Book excerpt: The International Journal of Applied Evolutionary Computation (IJAEC) covers state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research on emerging areas and of intelligent computation (IC). By providing an academic and scientific forum for exchanging high quality results on innovative topics, trends and research in the field of IC, this journal expands the fields and the depths of its most principal and critical concepts. IJAEC extends existing research findings (theoretical innovations and modeling applications) to provide the highest quality original concepts, hybrid applications, innovative methodologies, and the development trends studies for all audiences. IJAEC publishes three categories of papers: research papers, research notes, and research review. Research papers have significant original research findings. The research must be complete and contribute substantially to knowledge in the field. Research notes comprise research that is complete but not as comprehensive as to meet the criteria of a full research paper. Research reviews are novel, insightful, and carefully crafted articles that conceptualize research areas and synthesize prior research. Research review articles must provide new insights that advance our understanding of the research areas and help in identifying and developing future research directions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book reports on recent developments in the theory of evolutionary computation, or more generally the domain of randomized search heuristics. It starts with two chapters on mathematical methods that are often used in the analysis of randomized search heuristics, followed by three chapters on how to measure the complexity of a search heuristic: black-box complexity, a counterpart of classical complexity theory in black-box optimization; parameterized complexity, aimed at a more fine-grained view of the difficulty of problems; and the fixed-budget perspective, which answers the question of how good a solution will be after investing a certain computational budget. The book then describes theoretical results on three important questions in evolutionary computation: how to profit from changing the parameters during the run of an algorithm; how evolutionary algorithms cope with dynamically changing or stochastic environments; and how population diversity influences performance. Finally, the book looks at three algorithm classes that have only recently become the focus of theoretical work: estimation-of-distribution algorithms; artificial immune systems; and genetic programming. Throughout the book the contributing authors try to develop an understanding for how these methods work, and why they are so successful in many applications. The book will be useful for students and researchers in theoretical computer science and evolutionary computing.

Book excerpt: Research in the domains of learning analytics and educational data mining has prototyped an approach where methodologies from data science and machine learning are used to gain insights into the learning process by using large amounts of data. As many training and academic institutions are maturing in their data-driven decision making, useful, scalable, and interesting trends are emerging. Organizations can benefit from sharing information on those efforts. Applying Data Science and Learning Analytics Throughout a Learner’s Lifespan examines novel and emerging applications of data science and sister disciplines for gaining insights from data to inform interventions into learners’ journeys and interactions with academic institutions. Data is collected at various times and places throughout a learner’s lifecycle, and the learners and the institution should benefit from the insights and knowledge gained from this data. Covering topics such as learning analytics dashboards, text network analysis, and employment recruitment, this book is an indispensable resource for educators, computer scientists, faculty of higher education, government officials, educational administration, students of higher education, pre-service teachers, business professionals, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: In recent years, soft computing techniques have emerged as a successful tool to understand and analyze the collective behavior of service- oriented computing software. Algorithms and mechanisms of self- organization of complex natural systems have been used to solve problems, particularly in complex systems, which are adaptive, ever- evolving, and distributed in nature across the globe. What fits more perfectly into this scenario other than the rapidly developing era of Fog, IoT, and Edge computing environment? Service- oriented computing can be enhanced with soft computing techniques embedded inside the Cloud, Fog, and IoT systems. Soft Computing Principles and Integration for Real-Time Service-Oriented Computing explores soft computing techniques that have wide application in interdisciplinary areas. These soft computing techniques provide an optimal solution to the optimization problem using single or multiple objectives. The book focuses on basic design principles and analysis of soft computing techniques. It discusses how soft computing techniques can be used to improve quality-of-service in serviceoriented architectures. The book also covers applications and integration of soft computing techniques with a service- oriented computing paradigm. Highlights of the book include: A general introduction to soft computing An extensive literature study of soft computing techniques and emerging trends Soft computing techniques based on the principles of artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic, and neural networks The implementation of SOC with a focus on service composition and orchestration, quality of service (QoS) considerations, security and privacy concerns, governance challenges, and the integration of legacy systems The applications of soft computing in adaptive service composition, intelligent service recommendation, fault detection and diagnosis, SLA management, and security Such principles underlying SOC as loose coupling, reusability, interoperability, and abstraction An IoT based framework for real time data collection and analysis using soft computing

Focused on applying evolutionary computation concepts and techniques to the domain of electronics, many researchers now see it as holding the greatest potential for overcoming the drawbacks of conventional design techniques. Evolutionary Electronics: Automatic Design of Electronic Circuits and Systems by Genetic Algorithms formally introduces and defines this area of research, presents its main challenges in electronic design, and explores emerging technologies. It describes the evolutionary computation paradigm and its primary algorithms, and explores topics of current interest, such as multi-objective optimization. The authors examine numerous evolutionary electronics applications, draw conclusions about those applications, and sketch the future of evolutionary computation and its applications in electronics. In coming years, the appearance of more and more advanced technologies will increase the complexity of optimization and synthesis problems, and evolutionary electronics will almost certainly become a key to solving those problems. Evolutionary Electronics is your key to discovering and unlocking the potential of this promising new field.

Book excerpt: Identifying Emerging Trends in Technological Innovation Doctoral programs in science and engineering are important sources of innovative ideas and techniques that might lead to new products and technological innovation. Certainly most PhD students are not experienced researchers and are in the process of learning how to do research. Nevertheless, a number of empiric studies also show that a high number of technological innovation ideas are produced in the early careers of researchers. The combination of the eagerness to try new approaches and directions of young doctoral students with the experience and broad knowledge of their supervisors is likely to result in an important pool of innovation potential. The DoCEIS doctoral conference on Computing, Electrical and Industrial En- neering aims at creating a space for sharing and discussing ideas and results from doctoral research in these inter-related areas of engineering. Innovative ideas and hypotheses can be better enhanced when presented and discussed in an encouraging and open environment. DoCEIS aims to provide such an environment, releasing PhD students from the pressure of presenting their propositions in more formal contexts.
