Politics of Economic Planning collects together a number of papers from journals and contributed books that examine the problems of economic planning in a free society. They fall into three groups: Part 1 explains the idea of socialism and defines it in relation to democracy. Part 2 discusses problems of economic planning both in relation to political economy on the practice of planning and with the application of the theory of value to the conditions of a centrally directed economy. Part 3 examines the nature of economics.

Book excerpt: This book includes the papers presented at the II International Applied Research Conference “Operations and Project Management: Strategies and Trends” and the International Research Conference “Management in Financial Economy” held in Rostov-on-Don on May 19–20, 2021 within the framework of the South Russia Business Education Forum. The articles included in the book present a comprehensive analysis of the problems of adaptation of traditional and new methods of operational and project management, development of technologies for business process and supply chain management, development trends in financial economy discussed both on a global scale and in the context of sustainable socio-economic development at the meso-level of regions and industries, which not only reveals the nature of the ongoing processes, but also demonstrates their specifics in industry, agriculture, service industry in Russia, CIS countries, Europe, and China. Particular attention is paid to business education in the new economic realities. The polemical focus of the above-mentioned issues in conjunction with the accuracy of the presented analytics makes it possible to come to unconventional, though practically realizable solutions.

Book excerpt: This volume embodies a problem-driven and theoretically informed approach to bridging frontier research in urban economics and urban/regional planning. The authors focus on the interface between these two subdisciplines that have historically had an uneasy relationship. Although economists were among the early contributors to the literature on urban planning, many economists have been dismissive of a discipline whose leading scholars frequently favor regulations over market institutions, equity over efficiency, and normative prescriptions over positive analysis. Planners, meanwhile, even as they draw upon economic principles, often view the work of economists as abstract, not sensitive to institutional contexts, and communicated in a formal language spoken by few with decision making authority. Not surprisingly, papers in the leading economic journals rarely cite clearly pertinent papers in planning journals, and vice versa. Despite the historical divergence in perspectives and methods, urban economics and urban planning share an intense interest in many topic areas: the nature of cities, the prosperity of urban economies, the efficient provision of urban services, efficient systems of transportation, and the proper allocation of land between urban and environmental uses. In bridging this gap, the book highlights the best scholarship in planning and economics that address the most pressing urban problems of our day and stimulates further dialog between scholars in urban planning and urban economics.

This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a system of mathematical models and methods that can be used to analyze real economic and managerial decisions and to improve their effectiveness. Application areas include: management of development and operation budgets, assessment and management of economic systems using an energy entropy approach, equation of exchange rates and forecasting foreign exchange operations, evaluation of innovative projects, monitoring of governmental programs, risk management of investment processes, decisions on the allocation of resources, and identification of competitive industrial clusters. The proposed methods and models were tested on the example of Kazakhstan’s economy, but the generated solutions will be useful for applications at other levels and in other countries. Regarding your book "Mathematical Methods and Models in Economics", I am impressed because now it is time when "econometrics" is becoming more appreciated by economists and by schools that are the hosts or employers of modern economists. ... Your presented results really impressed me. John F. Nash, Jr., Princeton University, Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences The book is within my scope of interest because of its novelty and practicality. First, there is a need for realistic modeling of complex systems, both natural and artificial that conclude computer and economic systems. There has been an ongoing effort in developing models dealing with complexity and incomplete knowledge. Consequently, it is clear to recognize the contribution of Mutanov to encapsulate economic modeling with emphasis on budgeting and innovation. Secondly, the method proposed by Mutanov has been verified by applying to the case of the Republic of Kazakhstan, with her vibrant emerging economy. Thirdly, Chapter 5 of the book is of particular interest for the computer technology community because it deals with innovation. In summary, the book of Mutanov should become one of the outstanding recognized pragmatic guides for dealing with innovative systems. Andrzej Rucinski, University of New Hampshire This book is unique in its theoretical findings and practical applicability. The book is an illuminating study based on an applied mathematical model which uses methods such as linear programming and input-output analysis. Moreover, this work demonstrates the author’s great insight and academic brilliance in the fields of finance, technological innovations and marketing vis-à-vis the market economy. From both theoretical and practical standpoint, this work is indeed a great achievement. Yeon Cheon Oh, President of Seoul National University

Book excerpt: Quantitative Planning and Control: Essays in Honor of William Wager Cooper on the Occasion of His 65th Birthday features a collection of papers prepared by students and associates of William Wager Cooper to honor him on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday. The book centers on the theme of Quantitative Planning and Control, the theme to which much of Professor Cooper's research effort has been devoted. The theme covers diverse fields of inquiry as reflected in the articles in this book, which are organized in four parts: (1) mathematical programming and decision models; (2) economic development and firm growth; (3) manpower planning and design; and (4) accounting and control. At the core of all of the articles in this book lies a belief that analytical approaches can help solve all managerial problems, a philosophy that is deeply rooted in Professor Cooper's thinking. This book demonstrates how this fundamental view on management can be reflected in dealing with problems in various fields of management. In particular, the book focuses on three main areas of application of this view, economic development, manpower planning, and accounting and control, along with the subject of developing tools that are necessary for solving managerial problems analytically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are multi-national corporations like Walmart and Amazon laying the groundwork for international socialism? For the left and the right, major multinational companies are held up as the ultimate expressions of free-market capitalism. Their remarkable success appears to vindicate the old idea that modern society is too complex to be subjected to a plan. And yet, as Leigh Phillips and Michal Rozworski argue, much of the economy of the West is centrally planned at present. Not only is planning on vast scales possible, we already have it and it works. The real question is whether planning can be democratic. Can it be transformed to work for us? An engaging, polemical romp through economic theory, computational complexity, and the history of planning, The People’s Republic of Walmart revives the conversation about how society can extend democratic decision-making to all economic matters. With the advances in information technology in recent decades and the emergence of globe-straddling collective enterprises, democratic planning in the interest of all humanity is more important and closer to attainment than ever before.
