This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II was a transitional period in German history when the traditions of the nineteenth century were coming into conflict with the emerging cultural, social, and political patterns of the twentieth century. The resulting tensions were clearly reflected in the period's leading satirical journals, Kladderadatsch and Simplicissimus. Both journals appealed to a diverse middle-class readership and attracted widespread attention through their flamboyant and sometimes scurrilous attacks on authority. Their satire, expressed through cartoons, anecdotes, verse, and fiction, ranged across nearly every aspect of German life and employed the talents of some of the period's most important writers and artists. That their purpose was essentially serious was shown by the frequent seizures of offending issues and the jail sentences meted out to satirists whose jabs struck too near home. Kladderadatsch, founded in Berlin in 1848, was liberal politically but generally mild in its social satire. It remained for Simplicissimus, founded in Munich in 1896, to launch a more radical critique of bourgeois culture. The primary target of both journals was the absurdities of an essentially weak monarchy personified in a Kaiser who seemed always to be "on stage." Simplicissimus, in addition, delighted in ridiculing a military establishment dominated by class, a repressive educational system, and a hypocritical religious hierarchy. Even the family came in for satirical treatment. Through the history of these two periodicals, Ann Taylor Allen demonstrates the uses of humor in a society that offered few effective outlets for dissent. She also provides important new insights into the role of popular journalism in this critical period.
Book Synopsis Karl Kraus and the Critics by : Harry Zohn
Download or read book Karl Kraus and the Critics written by Harry Zohn and published by Camden House. This book was released on 1997 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Kraus and the Critics, the first study devoted entirely to a century of critical reactions to this controversial satirist, who was both deified and vilified in his lifetime and in the six decades since his death, attempts to reduce an enormous amount of criticism to manageable dimensions and to give a typology of this commentary. By means of copious quotation from both major and minor studies as well as reliable translation it provides some access to criticism that has been published only in German. A chronology of Kraus's life and works and an extensive bibliography of both primary and secondary writings are intended to enhance the reference value of this book and to stimulate further reading and research.

Book excerpt: "Moral" is a humor German drama. Dr. Ludwig Thoma, perhaps better known to his Bavarian countrymen as Peter Schlemiehl, was born in Oberammergau on January 21, 1867. He had been writing humorous verses for Simplicissimus for several years. First produced in 1908 the play soon became a part and parcel of the repertoire of the leading theatres in Germany. He pointed out "that no country where hypocrisy or puritanism prevail as factors in the social and municipal conduct should be spared the corrective acid of this play."
