Education decided that, in view of the growing importance of ultrashort laser pulses for the national scienti?c community, a Femtosecond Centre should be created in France and devoted to the further education of scientists who use femtosecond pulses as a research tool and who are not specialists in lasers or even in optics.

Book excerpt: In this thesis I investigate two methods for generating ultrashort laser pulses in spectral regions which are ordinarily difficult to achieve by the existing techniques. These pulses are specially attractive in the study of ultrafast (few femtosecond) atomic and molecular dynamics. The first involves Optical Parametric Amplification (OPA) mediated by four-wave-mixing in gas and supports the generation of ultrashort pulses in the Near-InfraRed (NIR) to the Mid-InfraRed (MIR) spectral region. By combining pulses at a centre wavelength of 800 nm and their second harmonic in an argon-filled hollow-core fibre, we demonstrate near-infrared pulses, peaked at 1.4 μm, with 5 μJ energy and 45 fs duration at the fibre output. The four-wave-mixing process involved in the OPA is expected to lead carrier-envelope phase stable pulses which is of great importance for applications in extreme nonlinear optics. These NIR to MIR pulses can be used directly for nonlinear light-matter interactions making use of its long-wavelength characteristics. The second method allows the compression of intense femtosecond pulses in the ultraviolet (UV) region by sum-frequency mixing two bandwidth limited NIR pulses in a noncollinear phasematching geometry under particular conditions of group-velocity mismatch. Specifically, the crystal has to be chosen such that the group velocities of the NIR pump pulses, v1 and v2 , and of the sum-frequency generated pulse, vSF, meet the following condition, v1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Laser produced plasma provides a basis for many emerging technologies because it can interact with photons and charged particles in powerful and unique ways. These laser-plasma-based applications frequently rely on the controlled coupling of the laser pulse to the plasma to achieve the desired effects. Spatiotemporal (ST) pulse shaping, referring to the intentional correlation of the spatial and temporal characteristics of the laser pulse, can enhance control over the laser-plasma coupling improving the utility of laser-plasma-based applications. This work presents the basic theory of two ST shaping techniques, the chromatic flying focus (CFF) [D.H. Froula et al., "Spatiotemporal control of laser intensity" Nature Photonics 12, 262?265 (2018), D.H. Froula et al., "Flying focus: Spatial and temporal control of intensity for laser-based applications" Physics of Plasmas 26] and the ultrashort flying focus (UFF) ["Dephasingless Laser Wakefield Acceleration" Physical Review Letters 124, 134802 (2020)], and explores their applications experimentally and theoretically. Both techniques have at least three advantages in common: 1) laser pulse focusing is cylindrically symmetric, allowing high focused intensities to be reached, 2) the focal range is decoupled from the spot size, allowing high intensity to be maintained over long distances, and 3) the intensity peak velocity (focal velocity, v f) is decoupled from the laser group velocity, facilitating intensity peaks with tunable velocity. CFF pulses derived from the Multi-Terawatt laser at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics were used to drive ionization waves of arbitrary velocity (IWAVs) in air. These IWAVs, which are the moving interface between a neutral medium and an ionized plasma, moved at the focal velocity v f when driven by low energy pulses with uniform power spectra, agreeing with theoretical predictions. Focal velocity ranges shown computationally to mitigate ionization refraction were also confirmed [D. Turnbull et al., "Ionization Waves of Arbitrary Velocity" Physical Review Letters 120, 225001 (2018), J.P. Palastro et al., "Ionization waves of arbitrary velocity driven by a flying focus" Physical Review A 97, 033835 (2018)]. Later experiments demonstrated IWAVs of large diameter using defocused laser pulses in a gas jet. The non-uniform power spectrum of these higher energy pulses resulted in experimentally observable changes to the IWAV diameter and trajectory. An analytic theory predicting the IWAV trajectory and diameter for CFF pulses with non-uniform power spectra was developed, and broadly agreed with the experimental observations. This theory was used to propose the use of power spectrum shaping as a way to better tune the IWAV characteristics [P. Franke et al., "Measurement and control of large diameter ionization waves of arbitrary velocity" Optics Express 27, 31978?31988 (2019)]. Photon acceleration, describing the continual frequency increase accrued by a photon in a time decreasing refractive index gradient as a means to generate extreme ultraviolet light, is an application shown computationally to be advanced by the generation of IWAVs. A computational investigation of three photon acceleration schemes enable by IWAVs is presented. A new optical shock-enhanced self-photon acceleration regime was identified using a finite-difference time-domain computational model. This regime, which is characterized by rapid spectral broadening and temporal compression of the drive laser pulse, could generate isolated attosecond pulses in the extreme ultraviolet with high efficiency [A.J. Howard et al., "Photon Acceleration in a Flying Focus" Physical Review Letters 123, 124801 (2019), P. Franke et al., "Optical shock-enhanced self-photon acceleration" Physical Review A 104, 043520 (2021)]. An experimental platform was developed to measure the UFF, and prototype radial echelon optics were manufactured. The echelon optics were fabricated using vapor-deposition through a rotating mask, and were measured to be suitable for initial experiments. An automated scanning spectral interferometer was built and benchmarked, then used to make initial measurements of the UFF. The UFF was not explicitly demonstrated, but several experimental shortcomings were identified, illuminating a path toward an ultimate demonstration. A successful demonstration of the UFF will immediately enable a series of experiments planned to study dephasingless laser wakefield acceleration and related topics"--Pages xi-xiii
