This book was released on 2017 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bitumen is most commonly used as a binder in road pavement construction. Due to the harsh climate changes and heavier traffic loads, bitumen tends to undergo rutting and cracking which severely limits its service life and durability. Bitumen-based binders containing various proportions of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) triblock copolymer, crumb rubber (CR) and fumed nanosilica have been synthesized. The modified binders have been studied for rheological properties, storage stability, nanoparticle dispersion, and thermal resistance. In addition, binder-sand composites have been prepared in a binder/sand weight ratio of 1:9 and have been tested for three-point flexural bend tests. Addition of nanosilica dramatically improves the rheological properties of bitumen with enhancements as great as 400% and the compatibility between bitumen and polymers is enhanced. In addition, CR-modified bitumen demonstrates a similar level of performance as SBS-modified bitumen, when both are used synergistically with nanosilica, which leads to beneficial environmental and economic impacts. Finally, the interfacial mechanisms between bitumen, polymers and nanosilica that are responsible for modification of bitumen using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) were investigated and correlated with the performance of the materials.

Book excerpt: The addition of polymers to bitumen allows the modification of certain physical properties, such as softening point, brittleness and ductility, of the bitumen. Polymer modified bitumen: Properties and characterisation provides a valuable and in-depth coverage of the science and technology of polymer modified bitumen. After an initial introduction to bitumen and polymer modified bitumen, the book is divided into two parts. Chapters in part one focus on the preparation and properties of a range of polymer modified bitumen, including polymer bitumen emulsions, modification of bitumen with poly (urethanes), waste rubber and plastic and polypropylene fibres. Part two addresses the characterisation and properties of polymer modified bitumen. Chapter topics covered include rheology, simulated and actual long term ageing studies; the solubility of bituminous binders in fuels and the use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to study ageing/oxidation of polymer modified bitumen. Polymer modified bitumen is an essential reference for scientists and engineers, from both academia and the civil engineering and transport industries, interested in the properties and characterisation of polymer modified bitumen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixtures of the styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and styrene-ethylene-butene-styrene (SEBS) respectivly with different types of bituminous materials or oils have been investigated. We can here, with the aid of size exclusion chromotography (SEC), suggest that pronounced molecular size changes occur both in the bitumen and the polymer phase due to processing and ageing. The processing temperature was chosen to 200 °C (392 F) and the ageing temperature to 70 °C (158 F). The changes in molecular size are correlated to changes in mechanical properties. Compatibility conditions also seem to influence the degradation course. Prolonged exposure of the materials to 200 °C in inert, nitrogen, atmosphere has also been performed. No detectable difference in molecular weight could be found. The results give important implications for both processing handling and long term properties of modified bitumen.

Book excerpt: Fundamental concepts coupled with practical, step-by-step guidance With its emphasis on core principles, this text equips readers with the skills and knowledge to design the many processes needed to safely and successfully manufacture thermoplastic parts. The first half of the text sets forth the general theory and concepts underlying polymer processing, such as the viscoelastic response of polymeric fluids and diffusion and mass transfer. Next, the text explores specific practical aspects of polymer processing, including mixing, extrusion dies, and post-die processing. By addressing a broad range of design issues and methods, the authors demonstrate how to solve most common processing problems. This Second Edition of the highly acclaimed Polymer Processing has been thoroughly updated to reflect current polymer processing issues and practices. New areas of coverage include: Micro-injection molding to produce objects weighing a fraction of a gram, such as miniature gears and biomedical devices New chapter dedicated to the recycling of thermoplastics and the processing of renewable polymers Life-cycle assessment, a systematic method for determining whether recycling is appropriate and which form of recycling is optimal Rheology of polymers containing fibers Chapters feature problem sets, enabling readers to assess and reinforce their knowledge as they progress through the text. There are also special design problems throughout the text that reflect real-world polymer processing issues. A companion website features numerical subroutines as well as guidance for using MATLAB®, IMSL®, and Excel to solve the sample problems from the text. By providing both underlying theory and practical step-by-step guidance, Polymer Processing is recommended for students in chemical, mechanical, materials, and polymer engineering.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive book provides guidelines for maximizing plastics proc essing efficiency in the manufacture of all types of products, using all types of plastics. A practical approach is employed to present fundamental, yet comprehensive, coverage of processing concepts. The information and data presented by the many tables and figures interrelate the different variables that affect injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming, compression molding, reinforced plastics molding, rotational molding, re action injection molding, coining, casting, and other processes. The text presents a great number of problems pertaining to different phases of processing. Solutions are provided that will meet product per formance requirements at the lowest cost. Many of the processing variables and their behaviors in the different processes are the same, as they all in volve basic conditions of temperature, time, and pressure. The book begins with information applicable to all processes, on topics such as melt soft ening flow and controls; all processes fit into an overall scheme that re quires the interaction and proper control of systems. Individual processes are reviewed to show the effects of changing different variables to meet the goal of zero defects. The content is arranged to provide a natural progres sion from simple to complex situations, which range from control of a sin gle manual machine to simulation of sophisticated computerized processes that interface with many different processing functions.

Today, emerging applications such as tire reclamation and smoke-resistant cables combine with an industry push into engineering materials to create new kinds of compounds with new quality control problems. The Mixing of Rubber has been developed over several years in conjunction with the Farrel Corp./Connecticut Rubber Group course to educate the hands-on compounder and the end user as well. It covers machinery, mixing, process control, quality control, plant operations and mixing advice for specific compounds. Like the course, the book assumes no prior knowledge of rubber compounding but leads the technologist through the process from mix procedure to test.
