Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Indignation Meeting Held in Faneuil Hall, Thursday Evening, August 1, 1878 On Tuesday, June 25, 1878, Ezra H. Heywood, of Princeton, Massachusetts, was sentenced, in the United States Circuit Court, to two years' imprisonment at hard labor in Dedham Jail, and to pay a fine of one hundred dollars, the charge against him being that he had circulated through the mail an obscene pamphlet called "Cupid's Yokes." Shortly after his sentence, at one of the Sunday morning conferences which are regularly held at Investigator Hall, Boston, a committee was appointed to make arrangements for holding an indignation meeting. The committee consisted of Henry Damon, A. R. Spinney, Rev. J. M. L. Babcock, Laura Kendrick, J. P. Mendum, and Benj. R. Tucker. A petition was immediately put in circulation by this committee, asking the Boston Aldermen for the use of Faneuil Hall. It received the signatures of prominent and influential citizens, and was readily granted. Accordingly, a call was issued, inviting "all friends of free speech, irrespective of sect or party, to be present at a meeting to be held in Faneuil Hall, on Thursday evening, August 1 (the anniversary of the emancipation of the slaves in the West Indies), at o'clock, to protest against the injury done to the freedom of the press by the recent conviction, sentence, and imprisonment of Ezra H. Much of their rhetoric influences debates on issues surrounding children and sexuality today. Drawing on Victorian accounts of pregnant girls, prostitutes, Free Lovers, and others deemed "immoral," Nicola Beisel argues that rhetoric about the moral corruption of children speaks to an ongoing parental concern: that children will fail to replicate or exceed their parents' social position. The rhetoric of morality, she maintains, is more than symbolic and goes beyond efforts to control mass behavior. For the Victorians, it tapped into the fear that their own children could fall prey to vice and ultimately live in disgrace. In a rare analysis of Anthony Comstock's crusade with the New York and New England Societies for the Suppression of Vice, Beisel examines how the reformer worked on the anxieties of the upper classes. One tactic was to link moral corruption with the flood of immigrants, which succeeded in New York and Boston, where minorities posed a political threat to the upper classes. Showing how a moral crusade can bring a society's diffuse anxieties to focus on specific sources, Beisel offers a fresh theoretical approach to moral reform movements.

Godly Seed: American Evangelicals Confront Birth Control, 1873-1973, examines how mid-twentieth-century evangelical leaders eventually followed the mainstream into a quiet embrace of contraception, complemented by a brief acceptance of abortion. It places this change within the context of historic Christian teaching regarding birth control, including its origins in the early church and the shift in arguments made by the Reformers of the sixteenth century. The book explores the demographic effects of this transition and asks: did the delay by American evangelicals leaders in accepting birth control have consequences?At the same time, many American evangelicals are rethinking their acceptance of birth control even as a majority of the nation's Roman Catholics are rejecting their church's teaching on the practice.
