Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Conformal Representation of Plane Curves Particularly for the Cases P = 4, 5, and 6 In order to do this we must classify surfaces according to their deficiencies and treat each class separately. In the case p=0 there are no cuts on the surface and no integrals of the first kind. Integrals of the second kind exist on all surfaces. Let us select one of these, w, which has a single algebraic infinity. The function w being of weight one assumes one and only one value corresponding to each point of the n-leaved surface F (x,y) = 0. These values, real and complex, may be represented by the points in a plane by the ordinary representation of complex numbers. The given n-leaved surface can then be conformally represented upon a plane by means of the real and complex values assumed by w. If p = 1 two cuts are required to make the surface simply connected. We know that on any surface of deficiency p, there exist p linearly independent integrals of the first kind. Here then there exists only one which we will call u. Let the periods across the cuts be w1 and w2 If u has the value uo at a given point, for all the region around containing no branch point the u will vary continuously, and since u can be nowhere infinite, and since its values may be represented by points of a plane just as any complex number is represented, these points must all be within a parallelogram whose boundaries are determined by the limits of the values of the real and imaginary parts of u as it varies over the surface, never crossing a boundary. If we seek then to represent our entire surface by means of the integral u which has an infinite number of values we get corresponding to a given point of Fn an infinite number of homologous points in similar parallelograms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Higher Plane Curves: Intended as a Sequel to a Treatise on Conic Sections Considered as a book for advanced readers, I regret that I have not had leisure for the reading necessary to make this work as complete as it ought to be. My know ledge of the older writers on Geometry is, for the most part, either second-hand or superficial and I cannot even claim acquaintance with all of the most remarkable works and memoirs which of late years have been published on the subject. But even such an imperfect compilation as I have been able to make will, I hope, not be useless. In every branch of Mathematics it is desirable that elemen tary treatises should keep pace with the progress of science. A new province can scarcely be considered as gained to analysis until roads have been made through the conquered territory. It is desirable that each new student who Wishes to devote himself to original investi gation in any branch of Mathematics should have his energies as quickly as possible brought to bear upon the undiscovered parts of the science and that his abilities should not be wasted in rediscovering truths known al ready, nor his time frittered away in hunting for them without 'a guide through the wilderness of scientific periodicals. Book excerpt: "This book is the result of a study in which the authors identified all of the American women who earned PhD's in mathematics before 1940, and collected extensive biographical and bibliographical information about each of them. By reconstructing as complete a picture as possible of this group of women, Green and LaDuke reveal insights into the larger scientific and cultural communities in which they lived and worked." "The book contains an extended introductory essay, as well as biographical entries for each of the 228 women in the study. The authors examine family backgrounds, education, careers, and other professional activities. They show that there were many more women earning PhD's in mathematics before 1940 than is commonly thought." "The material will be of interest to researchers, teachers, and students in mathematics, history of mathematics, history of science, women's studies, and sociology."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Higher Plane Curves: Intended as a Sequel to a Treatise on Conic Sections The first edition of this treatise has been for several years out of print, and I had for sometime given up the idea of reprinting it. The work, having been written at a time when the Modern Higher Algebra was still in its infancy, required extensive alterations in order to bring it up to the present state of the science; and, as I had failed to bring out a new edition before my appointment to the office which I now hold, I judged it impossible to do so, now that other engagements left me no leisure to make acquaintance with recent mathematical discoveries, or even to keep up my memory of what I had previously known. He connected whole mathematical subjects in entirely new ways and changed the way mathematicians think about geometry, topology, foliations, group theory, dynamical systems, and the way these areas interact. His emphasis on understanding and imagination in mathematical learning and thinking are integral elements of his distinctive legacy. This four-part collection brings together in one place Thurston's major writings, many of which are appearing in publication for the first time. Volumes I–III contain commentaries by the Editors. Volume IV includes a preface by Steven P. Kerckhoff. Volume IV contains Thurston's highly influential, though previously unpublished, 1977–78 Princeton Course Notes on the Geometry and Topology of 3-manifolds. It is an indispensable part of the Thurston collection but can also be used on its own as a textbook or for self-study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general theory of orthogonal polynomials was developed in the late 19th century from a study of continued fractions by P. L. Chebyshev, even though special cases were introduced earlier by Legendre, Hermite, Jacobi, Laguerre, and Chebyshev himself. It was further developed by A. A. Markov, T. J. Stieltjes, and many other mathematicians. The book by Szego, originally published in 1939, is the first monograph devoted to the theory of orthogonal polynomials and its applications in many areas, including analysis, differential equations, probability and mathematical physics. Even after all the years that have passed since the book first appeared, and with many other books on the subject published since then, this classic monograph by Szego remains an indispensable resource both as a textbook and as a reference book. It can be recommended to anyone who wants to be acquainted with this central topic of mathematical analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an accessible introduction to the applications of pseudoholomorphic curves in symplectic and contact geometry, with emphasis on dimensions four and three. The first half of the book focuses on McDuff's characterization of symplectic rational and ruled surfaces, one of the classic early applications of holomorphic curve theory. The proof presented here uses the language of Lefschetz fibrations and pencils, thus it includes some background on these topics, in addition to a survey of the required analytical results on holomorphic curves. Emphasizing applications rather than technical results, the analytical survey mostly refers to other sources for proofs, while aiming to provide precise statements that are widely applicable, plus some informal discussion of the analytical ideas behind them. The second half of the book then extends this program in two complementary directions: (1) a gentle introduction to Gromov-Witten theory and complete proof of the classification of uniruled symplectic 4-manifolds; and (2) a survey of punctured holomorphic curves and their applications to questions from 3-dimensional contact topology, such as classifying the symplectic fillings of planar contact manifolds. This book will be particularly useful to graduate students and researchers who have basic literacy in symplectic geometry and algebraic topology, and would like to learn how to apply standard techniques from holomorphic curve theory without dwelling more than necessary on the analytical details. This book is also part of the Virtual Series on Symplectic Geometry http://www.springer.com/series/16019
