Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy should give the human being a mental basis that will allow man to lead a happy life and solve the problems of the now. Philosophy does not consist of making things complicated and incomprehensible like today's degenerate philosophies do. In this book, no philosophical phrases are discussed in order to play mental soccer. This book gives basics about life, which one can apply to lead to a fulfilled, happy existence. Basic questions about life itself are solved. What is life? What is man? Is it that a creature arose from mud by chance as science tells you? Or is it that matter is motivated by a soul as the priest makes you believe. Why does man think the way he thinks? What is the goal of existence?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life's Basis and Life's Ideal: The Fundamentals of a New Philosophy of Life Brief reference may be made here to an attitude, common in the present time, especially among English-speaking peoples, which the author does not explicitly mention. I mean the attitude of Agnosticism. This, he would contend and it would seem rightly, is in the main theoretical and does not, as such correspond to or represent a system of life. The agnostic s system of life is formed of aspects of the systems discussed, with a strong tendency to Naturalism. The case of Huxley, who coined the term A gnosticism, is an excellent example notwithstanding his frequently insisting with considerable force upon truths essentially idealistic, no one can doubt the predominant naturalistic tendency of his thought. As a rule the adoption of the attitude of Agnosticism is an attempt, as Dr. Ward has so clearly and forcibly argued in his Naturalism and to escape from the difficulties of Naturalism, which in the end it betrays. Agnosticism is, in fact, only an assumed absence of a theory of life. Professor Eucken would insist that the instability of the position is intolerable in actual life. Life's demand for unification, for consciousness of a meaning and a value, drives us beyond it. Mere research, he writes, p. 272, can tolerate a state Of hesitation between affirmation and negation; it must Often refrain from a decision in the case of special problems. Life, however. Book excerpt: We all try to make sense of life. These efforts result in a "philosophy of life" - an inner "map" of our core ideas about ourselves and the world. In this sense, everyone has a "life philosophy." It might be conscious or unconscious, accidental or deliberate, simple or complex. But it's always important. It's the "code" we live by. It governs everything we think, feel, and do. Despite this, we don't always take time to consciously examine our life philosophy in a way that's deliberate, thorough, and systematic.A life philosophy can be fragile or sturdy. It can hold strong under life's toughest challenges, or collapse into an existential crisis. This book explores the fundamentals of the life philosophy, or the effort to "think life through." It offers a simple 7-step process to examine a life philosophy, test it, and build a sturdy foundation for a well-lived life.

Book excerpt: Basics of PhilosophyBasics of Philosophy For beginnersAt its simplest, philosophy (from the Greek phílosophía or phílosophía, meaning 'the love of wisdom') is the study of knowledge, or "thinking about thinking", although the breadth of what it covers is perhaps best illustrated by a selection of other alternative definitions: the discipline concerned with questions of how one should live (ethics); what sorts of things exist and what are their essential natures (metaphysics); what counts as genuine knowledge (epistemology); and what are the correct principles of reasoning (logic) (Wikipedia)investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods (American Heritage Dictionary)the study of the ultimate nature of existence, reality, knowledge and goodness, as discoverable by human reasoning (Penguin English Dictionary)the rational investigation of questions about existence and knowledge and ethics (WordNet)the search for knowledge and truth, especially about the nature of man and his behavior and beliefs (Kernerman English Multilingual Dictionary)the rational and critical inquiry into basic principles (Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia)the study of the most general and abstract features of the world and categories with which we think: mind, matter, reason, proof, truth, etc. (Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy)careful thought about the fundamental nature of the world, the grounds for human knowledge, and the evaluation of human conduct (The Philosophy Pages)As used originally by the ancient Greeks, the term "philosophy" meant the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, and comprised ALL areas of speculative thought, including the arts, sciences and religion.Philosophical questions (unlike those of the sciences) are usually foundational and abstract in nature. Philosophy is done primarily through reflection and does not tend to rely on experiment, although the methods used to study it may be analogous to those used in the study of the natural sciences. In common usage, it sometimes carries the sense of unproductive or frivolous musings, but over the centuries it has produced some of the most important original thought, and its contribution to politics, sociology, mathematics, science and literature has been inestimable. Although the study of philosophy may not yield "the meaning of life, the universe and everything", many philosophers believe that it is important that each of us examines such questions and even that an unexamined life is not worth living. It also provides a good way of learning to think more clearly about a wide range of issues, and its methods of analyzing arguments can be useful in a variety of situations in other areas of life.

Book excerpt: ‘Philosophy: The Basics deservedly remains the most recommended introduction to philosophy on the market. Warburton is patient, accurate and, above all, clear. There is no better short introduction to philosophy.’ - Stephen Law, author of The Philosophy Gym Philosophy: The Basics gently eases the reader into the world of philosophy. Each chapter considers a key area of philosophy, explaining and exploring the basic ideas and themes including: Can you prove God exists? How do we know right from wrong? What are the limits of free speech? Do you know how science works? Is your mind different from your body? Can you define art? How should we treat non-human animals? For the fifth edition of this best-selling book, Nigel Warburton has added an entirely new chapter on animals, revised others and brought the further reading sections up to date. If you’ve ever asked ‘what is philosophy?’, or wondered whether the world is really the way you think it is, this is the book for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among world's three major philosophic traditions, Chinese philosophy excels in ethical discourse. As a collective wisdom on a par with Aristotle's 'Ethics' and Kant's 'Critique of Practical Reason', Chinese philosophy now needs to be systematized and developed. Today, Chinese philosophy per se has often been reduced to the historical approach to it, hence its slower development in comparison with European and Indian philosophies. The author of this book avails himself of Kant's model of human psychic structure, synthesizes the basic elements of Chinese philosophy into a rigorous theoretical framework, and presents a panoptic view of the edifice of traditional Chinese philosophy.
