Mild cases of elevated blood pressure can be traced to a specific disease or conditions. These causes of secondary hypertension are classified into 7 groups and often can be cured by surgery or a special medication. The most common (approximately 80-85 %) type of blood pressure, Essential or Primary Hypertension, does not seem to be related to any other disease or condition. At present the cause of Essential Hypertension is unknown, although it appears to be related to heredity, body chemistry, diet and smoking. Essential Hypertension cannot be cured, however it can be controlled with diet modification and medication. (emc).
