The report provides information on what is happening on the ground and also the basic data required to develop 'models of best practice'. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Sociology - Gender Studies, grade: 2:2, National University of Science & Technology Zimbabwe (National University of Science and Technology), course: Masters Degree in Disaster Management, language: English, abstract: This study was carried out against the background of HIV/AIDS having caused an orphan care crisis in Zimbabwe, with the brunt of care falling on the elderly who are themselves weak and frail due to age and socio-economic challenges. This burden fell on mainly the grandmothers who have had to bear the burden of caring for large numbers of orphaned grandchildren, with little or no support from the surviving members of the extended family or other sections of the community and government. They faced a lot of challenges in their new care giving role which included lack of food, lack of money to pay for school fees for the orphans, etc, these challenges added on top of the health problems that the elderly caregivers were enduring with which were age related like BP, Back ache, Arthritis, diminished eye sight etc. Against this background the study sought to determine the major causes of orphanage care, to identify the major challenges faced by these elderly caregivers in taking care of the orphans, and also to establish the coping strategies used by these elderly caregivers in upbringing the orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) under their care. The study also determined the role played by Government and other stakeholders in assisting this group and also made recommendations of interventions that can help. This study would assist Government and other aid organisations in their planning, decision making and strategy formulation.
Book Synopsis The Development, Implementation and Evaluation of Interventions for the Care of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe by : Anna Strebel
Download or read book The Development, Implementation and Evaluation of Interventions for the Care of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe written by Anna Strebel and published by HSRC Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is widespread recognition of the urgency of addressing the problem of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) within the context of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (Hunter & Williamson 2000; Smart 2000; UNAIDS, UNICEF & USAID 2002). Many countries in the region, including South Africa, in collaboration with development agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), have outlined policy guidelines and identified models of intervention (Family Health International 2001; Kalemba 1998; Loening-Vosey & Wilson 2001; Schneider & Russell 2000; UNAIDS 2002; UNICEF 1999; USAID & the Synergy Project 2001; Wilson, Giese, Meintjies, Croke & Chamberlain 2002). As a result, a considerable number of programmes targeting OVC have been implemented in the past few years. However, there are very few which have been independently evaluated in order to establish sustainable best practice models, which can confidently be recommended for replication and scaling up to meet the rapidly growing need with regard to OVC.
