Book excerpt: A follow-up to the Nelson Mandela Foundation's 2002 national household survey of HIV/AIDS prevalence in South Africa, this 2005 report seeks to provide further understanding of the HIV pandemic. Using data that tested for HIV incidence rather than just using mortality statistics, this study looks at which socio-demographic groups are most vulnerab≤ whether new policies have been successful in fighting the disease; what exactly is being done by key players, such as the government, churches, and other civil society organizations; and how the spread of HIV can be reduced in South Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1994, the democratic government in South Africa has worked hard at improving the lives of the black majority, yet close to half the population lives in poverty, jobs are scarce, and the country is more unequal than ever. For millions, the colour of people's skin still decides their destiny. In his wide-ranging, incisive and provocative analysis, Hein Marais shows that although the legacies of apartheid and colonialism weigh heavy, many of the strategic choices made since the early 1990s have compounded those handicaps. Marais explains why those choices were made, where they went awry, and why South Africa's vaunted formations of the left -- old and new -- have failed to prevent or alter them. From the real reasons behind President Jacob Zuma's rise and the purging of his predecessor, Thabo Mbeki, to a devastating critique of the country's continuing AIDS crisis, its economic path and its approach to the rights and entitlements of citizens, South Africa Pushed to the Limit presents a riveting benchmark analysis of the incomplete journey beyond apartheid.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is widespread recognition of the urgency of addressing the problem of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) within the context of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (Hunter & Williamson 2000; Smart 2000; UNAIDS, UNICEF & USAID 2002). Many countries in the region, including South Africa, in collaboration with development agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), have outlined policy guidelines and identified models of intervention (Family Health International 2001; Kalemba 1998; Loening-Vosey & Wilson 2001; Schneider & Russell 2000; UNAIDS 2002; UNICEF 1999; USAID & the Synergy Project 2001; Wilson, Giese, Meintjies, Croke & Chamberlain 2002). As a result, a considerable number of programmes targeting OVC have been implemented in the past few years. However, there are very few which have been independently evaluated in order to establish sustainable best practice models, which can confidently be recommended for replication and scaling up to meet the rapidly growing need with regard to OVC.

Book excerpt: Taking a rights-based approach, this comprehensive study develops a conceptual framework and a definitive set of holistic indicators for monitoring the well-being of children in South Africa. Taking cues from the child-rights focus of the South African constitution, it is made clear that it is not just the state of the children that is important to measure, but also the contexts within which the children grow and develop. Providing practical tools for policy makers to assess the effectiveness of child-based policies and interventions, this practical work addresses a wide range of domains--child poverty, HIV and AIDS, education, mental health and disability, abuse and neglect, the justice system, and children affected by the worst forms of labor.
