This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a selection of theoretical reflections, empirical researches and professional experiences to showcase the increasing production of psychological studies in rural contexts developed in Latin America in recent years. Psychology’s tradition of science and eminently urban profession has produced a void of reflections and approaches on important actors of the societies that constitute their existence in rural contexts and in relation – whether of integration, conflicts and contradictions – with urban agents. But a new generation of psychologists are turning their attention to rural contexts, especially in Latin America. This volume aims to present a selection of these psychological studies and interventions developed in rural contexts from a psychosocial and interdisciplinary perspective, developed together with various social actors who live and work in rural spaces, that have an important relationship with land and nature both in terms of the elaboration of their history, the production of their subjectivities and identity ties with the territory, and the engagement in struggles for the right to land and for public policies that guarantee access to education and health services, technical assistance and infrastructure for its working activities. The book is divided in five parts, each one dedicated to a dimension of psychosocial studies and interventions in rural contexts: theoretical approaches; mental health and rural populations; social movements, communities and resistance practices; gender relations and subjectivation processes; and environment and sustainability. Chapters in each axis prioritize reports of experiences and research conducted with participatory approaches, producing new perspectives and reflections that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of psychology, both regionally and globally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death itself is already a major taboo in the Western world. The same can be said about grief, particulalry when it is not seen as such - the so-called symbolic and/or ambiguous losses. With this reality in mind, Gabriela Casellato has gathered fundamental texts to better understand the subject. Divided into four parts - "GRIEF IN EARLY-LIFE LOSSES ", "GRIEF IN LOSSES BY NON-NORMATIVE LIFEE-COUSE TRANSITIONS", "Grief in Care Giving" and "Social Engagement: From Silence to Action" – this book also includes an afterword on the Covid-19 pandemic, which has swept the world and continues to devastate Brazil. Topics covered include: -Fraternal mourning, widowhood, and falling ill with cancer; -Grief faced by those outside of heteronormativity; -Mourning of women who fail to get pregnant; -Subjective and objective losses of immigrants; -Emotional difficulties of formal and informal caregivers and palliative care teams; -Grief of patients who lose their therapist; - Silenced grief of people in religious roles. "This new book edited by Gabriela Casellato is a great contribution to the subject of disenfranchised grief. This volume features chapters by psychologists specialized in the subject, as well as texts written by people who have lived through these losses. Casellato not only expands the dimensions of symbolic/ambiguous loss, but also applies the concept to the specifics of Brazilian culture, integrating theory and intervention. Mandatory work for psychologists, educators and all those who deal with losses without the support and validation they need." KENNETH J. DOKA PHD, author of Disenfranchised grief: new connections, challenges, and strategies for practice. "In her book, Disenfranchised Grief in Contemporary Society, Gabriela Casellato assembles a capable cast of contributors who ask the hard questions and offer authoritative answers regarding the marginalized, stigmatized or simply invisible losses that abound in human life, and that call for greater communal and societal recognition and support. More than simply sounding a call to consciousness, it stretches the boundaries of our understanding of disqualified, disenfranchised loss, whether it arises in connection with the death of a person, place, project or possibility that had once been life-defining. I recommend it to every professional seeking greater clarity, competence and compassion regarding the silent suffering of many of those they serve, and to every one of us who carry the private weight of our own hidden losses." ROBERT A. NEIMEYER, PhD, editor of New Techniques of Grief Therapy: Bereavement and Beyond, and Director, Portland Institute for Loss and Transition

Book excerpt: This book goes beyond the traditional approaches to drug use and discusses the issue from a societal perspective, integrating contributions from different disciplines such as psychology, public health, anthropology, law, public policies and sociology to address specifically the social aspects of the phenomenon. Given its complexity, drug use demands a multidisciplinary approach from many different perspectives, but despite the vast literature about the topic, the majority of the books are restricted either to a purely medical perspective (focused mainly on treatment techniques) or to a criminological perspective (focused mainly on drug trafficking and organized crime). The social approach adopted in this volume challenges this dichotomy and analyzes both the social contexts to which drug use is related and the social and political consequences of the attitudes and policies adopted by governments and other social groups towards drug users, addressing topics such as: Drugs and poverty Drugs and gender Drugs and race Drugs and territory Stigmatization of drug use Prohibitionism Given its broad and innovative approach, Drugs and Social Context - Social Perspectives on the Use of Alcohol and Other Drugs will be of interest for researchers, clinicians and other health professionals, since the study of the social aspects of drug use is central to everyone who deals with the issue.

Both are strongly affected by social and economic determinants such as poverty, migration, unemployment, access to healthcare, and urbanization and, as a result, providing optimal care in the community requires understanding of the cultural context. Part of the Oxford Cultural Psychiatry series, this unique resource provides an overview of the connection between homelessness and mental health around the globe. Over 27 chapters it offers up-to-date research and policy evidence with an emphasis on developing models of social care and rehabilitation at a local level that enable easy access to mental health services. Written and edited by experts drawn from different cultural and geographical perspectives, this unique resource covers key topics such as COVID-19, dental issues, and chronic pain, the experiences of specific vulnerable groups, as well as case studies from specific countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents data and discusses the results of research conducted on crack cocaine consumption and other drug use in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, specifically in the area commonly referred to as "Cracolândia" ("Crackland"). This context is marked by high social vulnerability, rife with numerous inequalities, violence, and human rights violations. The work describes the living conditions of individuals in this setting, narrating their social trajectories, urban itineraries, motivations for substance use, perspectives, and life projects. The book provokes a crucial debate concerning the iatrogenic effects resulting from prohibitionist-repressive "war on drugs" policies. It highlights potential alternative paths for formulating and implementing public policies and psychosocial interventions. 'Amidst the Flow' serves as a valuable resource for researchers and professionals in the fields of addiction studies, healthcare, sociology, law, and drug policy-making. It presents a compelling call for a paradigm shift in drug policies.
