Book Synopsis Invariant Forms on Grassmann Manifolds. (AM-89), Volume 89 by : Wilhelm Stoll
Download or read book Invariant Forms on Grassmann Manifolds. (AM-89), Volume 89 written by Wilhelm Stoll and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers a contribution in the geometric form of the theory of several complex variables. Since complex Grassmann manifolds serve as classifying spaces of complex vector bundles, the cohomology structure of a complex Grassmann manifold is of importance for the construction of Chern classes of complex vector bundles. The cohomology ring of a Grassmannian is therefore of interest in topology, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and complex analysis. Wilhelm Stoll treats certain aspects of the complex analysis point of view. This work originated with questions in value distribution theory. Here analytic sets and differential forms rather than the corresponding homology and cohomology classes are considered. On the Grassmann manifold, the cohomology ring is isomorphic to the ring of differential forms invariant under the unitary group, and each cohomology class is determined by a family of analytic sets.

Besides a selection of the mathematical papers the book also contains all his papers published after 1988.
Book Synopsis Characteristic Classes by : John Willard Milnor
Download or read book Characteristic Classes written by John Willard Milnor and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1974 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of characteristic classes provides a meeting ground for the various disciplines of differential topology, differential and algebraic geometry, cohomology, and fiber bundle theory. As such, it is a fundamental and an essential tool in the study of differentiable manifolds. In this volume, the authors provide a thorough introduction to characteristic classes, with detailed studies of Stiefel-Whitney classes, Chern classes, Pontrjagin classes, and the Euler class. Three appendices cover the basics of cohomology theory and the differential forms approach to characteristic classes, and provide an account of Bernoulli numbers. Based on lecture notes of John Milnor, which first appeared at Princeton University in 1957 and have been widely studied by graduate students of topology ever since, this published version has been completely revised and corrected.

Download or read book Selected Papers written by Shiing-Shen Chern and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1978 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recognition of professor Shiing-Shen Chern’s long and distinguished service to mathematics and to the University of California, the geometers at Berkeley held an International Symposium in Global Analysis and Global Geometry in his honor in June 1979. The output of this Symposium was published in a series of three separate volumes, comprising approximately a third of Professor Chern’s total publications up to 1979. Later, a fourth volume was published, focusing on papers written during the Eighties. This second volume comprises selected papers written between 1932 and 1965.

Book Synopsis Basic Algebraic Topology by : Anant R. Shastri
Download or read book Basic Algebraic Topology written by Anant R. Shastri and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on rudimentary knowledge of real analysis, point-set topology, and basic algebra, Basic Algebraic Topology provides plenty of material for a two-semester course in algebraic topology. The book first introduces the necessary fundamental concepts, such as relative homotopy, fibrations and cofibrations, category theory, cell complexes, and simplicial complexes. It then focuses on the fundamental group, covering spaces and elementary aspects of homology theory. It presents the central objects of study in topology visualization: manifolds. After developing the homology theory with coefficients, homology of the products, and cohomology algebra, the book returns to the study of manifolds, discussing Poincaré duality and the De Rham theorem. A brief introduction to cohomology of sheaves and Čech cohomology follows. The core of the text covers higher homotopy groups, Hurewicz’s isomorphism theorem, obstruction theory, Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces, and Moore-Postnikov decomposition. The author then relates the homology of the total space of a fibration to that of the base and the fiber, with applications to characteristic classes and vector bundles. The book concludes with the basic theory of spectral sequences and several applications, including Serre’s seminal work on higher homotopy groups. Thoroughly classroom-tested, this self-contained text takes students all the way to becoming algebraic topologists. Historical remarks throughout the text make the subject more meaningful to students. Also suitable for researchers, the book provides references for further reading, presents full proofs of all results, and includes numerous exercises of varying levels.
