Book Synopsis The Cambridge History of Medieval Canon Law by : Anders Winroth
Download or read book The Cambridge History of Medieval Canon Law written by Anders Winroth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canon law touched nearly every aspect of medieval society, including many issues we now think of as purely secular. It regulated marriages, oaths, usury, sorcery, heresy, university life, penance, just war, court procedure, and Christian relations with religious minorities. Canon law also regulated the clergy and the Church, one of the most important institutions in the Middle Ages. This Cambridge History offers a comprehensive survey of canon law, both chronologically and thematically. Written by an international team of scholars, it explores, in non-technical language, how it operated in the daily life of people and in the great political events of the time. The volume demonstrates that medieval canon law holds a unique position in the legal history of Europe. Indeed, the influence of medieval canon law, which was at the forefront of introducing and defining concepts such as 'equity,' 'rationality,' 'office,' and 'positive law,' has been enormous, long-lasting, and remarkably diverse.

Book Synopsis Pope Alexander III (1159–81) by : Professor Anne J Duggan
Download or read book Pope Alexander III (1159–81) written by Professor Anne J Duggan and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-28 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander III was one of the most important popes of the Middle Ages and his papacy (1159-81) marked a significant watershed in the history of the Western Church and society. This book provides a long overdue reassessment of his papacy and his achievements, bringing together thirteen essays which review existing scholarship and present the latest research and new perspectives. Individual chapters cover topics such as Alexander's many contributions to the law of the Church, which had a major impact upon Western society, notably on marriage, his relations with Byzantium, and the extension of papal authority at the peripheries of the West, in Spain, Northern Europe and the Holy Land. But dominant are the major clashes between secular and spiritual authority: the confrontation between Henry II of England and Thomas Becket after which Alexander eventually secured the king's co-operation and the pope's eighteen-year conflict with the German emperor, Frederick I. Both the papacy and the Western Church emerged as stronger institutions from this struggle, largely owing to Alexander's leadership and resilience: he truly mastered the art of survival.
Book Synopsis Canonical Collections of the Early Middle Ages (ca. 400-1140) by : Lotte Kéry
Download or read book Canonical Collections of the Early Middle Ages (ca. 400-1140) written by Lotte Kéry and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains a bibliographical survey of the chronological and systematic canonical collections in the Latin West from the beginnings of Christianity to Gratian's Decretum (ca. 1140). Dr. Kéry not only has compiled a catalogue of early medieval canonistic manuscripts, but has included valuable information about them. For each collection she has described its type and contents, the time and place of compilation, and, when, possible, its author. Full bibliographies have been provided for each collection, arranged in chronological order. Scholars will find her work particularly useful since she has also noted where scholars have differed and where their opinions may be found. Special attention has been paid to the numerous recensions of the collections. She has given a separate entry for important recensions and has lists of fragments and abbreviated forms of the collections.
Book Synopsis The Twelfth-Century Renaissance by : R.N. Swanson
Download or read book The Twelfth-Century Renaissance written by R.N. Swanson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1999-09-11 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume surveys the wide range of cultural and intellectual changes in western Europe in the period 1050-1250. The Twelfth-Century Renaissance first establishes the broader context for the changes and introduces the debate on the validity of the term "Renaissance" as a label for the period. Summarizing current scholarship, without imposing a particular interpretation of the issues, the book provides an accessible introduction to a vibrant and vital period in Europe’s cultural and intellectual history.
Book Synopsis Order in the Court: Medieval Procedural Treatises in Translation by : Bruce Brasington
Download or read book Order in the Court: Medieval Procedural Treatises in Translation written by Bruce Brasington and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Order in the Court, Brasington translates and comments upon the earliest medieval treatises on ecclesiastical legal procedure. Beginning with the eleventh-century “Marturi Case,” the first citation of the Digest in court since late antiquity and the jurist Bulgarus’ letter to Haimeric, the papal chancellor, we witness the evolution of Roman-law procedure in Italy. The study then focusses on Anglo-Norman works, all from the second half of the twelfth century. The De edendo, the Practica legum of Bishop William of Longchamp, and the Ordo Bambergensis blend Roman and canon law to guide the judge, advocate, and litigant in court. These reveal the study and practice of the learned law during the turbulent “Age of Becket” and its aftermath.

Book Synopsis From a Reading Book to a Structuralized Canonical Collection by : Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi
Download or read book From a Reading Book to a Structuralized Canonical Collection written by Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formation or developing process of the Ivonian work (i.e. Decretum, Panormia, Tripartita) is an emblematic example for the proper textual-history of Medieval Canonical Collections before the late 12th century. The recent studies concerning the Pre-Gratian canon law collections show well how the earlier meaning of “canonical collection” differs from its classical meaning. The fundamental intention was to summarize the whole of canon law which – as “ius sacrum” – served the daily life of the Church and was useful in every field of the ecclesiastical activity. The textual families of Ivo’s canonical work and the textual variants of these families demonstrate well this intention. In this present volume are described several 11th-12th century manuscripts and fragments of the Ivonian canon law collection. The precise paleographical, codicological and textual-critical analysis which was done by the author has improved the considerations on the step by step textual-development. These new results have shown in new light Ivo’s compiling work.
Book Synopsis England and Europe in the Reign of Henry III (1216–1272) by : Ifor W. Rowlands
Download or read book England and Europe in the Reign of Henry III (1216–1272) written by Ifor W. Rowlands and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The close political, economic and cultural ties that developed between England and its neighbours were a defining feature of the rule of Henry III, which permeated nearly all levels of society from the king and his barons to the Church and merchants, artisans and fortune hunters. They were evident both in the high politics of Henry III, as well as in the more general cultural developments, as can be seen in the French architecture, Italian masonry and German goldwork of Westminster Abbey. They can likewise be traced with regard to individuals such as Simon de Montfort, whose family was active in the Holy Land, Languedoc, Northern France and England. In short, thirteenth century England formed part of a broader European cultural, political and economic commonwealth. The essays that form this volume demonstrate the variety and strength of these contacts between England and her neighbours during Henry's reign, and by seeking to place Henry's England within a broader geographical and thematic range, will contribute to a broader understanding of England's place within thirteenth century Europe.
