Book excerpt: I used to be a spoiled princess, a diva whose life revolved around clothes and expensive trips. Worth fifty million dollars only half a year ago, now I'm down to living on pennies. No more weekend escapades to Aspen or skinny-dipping in Barcelona for me. No more security guards or private chauffeurs. My designer clothes and exclusive jewelry are all gone. My life turned upside down when my father was charged for a crime he didn’t commit; a bomb explosion that took the lives of twelve people in the heart of Los Angeles. Hope comes in the form of a gorgeous man and a deal I have no alternative but to accept. Ethan Koenig, a mysterious businessman I haven't heard of before, offers me a helping hand that comes with conditions...conditions that send fear into my heart and delicious shivers down my body. Suspiciously familiar with my father's case, Ethan leads me toward dark secrets that go way beyond the bomb explosion. With each new revelation, I realize the man who's helping me might be the one behind it all. By the time I try to escape, it's too late. My heart is irrevocably lost to the man whose one and only purpose in life is to take revenge on my family.

And, for some strange reason, he wants me to be his pretend girlfriend in exchange for a big sum of money. He has one condition, though: I cannot get close to a man, or be seen with one during the one year I'm contracted with him. I thought it'd be a piece of cake, until I meet his two grown-up, gloriously handsome sons, who won't take no for an answer, including from me. I'll not fall for their cheap tricks even if it means I have to close my eyes each time I see them. And each time I close my eyes, I imagine their naked bodies doing sinful acts on mine. God help me before my physical urges get the best of me, and the contract blows up in my face.

Book Synopsis The Tragedie of Macbeth by : William Shakespeare
Download or read book The Tragedie of Macbeth written by William Shakespeare and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Based on the principle that Shakespeare's plays were written as popular (and not entirely decent) entertainments aimed at an adult (and not overly refined) audience, this no-nonsense and sexually candid text offers performers, scholars, and anyone with an interest in Shakespeare a unique resource to gain valuable insights into the play, the world in which Shakespeare wrote, and the playhouse in which his plays were produced.

Human behavior is now being driven by a new survival instinct -- a new primal desire -- that is invisibly but unstoppably reshaping the world, from the most intimate details of our private lives to the dynamics of the global marketplace. The New Culture of Desire reveals and chronicles this present and future brave new world -- the beginning of Human History Part II. According to futurist Melinda Davis, it is evolving right under our noses, and we need to adapt now to survive -- and to thrive. Described variously as "a secret weapon of the Fortune 100" and a "hired-gun visionary," Davis divulges the startling conclusions and once confidential details of The Human Desire Project, a six-year, multidisciplinary study to investigate what makes human beings want what they want and do what they do. Originally initiated as a landmark study for big business (Davis's client ranks include distinguished companies such as AT&T, Merck, Diageo, Procter & Gamble, L'Oréal, Unilever, and Lucent Technologies), The Human Desire Project evolved into an even larger phenomenon with far-reaching implications for all of our lives. In The New Culture of Desire, you learn to leverage for your own good fortune, today -- and into tomorrow -- the same insights and strategies that inform the future plans of some of the most powerful corporate movers and shakers around. Here are just some of the revelations of The New Culture of Desire: • The unconscious formula that we all use to make choices now • Why bliss beats sex, money, and power • The new peak experience: the State of O • The single greatest unmet consumer need • The battle for our interior lives • The five strategies we enlist to satisfy the new primal desire -- and what they mean for your life and your business Harvard-educated and street-smart, Davis examines the telltale signs of our rapidly morphing world with the nose of an MIT/MTV anthropologist and an arsenal of case histories. Quizzes and checklists appear throughout the book to help you diagnose your own desires. New marketing models provide new ways to speak more powerfully to the heart of your customers' true desires. This insider's analysis of the most powerful desire-driven trends of our time provides a strategic guide to the inside of the new millennial mind, to help you understand your own motivations and those of your colleagues, customers, and friends. Book Synopsis Multilingual Life Writing by French and Francophone Women by : Natalie Edwards
Download or read book Multilingual Life Writing by French and Francophone Women written by Natalie Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the ways in which multilingual women authors incorporate several languages into their life writing. It compares the work of six contemporary authors who write predominantly in French. It analyses the narrative strategies they develop to incorporate more than one language into their life writing: French and English, French and Creole, or French and German, for example. The book demonstrates how women writers transform languages to invent new linguistic formations and how they create new formulations of subjectivity within their self-narrative. It intervenes in current debates over global literature, national literatures and translingual and transnational writing, which constitute major areas of research in literary and cultural studies. It also contributes to debates in linguistics through its theoretical framework of translanguaging. It argues that multilingual authors create new paradigms for life writing and that they question our understanding of categories such as "French literature."

Book Synopsis European Stevenson by : Richard Ambrosini
Download or read book European Stevenson written by Richard Ambrosini and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edinburgh, late 1860s. Two young gentlemen, their heads buzzing with ideas and artistic ambitions, hang over North Bridge “watching the trains start southward and longing to start too,” the Walter Scott Monument a short way behind them, but their eyes fixed on the tracks leading South, to London and the Continent. In their Introduction the editors see this scene with his painter cousin as symbolically significant for Robert Louis Stevenson’s writing career. Through his connection with Europe, and especially France, he participated in an international exchange of ideas on art which led him in the 1870s to reinvent his relationship with his national literary tradition by exploring a variety of essayistic forms. He would eventually confront the shadow of the Scott Monument when he turned to novel writing in the ‘80s, but the nature of his innovations as a novelist cannot be understood without taking into account the lessons he learned in France. The papers that follow first explore the way Stevenson’s world-view and cultural background interacted with European landscape, literature and painting in that key early decade. Later chapters examine the influence of Stevenson on European writers (Proust, Cocteau, Brecht and Calvino) and on other creative artists. The volume aims to show how European culture contributed to Stevenson’s greatest achievements and then to explain why, with Stevenson ignored by Anglo-American critics for most of the twentieth century, he still remained an admired model for Europeans.

Book Synopsis Bring on the Books for Everybody by : Jim Collins
Download or read book Bring on the Books for Everybody written by Jim Collins and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bring on the Books for Everybody is an engaging assessment of the robust popular literary culture that has developed in the United States during the past two decades. Jim Collins describes how a once solitary and print-based experience has become an exuberantly social activity, enjoyed as much on the screen as on the page. Fueled by Oprah’s Book Club, Miramax film adaptations, superstore bookshops, and new technologies such as the Kindle digital reader, literary fiction has been transformed into best-selling, high-concept entertainment. Collins highlights the infrastructural and cultural changes that have given rise to a flourishing reading public at a time when the future of the book has been called into question. Book reading, he claims, has not become obsolete; it has become integrated into popular visual media. Collins explores how digital technologies and the convergence of literary, visual, and consumer cultures have changed what counts as a “literary experience” in phenomena ranging from lush film adaptations such as The English Patient and Shakespeare in Love to the customer communities at Amazon. Central to Collins’s analysis and, he argues, to contemporary literary culture, is the notion that refined taste is now easily acquired; it is just a matter of knowing where to access it and whose advice to trust. Using recent novels, he shows that the redefined literary landscape has affected not just how books are being read, but also what sort of novels are being written for these passionate readers. Collins connects literary bestsellers from The Jane Austen Book Club and Literacy and Longing in L.A. to Saturday and The Line of Beauty, highlighting their depictions of fictional worlds filled with avid readers and their equations of reading with cultivated consumer taste.
