Book Synopsis The Idea of Development Between its Past and its Future by : Ioanna Kuçuradi

This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideas play a more crucial role in history than they appear to do at first sight. If not sufficiently scrutinized, they sometimes lead to results far divergent from the initial intentions of those who put them forth as lines of orientation for practice. This seems to be also the case with the idea of "development", which has marked social and political practice in the second half of the 20 th Century. In this volume philosophers from different parts of the world discuss, and attempt to evaluate, from epistemological and ethical points of view, the idea of "development", as the principal objective of national and international policies during the past few decades.
Book Synopsis Switzerland and Migration by : Barbara Lüthi
Download or read book Switzerland and Migration written by Barbara Lüthi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the history of migration in Switzerland from the late nineteenth century to the present day. It brings together recent scholarship on Switzerland in the field of cultural and migration studies, as well as migration history, and combines various research approaches from postcolonial studies, transnational studies, border studies, and history of knowledge. Since the late nineteenth century, Switzerland has gradually transformed into a migration society, becoming one of the countries in Europe with the highest percentage of migrant population. While migration has become one of most contentious issues in Swiss public and political debates, the volume also shows how migrants have developed various strategies to deal with the country’s discriminatory policies and distinct institutional settings. The authors of the volume convincingly challenge the view that Switzerland still does not represent a migration (or even post-migrant) society and substantially contributes to the long overdue acknowledgement of Switzerland in migration history and studies at the international level.

Book Synopsis National and Religious Ideologies in the Construction of Educational Historiography by : Jil Winandy
Download or read book National and Religious Ideologies in the Construction of Educational Historiography written by Jil Winandy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documenting the reception of the pre-eminent Austrian school reformer Johann Ignaz Felbiger and his pedagogical thought in European histories of education in the nineteenth century, this volume demonstrates how national and religious ideological preferences have propelled the construction of fundamental biases in educational historiography. Covering more than 200 years and multiple national contexts, this book’s case studies of France and Switzerland, as well as close analysis of historical documents and textbooks, reveal how a canon of glorified historical "heroes" have been promoted over and above other educational actors, with the aim of morally instructing future teachers according to national and religious values. Based on a strong array of historical sources, the author demonstrates how biased educational historiographies are utilized in gaining support for certain pedagogical and curricula models. Through the deep examination of textbooks used in teacher training and the explication of the work and actual influence of Felbiger’s method in Catholic parts of Europe, this book captures how these narratives impact our understanding of early national histories. Offering new knowledge in the history of curriculum studies, this volume will be of interest to scholars and researchers with an interest in the history of education, as well as comparative teacher education.
