Book excerpt: The 6.8 magnitude Nisqually earthquake was an extensional intraplate event deep below the Puget Sound region, in the Cascadia subduction zone. It occurred in the Juan de Fuca oceanic plate, which is subducted beneath the North American plate. The hypocenter lay 30 miles beneath the Nisqually delta area, approximately 11 miles northeast of Olympia, Washington, USA. Loss of life was limited to one person, who suffered a heart attack that was attributed to earthquake trauma. Approximately 400 people were injured sufficiently to seek medical assistance. On the day of the earthquake, a state of emergency was declared. The next day, the Governor requested federal assistance and estimated the economic consequences at $2 billion. This 26-page report presents a preliminary description of the seismological back-ground, the ground motions, the responses of natural and man-made structures-buildings, bridges, and lifelines-to those ground motions, and the societal consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The destructive force of earthquakes has stimulated human inquiry since ancient times, yet the scientific study of earthquakes is a surprisingly recent endeavor. Instrumental recordings of earthquakes were not made until the second half of the 19th century, and the primary mechanism for generating seismic waves was not identified until the beginning of the 20th century. From this recent start, a range of laboratory, field, and theoretical investigations have developed into a vigorous new discipline: the science of earthquakes. As a basic science, it provides a comprehensive understanding of earthquake behavior and related phenomena in the Earth and other terrestrial planets. As an applied science, it provides a knowledge base of great practical value for a global society whose infrastructure is built on the Earth's active crust. This book describes the growth and origins of earthquake science and identifies research and data collection efforts that will strengthen the scientific and social contributions of this exciting new discipline.

Structural integrity does not have to be at the expense of innovative, high standard design in seismically active zones. * By emphasizing design and discussing key concepts with accompanying visual material, architects are given the background knowledge and practical tools needed to deal with aspects of seismic design at all stages of the design process * Seismic codes from several continents are drawn upon to give a global context of seismic design * Extensively illustrated with diagrams and photographs * A non-mathematical approach focuses upon the principles and practice of seismic resistant design to enable readers to grasp the concepts and then readily apply them to their building designs Seismic Design for Architects is a comprehensive, practical reference work and text book for students of architecture, building science, architectural and civil engineering, and professional architects and structural engineers.

Book excerpt: ShakeMap-rapidly, automatically generated shaking and intensity maps-combines instrumental measurements of shaking with information about local geology and earthquake location and magnitude to estimate shaking variations throughout a geographic area. The results are rapidly available via the Web through a variety of map formats, including Geographic Information System (GIS) coverages. These maps have become a valuable tool for emergency response, public information, loss estimation, earthquake planning, and post-earthquake engineering and scientific analyses. With the adoption of ShakeMap as a standard tool for a wide array of users and uses came an impressive demand for up-to-date technical documentation and more general guidelines for users and software developers. This manual is meant to address this need.

This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines disaster risk reduction (DRR) approaches in Bangladesh, drawing examples and lessons from the national and community-level programs, projects, and relevant experiences of the country. The content is based on a selection of available documents, a consultative workshop with academicians from different universities undertaking DRR higher education programs, and the editors’ own knowledge and experience in the field. Special emphasis is given to analyzing field experiences from academic perspectives, and to highlighting key issues and the policy relevance of disaster risk reduction. The book has three parts: Part I provides the outline and basics of DRR, with examples from a global review and from national policies and priorities. Part II covers seven different hazards in Bangladesh, focusing on both shocks and stresses. Part III provides examples of approaches and issues of DRR practices. The primary target groups for this book are students and researchers in the fields of environment, disaster risk reduction, and climate change studies. The book will provide them with a good idea of the current trend of research in the field and will furnish basic knowledge on this important topic in Bangladesh. Another target group comprises practitioners and policy makers, who will be able to apply collective knowledge to policy and decision making.
