Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative look at previously neglected poetry in British America represents a major contribution to our understanding of early American culture. Spanning the period from the Glorious Revolution (1690) to the end of King George's War (1750), this study critically reconstitutes the literature of empire in the thirteen colonies, Canada, and the West Indies by investigating over 300 texts in mixed print and manuscript sources, including poems in pamphlets and newspapers. British America's poetry of empire was dominated by three issues: mercantilism's promise that civilization and wealth would be transmitted from London to the provinces; the debate over the extent of metropolitan prerogatives in law and commerce when they obtruded upon provincial rights and interests; and the argument that Britain's imperium pelagi was an ethical empire, because it depended upon the morality of trade, while the empires of Spain and France were immoral empires because they were grounded upon conquest. In discussing these issues, Shields provides a virtual anthology of poems long lost to students of American literature.

Book excerpt: This book surveys the uses and function of prophecy, prophets, and oracles among Jews, Christians, and pagans in the first three centuries of the Roman Empire and explores how prophecy and prophetic texts functioned as a common language that enabled religious discourse to develop between these groups. It shows that each of these cultures believed that it was in prophetic texts and prophetic utterances that they could find the surest proof of their religious beliefs and a strong confirmation of their group identity.

Book excerpt: The Sybylline Oracles that provide narratives of Roman history are our best sources for popular understanding of contemporary events, since they were written by those with no obvious connection with the government. The Thirteenth Oracle is particularly interesting as it remains the only first-hand narrative of the critical years of the mid-third century AD, when the empire stood on the brink of political collapse. This book contains the first new edition of the text of the Thirteenth Oracle since 1902, an extensive historical introduction, and a detailed commentary that discusses disputed points of chronology, and how the authors, living in Roman Syria, viewed both the great rival powers of Roman and Persia, and the war that ensued. This work should be of particular value to scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and historians interested in the history of the late Roman empire.

Book excerpt: Late in the summer of 1877, as the tsar’s royal cavalry descends on the defenseless Ottoman outpost of Constanta, and a flock of purple and white hoopoes suddenly appears over the town, Eleonora Cohen is brought into the world by a mysterious pair of Tartar midwives who arrive only minutes before the birth. Eleonora, whose mother dies during labour, is raised by her father, Yakob, a carpet merchant, and her stern and resentful stepmother. From the moment Eleonora learns to read, her father recognizes that she is an extraordinarily gifted child, a prodigy. When Yakob sets off by boat for Stamboul on business, his eight-year-old daughter, unable to bear the separation, stows away in one of his trunks crammed with carpets. On the shores of the Bosporus, in the house of her father’s business partner, Moncef Bey, a new life awaits Eleonora. Books, backgammon, sumptuous new dresses, markets, cafés and some mysterious events she cannot yet decipher. For in Stamboul in 1886, people are not always what they seem. Marvellously evocative and magical, Michael David Lukas’s bestselling historical novel will transport readers to another time and place—romantic, exotic, yet perhaps not so different from our own.

