Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the state of the art of reduced order methods for modelling and computational reduction of complex parametrised systems, governed by ordinary and/or partial differential equations, with a special emphasis on real time computing techniques and applications in various fields. Consisting of four contributions presented at the CIME summer school, the book presents several points of view and techniques to solve demanding problems of increasing complexity. The focus is on theoretical investigation and applicative algorithm development for reduction in the complexity – the dimension, the degrees of freedom, the data – arising in these models. The book is addressed to graduate students, young researchers and people interested in the field. It is a good companion for graduate/doctoral classes.

It presents an overview of recent advances in numerical geometry, grid generation and adaptation in terms of mathematical foundations, algorithm and software development and applications. The specific topics covered include: quasi-conformal and quasi-isometric mappings, hyperelastic deformations, multidimensional generalisations of the equidistribution principle, discrete differential geometry, spatial and metric encodings, Voronoi-Delaunay theory for tilings and partitions, duality in mathematical programming and numerical geometry, mesh-based optimisation and optimal control methods. Further aspects examined include iterative solvers for variational problems and algorithm and software development. The applications of the methods discussed are multidisciplinary and include problems from mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, material science, and engineering.

Book excerpt: The Distributed and Unified Numerics Environment (Dune) is a set of open-source C++ libraries for the implementation of finite element and finite volume methods. Over the last 15 years it has become one of the most commonly used libraries for the implementation of new, efficient simulation methods in science and engineering. Describing the main Dune libraries in detail, this book covers access to core features like grids, shape functions, and linear algebra, but also higher-level topics like function space bases and assemblers. It includes extensive information on programmer interfaces, together with a wealth of completed examples that illustrate how these interfaces are used in practice. After having read the book, readers will be prepared to write their own advanced finite element simulators, tapping the power of Dune to do so.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook introduces the study of partial differential equations using both analytical and numerical methods. By intertwining the two complementary approaches, the authors create an ideal foundation for further study. Motivating examples from the physical sciences, engineering, and economics complete this integrated approach. A showcase of models begins the book, demonstrating how PDEs arise in practical problems that involve heat, vibration, fluid flow, and financial markets. Several important characterizing properties are used to classify mathematical similarities, then elementary methods are used to solve examples of hyperbolic, elliptic, and parabolic equations. From here, an accessible introduction to Hilbert spaces and the spectral theorem lay the foundation for advanced methods. Sobolev spaces are presented first in dimension one, before being extended to arbitrary dimension for the study of elliptic equations. An extensive chapter on numerical methods focuses on finite difference and finite element methods. Computer-aided calculation with MapleTM completes the book. Throughout, three fundamental examples are studied with different tools: Poisson’s equation, the heat equation, and the wave equation on Euclidean domains. The Black–Scholes equation from mathematical finance is one of several opportunities for extension. Partial Differential Equations offers an innovative introduction for students new to the area. Analytical and numerical tools combine with modeling to form a versatile toolbox for further study in pure or applied mathematics. Illuminating illustrations and engaging exercises accompany the text throughout. Courses in real analysis and linear algebra at the upper-undergraduate level are assumed.

This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-order numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws do not guarantee the validity of constraints that physically meaningful approximations are supposed to satisfy. The finite volume and finite element schemes summarized in this book use limiting techniques to enforce discrete maximum principles and entropy inequalities. Spurious oscillations are prevented using artificial viscosity operators and/or essentially nonoscillatory reconstructions. An introduction to classical nonlinear stabilization approaches is given in the simple context of one-dimensional finite volume discretizations. Subsequent chapters of Part I are focused on recent extensions to continuous and discontinuous Galerkin methods. Many of the algorithms presented in these chapters were developed by the authors and their collaborators. Part II gives a deeper insight into the mathematical theory of property-preserving numerical schemes. It begins with a review of the convergence theory for finite volume methods and ends with analysis of algebraic flux correction schemes for finite elements. In addition to providing ready-to-use algorithms, this text explains the design principles behind such algorithms and shows how to put theory into practice. Although the book is based on lecture notes written for an advanced graduate-level course, it is also aimed at senior researchers who develop and analyze numerical methods for hyperbolic problems.
