Book excerpt: Perceptions of the Protestant Reformation in Seventh-day Adventism offers 18 scholarly articles presented at they Second International Symposium organized by the Institute of Adventist Studies of Friedensau Adventist University, Germany, May 9-12, 2016. The contributors represent Adventist historical and theological scholarship in Europe and North America. Well trained in their fields and knowledgeable about their subject matter, they analyze the 16th-century Reformation from the perspective of the Seventh-day Adventist tradition. 500 years after Martin Luther set off a new era in Christian beliefs and practices, churches that see themselves as heirs of the Reformation do well to critically reflect on their perception of the Protestant Reformers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of Seventhday Adventist interchurch relations – a 20-million member body whose ecumenical stance has so far been underresearched. For the sake of interpreting denominational involvement and reservations in Adventism as well as beyond, the study develops a new academic approach to ecumenism based on Relational Models Theory, a comprehensive social science paradigm of interpreting human relationships. The resulting typology of ecumenical interactions and the historical case study of Adventism suggest that such a relational interpretation of ecumenical interaction sheds light on many of the unresolved issues in ecumenics – such as divergent concepts of unity, difficulties in recognition processes, and the permanence of denominationalism.

Book excerpt: My book's objective is to describe the beliefs, practices, and ventures of the Adventist church that have had or still have a significant impact on my life. Looking back, I now have a better understanding why ancient Israel was repeatedly told to remember what God had done for them. For this reason, there will be much reminiscing, retelling of personal experiences, and evaluating church teachings and decisions, all in the endeavor to make sense of what has happened. That can only take place if we bathe our words and expressions in grace, love and understanding. The book endeavors to answer the underlying question: what do we mean when we use the term "church"? What are the primary reasons for its existence? When you ask Adventists such a question, we hope they answer with a reply that is inspiring and practical. In presenting my view of Adventism over the past seventy-five years, it's had a positive effect on my knowing and understanding Jesus-and I hope the same goes for you!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the twentieth century, while Lima’s aristocrats hotly debated the future of a nation filled with “Indians,” thousands of Aymara and Quechua Indians left the pews of the Catholic Church and were baptized into Seventh-day Adventism. One of the most staggering Christian phenomena of our time, the mass conversion from Catholicism to various forms of Protestantism in Latin America was so successful that Catholic contemporaries became extremely anxious on noticing that parts of the Indigenous population in the Andean plateau had joined a Protestant church. In Sacrifice and Regeneration Yael Mabat focuses on the extraordinary success of Seventh-day Adventism in the Andean highlands at the beginning of the twentieth century and sheds light on the historical trajectories of Protestantism in Latin America. By approaching the religious conversion among Indigenous populations in the Andes as a multifaceted and dynamic interaction between converts, missionaries, and their social settings and networks, Mabat demonstrates how the religious and spiritual needs of converts also brought salvation to the missionaries. Conversion had important ramifications on the way social, political, and economic institutions on the local and national level functioned. At the same time, socioeconomic currents had both short-term and long-term impacts on idiosyncratic religious practices and beliefs that both accelerated and impeded religious change. Mabat’s innovative historical perspective on religious transformation allows us to better comprehend the complex and often contradictory way in which Protestantism took shape in Latin America.

Book excerpt: "Enrique Ramos asks the question whether the differences of opinion between Traditional-Historical and Evangelical Adventists on the gospel of righteousness by faith can be easily resolved. In this quest he focusses on the role and beliefs of their prophetess and co-founder, Ellen Gould Harmon White (Ellen G. White) (1827-1915), and her pivotal role in this discussion. Seventh-day Adventism is a Christian denomination that claims to be Protestant and has, historically, opposed the Roman Catholic Church as being antichrist." - Ms. Gillian Ford