Book excerpt: New York Times and USA Today Best Seller! Discover the amazing secret of the ages...and the mystery of your life! The Oracle will reveal the mystery behind everything...the past, the present, current events, even what is yet to come! Open the seven doors of revelation—and prepare to be blown away! Jonathan Cahn, author of the New York Times best sellers The Harbinger, The Mystery of the Shemitah, The Book of Mysteries, and The Paradigm, now unveils The Oracle, in which he opens up the Jubilean mysteries and a revelation so big that it lies behind everything from the rise and fall of nations and empires (even America), to the current events of our day, to the future, to end-time prophecy, and much more. Could an ancient prophecy and a mysterious ordinance given in a Middle Eastern desert over three thousand years ago be determining the events of our day? Could some of the most famous people of modern history and current events be secretly linked to this mystery-even a modern president of the United States? Could this ancient revelation pinpoint the events of our times down to the year, month, and day of their occurring? Could a mysterious phenomenon be manifesting on the world stage on an exact timetable determined from ancient times? Could these manifestations have altered-and now be altering-the course of world events? Jonathan Cahn takes the reader on a journey to find the man called the Oracle. One by one each of the Jubilean mysteries will be revealed through the giving of a vision. The Oracle will uncover the mysteries of The Stranger, The Lost City, The Man With the Measuring Line, The Land of Seven Wells, The Birds, The Number of the End, The Man in the Black Robe, The Prophet's Song, The Matrix of Years, The Day of the Lions, The Awakening of the Dragon, and much more. The reader will discover the ancient scrolls that contain the appointed words that have determined the course of world history from the onset of modern times up to our day. The revelation is so big that it will involve and open up the mysteries of everything and everyone from Mark Twain to Moses, from King Nebuchadnezzar to Donald Trump, from the fall of empires to the rise of America, from a mystery hidden in a desert cave to another in an ancient scroll, from the palace of the Persian Empire to the US Senate, from the Summer of Love to the Code of Babylon, and much, much more. Ultimately the Oracle will reveal the secret that lies behind end-time prophecy and the mystery of the end of the age. As with The Harbinger and The Book of Mysteries, Cahn reveals the mysteries through a narrative. A traveler is given seven keys; each will open up one of seven doors. Behind each door lies a stream of mysteries. The reader will be taken on a journey of angels and prophetic revelations waiting to be discovered behind each of the seven doors-the ancient secrets that lie behind the world-changing events of modern times-and revelations of what is yet to come. Hailed as a mind-blowing masterpiece, The Oracle will reveal mysteries that are absolutely real, amazing, stunning, mind-blowing, and life-changing. Prepare to be blown away. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Susan Imbarrato tells the story of the Cary family of Chelsea, Massachusetts, who prospered as plantation owners and managers for nearly two decades in the West Indies before their fortunes were substantially reversed following the slave revolts of 1795-1796 that upended the sugar trade and marked a significant turning point in the family's financial and social well-being. Working closely with archival materials that include letters, diaries, newspapers, a plantation manual, and business memoranda, the author places the Cary family story within the larger context of the transition from colonial America to the new republic and against the backdrop of the transatlantic sugar trade, the slave revolts, and the early abolitionist movement. With Sarah Gray Cary's quick intelligence and astute assessments as their guide, the Cary family adapts to their shifting fortunes in remarkable ways. This study offers a new perspective on this time period using the extensive mother-son correspondence as they address family matters, share opinions on political and social events, discuss literature and philosophy, and speculate on business and career possibilities. Throughout, Sarah provides a steadying influence that both sustains and encourages, all the while successfully managing households in both Grenada and Chelsea that will eventually include thirteen children. The methodology of this study combines New Historicism with close readings. A must-read for historians, literary scholars, students, and the general public interested in American history and literature, women's history, the transatlantic sugar trade, slavery, abolition, letter writing, family correspondence, the Revolutionary Era, and the new republic" --

Book excerpt: Addressing the role which divination played in ancient Greek society, this volume deals with various forms of prophecy and how each was utilised and for what purpose. Chapters bring together key types of divining, such as from birds, celestial phenomena, the entrails of sacrificed animals and dreams. Oracular centres delivered prophetic pronouncements to enquirers, but in addition, there were written collections of oracles in circulation. Many books were available on how to interpret dreams, the birds and entrails, and divination as a religious phenomenon attracted the attention of many writers. Expert diviners were at the heart of Greek prophecy, whether these were Apollo’s priestesses delivering prose or verse answers to questions put to them by consultants, diviners known as manteis, who interpreted entrails and omens, the chresmologoi, who sang the many oracles circulating orally or in writing, or dream interpreters. Divination was utilised not only to foretell the future but also to ensure that the individual or state employing divination acted in accordance with that divinely prescribed future; it was employed by all and had a crucial role to play in what courses of action both states and individuals undertook. Specific attention is paid in this volume not only to the ancient written evidence, but to that of inscriptions and papyri, with emphasis placed on the iconography of Greek divination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Devil's Tabernacle is the first book to examine in depth the intellectual and cultural impact of the oracles of pagan antiquity on modern European thought. Anthony Ossa-Richardson shows how the study of the oracles influenced, and was influenced by, some of the most significant developments in early modernity, such as the Christian humanist recovery of ancient religion, confessional polemics, Deist and libertine challenges to religion, antiquarianism and early archaeology, Romantic historiography, and spiritualism. Ossa-Richardson examines the different views of the oracles since the Renaissance--that they were the work of the devil, or natural causes, or the fraud of priests, or finally an organic element of ancient Greek society. The range of discussion on the subject, as he demonstrates, is considerably more complex than has been realized before: hundreds of scholars, theologians, and critics commented on the oracles, drawing on a huge variety of intellectual contexts to frame their beliefs. In a central chapter, Ossa-Richardson interrogates the landmark dispute on the oracles between Bernard de Fontenelle and Jean-François Baltus, challenging Whiggish assumptions about the mechanics of debate on the cusp of the Enlightenment. With erudition and an eye for detail, he argues that, on both sides of the controversy, to speak of the ancient oracles in early modernity was to speak of one's own historical identity as a Christian.
