Book excerpt: Lucinda Jackson, a harried scientist and business executive, sets off to make a break from her corporate decades and have an “extraordinary” retirement. She launches into a five-phase “Project Escape,” complete with a vision, goals, and a scorecard of success to deliver this next chapter. Soon, Jackson and her semi-reluctant husband of thirty years are off as volunteers to the government of the Pacific island country of Palau. But while Jackson got the girl out of the corporation, even the jolt of Palau can’t fully get the corporation out of the girl. As she struggles through self-examination around purpose, identity, ego, marriage, and parenthood after years of investing so much in career, Jackson gradually learns who she is again. Whether you’re thinking ahead to retirement or are already there, Project Escape provides an unvarnished but ultimately encouraging reference in navigating the “post-career” era.

Book excerpt: Usually teams play games. One team wins and the other loses. However, not all games are regarded as sports. There are other games in life and they also are played with teams. Teams are comprised of players, but not always. There are business, government, and ad hoc games. In this book, the General leads his team in two international thrillers, both with teams of players. There are also teams of teams. This means one team employs a team to compete against the other team. In this book, the team led by the General competes against a team represented as a Country. In this instance, the General’s team is composed of Matt, Ashley, Anna, and Sir Charles Bunday. .Matt is Dr. Matthew Miller, mathematics professor, as the chief strategist of team. He is brilliant. Ashley is Matt’s wife who is a perceptive professor, as is Anna. The General is Les Miller, an Army hero, who is a rich businessman who likes to help people. Sir Charles is the General’s war buddy and a member of the BSS. The team has solved many problems for the President of the U.S. In the first episode, the team is called upon to retrieve an English scientist names Prince Michael of England who is a scientist and graduate of Oxford. Michael is kidnapped by the Iranians to solve atomic defense problems. At least, that is what the Americans think. As it turns out, Matt and the General determine that the Iranians need someone to solve the pandemic problem for them. They badly need a vaccine. Through a process of intrigue and intelligence, the problem is solved through drone technology and the story ends well for the English and the Iranians. The team does not have a chance to rest before they are asked to obtain strategic information from China through a double agent. The spy’s cover is blown and the team has to extract the double agent with an ingenious escape through Russia. The President is impressed by the team and asked to help with his “Archive of Office.” The previous episodes covered in previous books are summarized. Enjoy the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Nobel Prize–winning economist tells the remarkable story of how the world has grown healthier, wealthier, but also more unequal over the past two and half centuries The world is a better place than it used to be. People are healthier, wealthier, and live longer. Yet the escapes from destitution by so many has left gaping inequalities between people and nations. In The Great Escape, Nobel Prize–winning economist Angus Deaton—one of the foremost experts on economic development and on poverty—tells the remarkable story of how, beginning 250 years ago, some parts of the world experienced sustained progress, opening up gaps and setting the stage for today's disproportionately unequal world. Deaton takes an in-depth look at the historical and ongoing patterns behind the health and wealth of nations, and addresses what needs to be done to help those left behind. Deaton describes vast innovations and wrenching setbacks: the successes of antibiotics, pest control, vaccinations, and clean water on the one hand, and disastrous famines and the HIV/AIDS epidemic on the other. He examines the United States, a nation that has prospered but is today experiencing slower growth and increasing inequality. He also considers how economic growth in India and China has improved the lives of more than a billion people. Deaton argues that international aid has been ineffective and even harmful. He suggests alternative efforts—including reforming incentives to drug companies and lifting trade restrictions—that will allow the developing world to bring about its own Great Escape. Demonstrating how changes in health and living standards have transformed our lives, The Great Escape is a powerful guide to addressing the well-being of all nations.

Book excerpt: Much less well known is the fact that, up until 1979, Negri was a university professor teaching in Paris and Padua. On 7 April 1979 he was arrested, charged with the murder of Italian politician Aldo Moro, accused of seventeen other murders, of being the head of the Red Brigades and of fomenting insurrection against the state. He has since been absolved of all these accusations, but, thanks to the emergency laws in Italy at the title, he was sentenced to thirty years in prison. Then, in July 1983, he was elected as a member of parliament, which meant that he was released from prison after four and a half years of preventive detention. After months of debate, the Lower House decided to strip him of his parliamentary immunity - by 300 votes in favour and 293 against. At that point he left Italy for exile in France where he remained until 1997 and continued to maintain his innocence of all the crimes of which he was accused.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of nuclear weapons during the Manhattan Project is one of the most significant scientific events of the twentieth century. This revised and updated 4th edition explores the challenges that faced the scientists and engineers of the Manhattan Project. It gives a clear introduction to fission weapons at the level of an upper-year undergraduate physics student by examining the details of nuclear reactions, their energy release, analytic and numerical models of the fission process, how critical masses can be estimated, how fissile materials are produced, and what factors complicate bomb design. An extensive list of references and a number of exercises for self-study are included. Revisions to this fourth edition include many upgrades and new sections. Improvements are made to, among other things, the analysis of the physics of the fission barrier, the time-dependent simulation of the explosion of a nuclear weapon, and the discussion of tamped bomb cores. New sections cover, for example, composite bomb cores, approximate methods for various of the calculations presented, and the physics of the polonium-beryllium "neutron initiators" used to trigger the bombs. The author delivers in this book an unparalleled, clear and comprehensive treatment of the physics behind the Manhattan project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work derives from a conference discussing the history of computing in education. This conference is the first of hopefully a series of conferences that will take place within the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and hence, we describe it as the First Conference on the History of Computing in Education (HCE1). These proceedings represent a collection of works presented at the HCE1 Conference held in association with the IFIP 2004 World Computer Congress held in Toulouse, France. Contributions to this volume range from a wide variety of educational perspectives and represent activities from four continents. The HCE1 conference represents a joint effort of the IFIP Working Group 9.7 on the History of Computing and the IFIP Technical Committee 3 on Education. The HCE1 Conference brings to light a broad spectrum of issues and spans fourcontinents. It illustrates topics in computing education as they occurred in the “early days” of computing whose ramifications or overtones remain with us today. Indeed, many of the early challenges remain part of our educational tapestry; most likely, many will evolve into future challenges. Therefore, this work provides additional value to the reader as it will reflect in part the future development of computing in education to stimulate new ideas and models in educational development.
