Book Synopsis Tissue Changes in Puffers Exposed to Methoxychlor and Methyl Parathion by : Ronald Eisler
Download or read book Tissue Changes in Puffers Exposed to Methoxychlor and Methyl Parathion written by Ronald Eisler and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adult northern puffers were exposed for periods up to 45 days to either 30 parts per billion (ppb) of the organochloride insecticide methoxychlor, 20, 200 ppb of the organophosphorous insecticide methyl parathion, or to a combination of 15 ppb of methoxychlor and 10, 100 ppb of methyl parathion. These concentrations will produce approximately 5 percent mortality in 96 hours under the conditions of the experiment. Profiles were constructed on the effects of each insecticide on blood and tissue components. The visual patterns provided by these profiles suggest a means of identifying unfavorable environmental conditions before the appearence of obvious morphological or physiological changes.

Book Synopsis Marine Fishes of Florida by : David B. Snyder
Download or read book Marine Fishes of Florida written by David B. Snyder and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2016-06-12 with total page 995 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A highly useful and interesting reference for ichthyologists, recreational fish enthusiasts and those working in Florida waters . . . a worthy addition.” —Marine Biology Research The most comprehensive book about Florida’s marine fishes ever produced, Marine Fishes of Florida includes hundreds of photographs and descriptions of species you’ll encounter—plus many that are rare—when diving, snorkeling, kayaking, or fishing. Coverage includes both the Atlantic and Gulf coastline, from habitats near the shore to deeper waters. Fishes found in coastal rivers and other brackish waters are fully represented, as are offshore species that venture into Florida’s waters often enough to be called “occasional visitors.” David B. Snyder and George H. Burgess intertwine personal observations with results from research studies to provide accurate—often surprising—details. The result is a set of beautifully succinct identification descriptions coupled with information about each species’ natural history. From the largest sharks to the smallest cryptic gobies, from homely toadfishes to the spectacularly colored reef fishes, this book is certain to help you better understand the fish you’ve seen or hooked. Features of Marine Fishes of Florida include: Color photographs by leading marine photographers Differentiation of adult and juvenile forms Coverage of 133 fish families and hundreds of species Size and geographical range data Natural history and conservation notes Explanations of geologic history and current habitats “Entertaining and informative . . . I think this book will be a great addition to the library of any biologist, fisher, diver or student, and I strongly recommend this book to anyone wishing to expand their knowledge of Florida fishes.” —Environmental Biology of Fishes

Book Synopsis Freshwater Fish Distribution by : Tim M. Berra
Download or read book Freshwater Fish Distribution written by Tim M. Berra and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 29,000 species, fishes are the most diverse group of vertebrates on the planet. Of that number, more than 12,000 species are found in freshwater ecosystems, which occupy less than 1 percent of the Earth’s surface and contain only 2.4 percent of plant and animal species. But, on a hectare-for-hectare basis, freshwater ecosystems are richer in species than more extensive terrestrial and marine habitats. Examination of the distribution patterns of fishes in these fresh waters reveals much about continental movements and climate changes and has long been critical to biogeographical studies and research in ecology and evolution. Tim Berra’s seminal resource, Freshwater Fish Distribution, maps the 169 fish families that swim in fresh water around the world. Each family account includes the class, subclass, and order; a pronunciation guide to the family name; life cycle information; and interesting natural history facts. Each account is illustrated, many with historical nineteenth-century woodcuts. Now available in paperback, this heavily cited work in ichthyology and biogeography will serve as a reference for students, a research support for professors, and a helpful guide to tropical fish hobbyists and anglers.
