This book was released on 2001 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6.8 magnitude Nisqually earthquake was an extensional intraplate event deep below the Puget Sound region, in the Cascadia subduction zone. It occurred in the Juan de Fuca oceanic plate, which is subducted beneath the North American plate. The hypocenter lay 30 miles beneath the Nisqually delta area, approximately 11 miles northeast of Olympia, Washington, USA. Loss of life was limited to one person, who suffered a heart attack that was attributed to earthquake trauma. Approximately 400 people were injured sufficiently to seek medical assistance. On the day of the earthquake, a state of emergency was declared. The next day, the Governor requested federal assistance and estimated the economic consequences at $2 billion. This 26-page report presents a preliminary description of the seismological back-ground, the ground motions, the responses of natural and man-made structures-buildings, bridges, and lifelines-to those ground motions, and the societal consequences.

A quake will happen--in fact it's actually overdue. The Cascadia subduction zone is 750 miles long, running along the Pacific coast from Northern California up to southern British Columbia. In this fascinating book, The Seattle Times science reporter Sandi Doughton introduces readers to the scientists who are dedicated to understanding the way the earth moves and describes what patterns can be identified and how prepared (or not) people are. With a 100% chance of a mega-quake hitting the Pacific Northwest, this fascinating book reports on the scientists who are trying to understand when, where, and just how big THE BIG ONE will be. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Post Earthquake Investigation Committee of the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. In the late afternoon of June 23, 2001, a colossal earthquake with a magnitude of 8.4 MW took place in the coastal waters off the District of Arequipa and the town of Atico, Peru. The magnitude of the event made it the largest in the world in the previous 25 years. This earthquake caused nearly 2,000 deaths and 3,000 injuries; 26,000 homes were destroyed; 34,000 homes were damaged; and 190,000 people were left homeless. This report highlights results of a reconnaissance to investigate the damage and impacts to the various lifelines: water, railroads, highway systems, power systems, airports, and communications. The main geotechnical feature of this event was shaking induced landslides, rock falls, and subsidence associated with poorly compacted fills, steep cut slopes, and differential settlement at cut/fill interfaces.

FFE has the potential of causing catastrophic losses in the United States, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and other seismically active countries with wood houses. This comprehensive book on FFE and urban conflagrations provides state-of-the-practice insight on unique issues, such as large diameter flex hose applications by fire and water departments. Topics include: History of past fires; Computer modeling of fire spread in the post-earthquake urban environment; Concurrent damage and fire impacts for water, power gas, communication and transportation systems; Examples of reliable water systems built or designed in San Francisco, Vancouver, Berkeley, and Kyoto; Use of large diameter (5 in.) and ultralarge diameter (12 in.) flex hose for fire fighting and water restoration; and Cost-effectiveness of various FFE mitigation strategies, with a detailed benefit-cost model. Book Synopsis Effects of the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake on Small Businesses in Washington State by : Jacqueline Meszaros
Download or read book Effects of the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake on Small Businesses in Washington State written by Jacqueline Meszaros and published by . This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2001 Nisqually earthquake in Wash. State was a large magnitude (6.8 Mw) quake that yielded mild ground shaking. Yet it was the costliest natural disaster in the state's history. The fact that a relatively mild earthquake can yield such significant losses may be the most important lesson Nisqually has to offer. This report discusses the quake's effect on small bus. Bldg. damage was the most common and most costly form of direct loss. Large losses also resulted from damage to inventory &/or to data and records. Retail bus. were the most likely to suffer both bldg. damage and inventory damage. Following Nisqually, about 1/3 of the bus. owners have taken steps to better prepare for future earthquake, mainly by training, planning and strapping contents.
