Book excerpt: Bestselling author John Green provides a foreword to this deluxe edition of the beloved classic With a gorgeous new package and a foreword from bestselling author John Green, the deluxe edition of The Golden Rule spreads the message of kindness to a new generation. But, what does it really mean? And how do you follow it? A grandfather explains to his grandson that the Golden Rule means you “treat people the way you would like to be treated. It’s golden because it’s so valuable, and a way of living your life that’s so simple, it shines.” The book reveals versions of the Golden Rule found in many cultures and religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam. Following the Golden Rule is something everyone can do, which means that every person—old or young, rich or poor—can help make the world a better place.

Book excerpt: It is commonly accepted that the golden rule--most often formulated as "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"--is a unifying element between many diverse religious traditions, both Eastern and Western. Its influence also extends beyond such traditions, since many non-religious individuals hold up the golden rule as central to their lives. Yet, while it is extraordinarily important and widespread, the golden rule is often dismissed by scholars as a vague proverb that quickly leads to absurdities when one attempts to formulate it in clear terms. In this book, Harry J. Gensler defends the golden rule and addresses all of the major philosophic objections, pointing out several common misunderstanding and misapplications. Gensler first discusses golden-rule reasoning and how to avoid the main pitfalls. He then relates the golden rule to world religions and history, and to areas like moral education, egoism, evolution, society, racism, business, and medicine. The book ends with a discussion of theoretical issues (like whether all morality reduces to the golden rule, which the author argues against). Ethics and the Golden Rule offers two introductory chapters, the first is simpler and the second more technical; a reader may start with either or both. One can then read any combination of further chapters, in any order, depending on one's interests; but Chapters 13 and 14 are technical and assume one has read Chapter 2. This is "a golden-rule book for everyone," accessible to a wide readership.

Book excerpt: America's premier biographer for young people illuminates the remarkable life and far-reaching influence of the famous Chinese philosopher. Born in China in 551 B. C., Confucius rose from poverty to the heights of his country's ruling class. But then he quit his high post for the life of an itinerant philosopher. "The Analects" collects his teachings on education and government, the definition of nobility, the equality of man and the right way and purpose of living, ideas that eventually spread to the West and influenced the great thinkers of the Enlightenment. And five centuries before Christ, Confucius set forth his own Golden Rule: "Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To discover who rules, follow the gold." This is the argument of Golden Rule, a provocative, pungent history of modern American politics. Although the role big money plays in defining political outcomes has long been obvious to ordinary Americans, most pundits and scholars have virtually dismissed this assumption. Even in light of skyrocketing campaign costs, the belief that major financial interests primarily determine who parties nominate and where they stand on the issues—that, in effect, Democrats and Republicans are merely the left and right wings of the "Property Party"—has been ignored by most political scientists. Offering evidence ranging from the nineteenth century to the 1994 mid-term elections, Golden Rule shows that voters are "right on the money." Thomas Ferguson breaks completely with traditional voter centered accounts of party politics. In its place he outlines an "investment approach," in which powerful investors, not unorganized voters, dominate campaigns and elections. Because businesses "invest" in political parties and their candidates, changes in industrial structures—between large firms and sectors—can alter the agenda of party politics and the shape of public policy. Golden Rule presents revised versions of widely read essays in which Ferguson advanced and tested his theory, including his seminal study of the role played by capital intensive multinationals and international financiers in the New Deal. The chapter "Studies in Money Driven Politics" brings this aspect of American politics into better focus, along with other studies of Federal Reserve policy making and campaign finance in the 1936 election. Ferguson analyzes how a changing world economy and other social developments broke up the New Deal system in our own time, through careful studies of the 1988 and 1992 elections. The essay on 1992 contains an extended analysis of the emergence of the Clinton coalition and Ross Perot's dramatic independent insurgency. A postscript on the 1994 elections demonstrates the controlling impact of money on several key campaigns. This controversial work by a theorist of money and politics in the U.S. relates to issues in campaign finance reform, PACs, policymaking, public financing, and how today's elections work.

Book excerpt: This message has changed millions of lives! It will change your life. This small book does not get involved with wrangling about doctrines, whether religious or political. It wastes no pages railing against the present-day habits or addictions to alcohol, drugs or sex. Its purpose is not to prove wrong the present-day attitudes and lifestyles.Rather, it is based on the singular teaching of Jesus whose message could be described by the maxim of Buckminster Fuller, "YOU NEVER CHANGE THINGS BY FIGHTING REALITY. TO CHANGE SOMETHING, BUILD A BETTER MODEL THAT MAKES THE OLD MODEL OBSOLETE."Jesus warned of various sins, but He has focused on God's will, God's Rule, God's Kingdom, with its new model as a better way to live and to enjoy God's blessing. It is an inspiring model which shrinks the attraction of the present models and finally eradicates them. As a person instinctively makes comparisons, he or she finds that the old models fade and disappear as the new model develops with its exciting "Why" to live for! with true peace of mind and full joy in life. This book is about Jesus' model! The best way for you to live!

Book excerpt: Many parents and grandparents are seeking guidance and ideas on how to help their children understand and incorporate the Golden Rule into their daily lives. It's about our treatment in words and deeds of our family members, friends, neighbors-and strangers, regardless of their age or sex, position in life, color or creed. This age-old saying still is very relevant today: Do unto others... . The Golden Rule in the Bible teaches us the importance of treating others as we want to be treated. This rule helps children become more aware of others' feelings and, consequently, to do their best to not hurt them. Rewards gained from applying the Golden Rule are so great that we become magnets that attract goodwill and friendship from others. The Golden Rule is a great starting point; however, later as these children grow, they may find that it wiser to incorporate some aspects of the Platinum Rule. This will be one of the many decisions that will confront them-and they might need your guidance and insights.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Rule: Inaugural Lecture Delivered Before the University of Pennsylvania November Eighteenth, 1900 Gratefully appreciating the peculiar honor done me by the Provost and Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania in inviting me to deliver the introductory address in the Lectureship in Christian Ethics, it is appropriate that in this inaugural address I should outline the purpose, the range, and the spirit of the Lectureship, and the qualification for the Lecturer. I. Purpose of the Lectureship. - And, first, the Purpose of the Lectureship. This purpose is not to trace the history of the various ethical theories; this is already admirably done in our own noble University. Nor is it the purpose to teach theology, whether natural, Biblical, or ecclesiastical. But the purpose of this Lectureship is to teach Christian Ethics; that is to say, the practical application of the precepts and behaviour of Jesus Christ to everyday life. And this is the greatest of the sciences. It is a great thing to known astronomy; for it is science of mighty orbs, stupendous distances, majestic adjustments in time and space. It is a great thing to know biology; for it is the science of living organisms - of stating, growth, health, movements, life itself. It is a great thing to know law; for it is the science of legislation, government, equity, civilization. It is a great thing to know philosophy; for it is the science of men and things.
