Book excerpt: Bridge deck deterioration in the northern Midwest creates significant costs to state Departments of Transportation (DOT's) in the region. The fundamental cause of the problem is low tensile strength and water permeable reinforced concrete resulting in deck cracking and ultimately reinforcing bar corrosion. Portland Cement Polymer Concrete (PCPC) combined with a design approach tailored to its advantages could virtually eliminate early deck deterioration and the associated costs providing an alternative asset management path for bridge decks. Bridge decks would no longer have to be removed from their substructure every fifteen years and replaced. The results would be higher quality, longer lasting bridge decks with lower life cycle costs. This project will demonstrate the feasibility and methodology of such a strategy. This project will develop a strategy that combines innovative concrete materials, novel design and cost analysis that enhances the longevity and reduces the life cycle cost of highway bridge decks. The project is expected to show significant life-cycle cost advantages to using a high performance bridge deck material.

Book Synopsis The Use of Polymer Concrete for Bridge Deck Repairs on the Major Deegan Expressway by :
Download or read book The Use of Polymer Concrete for Bridge Deck Repairs on the Major Deegan Expressway written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practicality of using polymer concrete to repair holes in bridge decks has been demonstrated by the repair of two large holes in the Third and Lincoln Avenues Viaduct of the Major Deegan Expressway in New York City. All of the work was confined to the non-rush hour (10AM-3PM) part of the day and at least one lane of traffic was maintained on the roadway at all times. The material cost of polymer concrete was 1400 dollars or 260 dollars-cu yd. This represented 4% of the total repair cost and indicates that the material cost is insignificant when repairs on major arterial highways are performed. The use of polymer concrete appears cost effective.

Download or read book The Use of Concrete Polymer Materials for Bridge Deck Applications written by LE. Kukacka and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid deterioration of concrete bridge decks as a result of the increased use of deicing salts is one of the most severe problems facing the highway industry today. One possible solution to the problem is the use of concrete polymer materials. The materials of prime interest are polymer-impregnated concrete and polymer concrete, both of which have excellent durability and strength properties. Three potential applications (repair of deteriorated bridge decks, polymer impregnation of new bridge deck surfaces, and full impregnation of precast deck panels) have been studied in laboratory and field tests, and the results have been encouraging. These results and economic considerations are described in the paper. The work in each of the areas is currently being implemented by the Federal Highway Administration.

Download or read book Polymer Concrete Overlay Test Program Users' Manual written by John C. Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1960's, the major concern of bridge maintenance engineers has been bridge deck repairs. Highway departments across the country found bridge maintenance costs soaring as bridge decks deteriorated to an unsound condition. As one avenue approaching this bridge deck repair problem, the Federal Highway Administration commissioned the Oregon State Highway Division to investigate the use of a quick setting, high-early strength material called polymer concrete.

Book Synopsis Concrete-polymer Materials for Highway Applications. Final Report. [Repair of Bridge Decks]. by :
Download or read book Concrete-polymer Materials for Highway Applications. Final Report. [Repair of Bridge Decks]. written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research was done in three general areas: material properties of polymer-impregnated concrete, repair of deteriorated and delaminated bridge decks, and polymer impregnation of new deck surfaces. Structural and durability properties of impregnated normal and structural lightweight concretes were measured. Effects of temperature and cyclic loading were investigated and bond pull-out strength of reinforcement was measured. Process variables studied include monomer type, method of polymerization, aggregate type, and air content of the concrete. Compared with the controls, the properties of MMA-impregnated samples were improved by factors ranging from 2.6 to 4.5. Use of polymer-impregnated concrete to prevent chloride penetration into bridge decks was demonstrated and prototype deck panels have been evaluated. Impregnation offers a potential solution to the bridge deck deterioration problem. Impregnated curbstones are also being tested. Techniques for repairing highly deteriorated and delaminated bridge decks by monomer impregnation were demonstrated in field tests in which a 6-in.-thick section of deck was impregnated. Cores taken from the reconstituted deck had compressive strengths and water absorptions of 5000 psi and 1.6 percent, respectively. Plans to repair an entire deck are being formulated by NYSDOT. Low-viscosity monomer systems that can be used to repair delaminated concrete have been developed. (auth).
